Cigar Aficionado reports that Gustave Bock is commonly credited with pioneering cigar bands in the 1830s, though some attribute the practice to Ramon Allones; it says the bands were widespread in Cuba by 1855. The origin attribution is disputed. Cigar Aficionado’s history of cigar bands covers that distinction.
Jewelry borrows the band’s broad visual impression. Trade coverage also uses “cylinder rings” for this style, but the available sources do not establish a single origin date or inventor for the jewelry ring itself. JCK’s coverage of cigar band rings discusses the silhouette and its bridal uses.
What do cigar band rings look like?
The defining impression is a wide band that covers more of the finger than a narrow ring, often with a relatively uninterrupted surface. Designs range from plain gold to textured or stone-set styles. JCK documents plain-gold wedding rings as well as diamond and colored-stone examples; these are illustrations, not a complete classification of the style.

“Wide” is descriptive, not a universal measurement. For example, one EG Jewelry listing specifies a ring that is 12 mm across the top and describes it as low-profile, with a smooth inside and solid-metal construction. Those are details of that individual product, not a standard for all cigar band rings. See the listing’s specifications.
Can you wear one as a wedding ring?
Yes. Cigar band rings are used as wedding and bridal bands, including plain-gold designs and versions with diamonds or other colored stones. The broader profile can make the ring a more visible part of a set, but whether it works alongside an engagement ring depends on the actual shapes and fit.
