The airport, reported to have cost more than €1 billion to build, was bought by Ciudad Real International Airport SL for €56.2 million in September 2018. It has since resumed limited aviation activity, but the current operating rules do not establish scheduled passenger service.
What happened to Ciudad Real airport?
Ciudad Real Central Airport, also known as La Mancha airport, opened in 2008 in central Spain. It was intended in part to absorb excess traffic from Madrid-Barajas, but it sits roughly 150 miles south of Madrid. The airport failed to attract sufficient airline interest and closed in 2012, later entering bankruptcy. The Independent’s 2015 account reports the opening, closure and lack of airline interest.
The airport’s later story is not a simple fire sale followed by permanent abandonment. A €10,000 offer surfaced in the bankruptcy auction in 2015, but the court rejected it as too low. A subsequent €28 million offer also failed. In September 2018, Ciudad Real International Airport SL completed the purchase for €56.2 million, according to Forbes’ 2019 report.
Three figures that should not be confused
| Figure | What it refers to |
|---|---|
| More than €1 billion | A reported construction-cost estimate stated in a 2015 European Parliament written question. It is not an audited, itemized account separating construction, financing and related infrastructure. European Parliament question P-011981/2015 |
| €10,000 | A 2015 bankruptcy-auction bid reported by The Independent. The court rejected it; it was not the completed sale price. The Independent |
| €56.2 million | The reported price of the completed September 2018 sale to Ciudad Real International Airport SL. Forbes |
Calling the airport “sold for €10,000” turns a rejected offer into a completed transaction and obscures the eventual sale. The gap between the reported construction estimate and the sale price is striking, but those figures alone do not explain the airport’s full financial losses or establish an audited total cost.

Why did the airport fail?
The airport was conceived as an alternative outlet for traffic from Madrid-Barajas, yet its location—about 150 miles south of Madrid—made it remote for many passengers and airlines. Forbes identified that distance as a difficulty; contemporaneous reporting also described a failure to attract airline interest. Those facts help explain the problem, but the available accounts do not establish location as the sole cause of the collapse.
After the 2018 purchase, aviation activity returned in limited forms. In 2019, a Boeing 747 landed without passengers, an indication of activity at the site rather than evidence of regular passenger flights.

Is Ciudad Real airport operating now?
Yes, but the current evidence describes limited, request-based aviation operations—not a scheduled passenger airport. The operator, Ciudad Real International Airport (CRIA), announced that activity resumed on 22 January 2026 for general aviation, positioning, maintenance and training flights. CRIA’s airport site provides the operator’s announcement.
ENAIRE’s Spanish Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP), effective 11 June 2026, lists the airport as VFR and distinguishes public-use operations by request from restricted-use operations. Public-use operations require a request at least 72 hours in advance and airport confirmation. Specified restricted activity—including general aviation, flight schools, aerial work and maintenance flights—requires 24 hours’ notice and airport confirmation. The AIP lists no hotel, restaurant or tourist-information service at the airport. Consult the ENAIRE AIP entry for Ciudad Real and check current amendments and NOTAMs before relying on access or operating details.
