The club announced the transaction on 16 September 2026; subsequent reports by the Associated Press and the Guardian said it was completed, giving Clearlake full control.
Who bought out Boehly and Walter?
Affiliates of Clearlake Capital acquired the Chelsea interests held by Boehly and Walter. Chelsea’s official announcement said the deal would give Clearlake full control, while Hansjörg Wyss would remain an important stakeholder and partner. The Associated Press and the Guardian later reported the sale as completed. (AP; Guardian)
The direction matters: this was a buyout by Clearlake, not an incoming bid by a tycoon to purchase Clearlake’s stake. The August 2026 report that Boehly and Walter were considering selling to Clearlake described an earlier stage; it was superseded by the September announcement. (Guardian)
How ownership changed
Before the transaction, the Associated Press reported Clearlake held 61.5% of Chelsea, while Boehly, Walter and Wyss each held 12.8%. Those are reported pre-deal stakes; Chelsea’s announcement did not publish a revised percentage breakdown. With Boehly’s and Walter’s interests acquired, Clearlake took full control, while Wyss remained involved as a stakeholder and partner.

How much did Clearlake pay?
Chelsea did not disclose the transaction’s financial terms. BBC Sport reported that Clearlake paid close to £1 billion for Boehly’s and Walter’s stakes, and that people close to the transaction put the club’s overall value at around £5 billion. These are press-reported estimates, not figures published by Chelsea. (BBC Sport)
The £6.5 billion figure in the original headline is not supported as the value of this Chelsea transaction. A Los Angeles Times report mentions up to $6.5 billion in assets in connection with Walter’s separate insurance-asset transaction; that is not a Chelsea bid or valuation. (Los Angeles Times)

What changes for Chelsea?
Chelsea said there would be “no changes to the day-to-day operations, leadership or strategy at the Club.” The club also said Clearlake intended to keep investing in infrastructure, sporting performance, player development and long-term success. That is the club’s stated plan, not a guarantee of future results. Boehly left the chairmanship as part of the transition.
Clearlake co-founders Behdad Eghbali and José E. Feliciano said the firm’s focus under full control would be continued investment in the club and “delivering long-term success for Chelsea and the Club’s supporters.” Boehly, in his farewell statement, thanked staff, players, coaches and fans for helping secure the club’s future. Both statements appeared in Chelsea’s announcement.
