Starbucks Odyssey was a U.S.-only beta that added interactive activities and collectible digital “Journey Stamps” to Starbucks Rewards. You did not need to manage cryptocurrency to participate, but the program is no longer active: Starbucks ended the beta on March 31, 2024. A GeekWire reporter’s account of selling one Stamp for $89 offers a glimpse of how its marketplace worked—not evidence of typical returns or what any Stamp is worth today.
What Starbucks Odyssey was
Starbucks introduced Odyssey in 2022 as an extension of Starbucks Rewards. Members used their existing Rewards credentials to access a separate web experience, where they could complete activities related to Starbucks and coffee. The company called its collectible digital assets “Journey Stamps.”
Odyssey was a beta for a limited group of U.S. Rewards members and Starbucks employees selected from a waitlist. The official rules described Journeys as sequences of activities that earned Odyssey Points; activities could include games, educational tasks, and purchase-related tasks. Stamps were the visible collectibles and could carry point values. Starbucks’ official rules also specified that Odyssey Points reset annually beginning January 1, 2024—historical terms, not a current Rewards benefit.
Did members need to buy NFTs or use cryptocurrency?
No cryptocurrency handling was required for the basic experience. Starbucks’ launch-era design aimed to make participation accessible through the web app and familiar Rewards login. Nifty Gateway supported the Stamp marketplace, where participants could buy or sell collectibles; blockchain technology underpinned ownership. That distinction matters: earning a Stamp through a Journey and buying or selling a collectible were different parts of the experience. The fact that a marketplace existed does not mean members had to trade, that every Stamp could be sold at a profit, or that the marketplace is operating for Odyssey assets now.
How the Journeys and Stamps worked
- Sign in: Participants accessed Odyssey using their Starbucks Rewards credentials in a separate mobile-friendly web app, rather than inside the Starbucks Rewards app.
- Complete activities: A Journey grouped activities—such as games or coffee-related learning and purchase tasks—into a sequence that earned Odyssey Points under the program rules.
- Collect a Stamp: Stamps served as digital collectibles associated with Odyssey. Some could be earned by participating; the marketplace also offered a way to buy or sell eligible Stamps.
- Use the Rewards relationship: In his account, GeekWire reporter Kurt Schlosser said purchases registered when he scanned at checkout or paid with the Starbucks app. He described participation in the beta as a mobile web-app experience. His 2022 report notes Starbucks gave him beta access after he requested it for the article.
Early Stamp designs included historical Starbucks imagery and holiday art, according to launch coverage. Starbucks executive vice president and chief marketing officer Brady Brewer described Odyssey at beta launch as the company’s “next big innovation in loyalty to recognize, surprise and delight” members, as Axios reported in December 2022.

What one participant reported earning from a sale
Schlosser wrote that he completed a Journey, received a Holiday Cheer Edition 1 Stamp, No. 4883, and sold it through Nifty Gateway. He reported an $89 sale price and about $79 remaining after fees. These are figures from one transaction in his 2022 account, not a typical resale price, a measure of profitability, or a current valuation.
Odyssey’s collectibles were therefore not equivalent to cash-like loyalty points. A resale depended on a buyer and the marketplace, and the reported sale does not establish how liquid the market was overall. A separate historical example underscores the uncertainty: The Block reported that Starbucks offered its First Store Collection for $100 per token in April 2023 and that the collection did not sell out. That launch price is not evidence of what a token can sell for now.

What happened to Starbucks Odyssey?
Starbucks ended the Odyssey beta on March 31, 2024, according to contemporaneous reporting on the company’s notice. The Block and Restaurant Dive reported the closure and said Stamps would remain accessible on Nifty Gateway after the beta ended.
That announcement is not confirmation of present-day access. The available reporting establishes what Starbucks said at the time, but does not verify whether Nifty Gateway currently supports Odyssey Stamp access or trading, whether particular Stamps can be transferred, or which custody or withdrawal options work today. Treat any claim that an Odyssey Stamp can currently be accessed, sold, or transferred as unverified unless confirmed directly with the relevant service.

What the experiment shows about loyalty collectibles
Odyssey joined everyday loyalty activity to digital collectibles: members could engage with branded activities, earn points, and collect Stamps, while a separate marketplace introduced the possibility of trading. That offered a different kind of reward experience from conventional points, but also added dependence on a third-party marketplace and the continued availability of access and transfer tools.
For a personal-finance reader, the practical distinction is between a reward’s appeal and its dependable value. The reported $89 sale shows that one participant found a buyer in 2022; it does not establish a reliable way to earn money. Odyssey’s history is best understood as a loyalty-program experiment, not an investment opportunity.
