Short answer: the viral videos do not prove that shoppers can buy authentic Hermès, Birkenstock or Lululemon products directly from the factories that make them. The offers reported in April 2025 were unsubstantiated; they may involve unauthorized replicas or counterfeits, but the available reporting does not establish the authenticity of every seller’s item. A product being made in China—or resembling a branded item—does not settle the question.
What did the TikTok suppliers claim?
In April 2025, videos from Chinese suppliers promoted products associated with Lululemon, Hermès and Birkenstock as direct-from-factory bargains. GQ reported that one removed account presented a cost breakdown for a Birkin bag, while another video advertised Boston-style clogs for $10 against a $165 price cited from Birkenstock’s brand site. Those figures and factory claims were statements in the videos, not independently verified product or manufacturing facts. GQ’s report said many videos had been removed and quoted TikTok as saying it removes accounts and content that violate its rules against marketing counterfeit goods.
KPBS/NPR’s April 22, 2025 report described the recurring pitch: an alleged factory owner says European luxury firms make branded products in Chinese factories, add logos elsewhere, and then sell them at a steep markup. Fashion writer Derek Guy criticized the materials and costing described in one viral Birkin video, including the speaker’s characterization of the leather. That is commentary on the example, not proof about every factory or a brand’s entire supply chain.
Can you buy an authentic Birkin or other luxury item straight from a Chinese factory?
The videos do not establish that. The key leap is from “some manufacturing takes place in China” to “this seller can provide the same finished, authentic branded product without the brand.” The reporting does not verify that leap or establish the contractual status of any particular supplier.

GQ quoted global textile and apparel consultant Margaret Bishop saying, “Any contracts they have with their supply chain would specifically ban the factory selling direct to anyone, with or without a logo, with or without finishing.” Bishop also said an unauthorized factory selling a luxury product without its logo would be acting without the brand owner’s authorization. This is expert commentary about supplier relationships; it is not product-level verification of a TikTok listing.
“Made in China” is not evidence that an item is fake, just as a claim of “same factory” is not proof it is authentic. A supplier relationship, if one exists, does not by itself give a seller permission to sell a brand’s finished goods. NPR said it sought comment from Hermès but had not received a reply by publication; the reporting therefore does not provide an on-record Hermès response to the specific viral claims.

What is the difference between a counterfeit and a dupe?
A low price or resemblance alone does not establish counterfeiting. The important distinction is whether the item is presented as a branded original or instead sold as an independent product. The Associated Press explained that the term “dupe” does not determine legality: trademark, copyright, design rights, misleading claims and consumer confusion can all matter. AP’s June 30, 2025 report discusses those distinctions.

How can shoppers assess a social-media listing?
No single clue—price, manufacturing footage, a logo, an authenticity card or a seller testimonial—verifies authenticity. Use several checks before paying:

- Look up the seller through the brand’s official channels and check whether it is listed as an authorized retailer.
- Treat extreme discounts and vague or shifting explanations of a factory relationship as reasons to pause, not as evidence of a special deal.
- Check the return policy before purchase and use a payment method with a dispute process.
- For a secondhand luxury purchase, confirm that any authentication provider supports the specific brand and currently offers the service you need.
The Federal Trade Commission’s figures show broader social-media shopping risk, not counterfeit-luxury rates. The FTC reported that consumers lost more than $1.2 billion to fraud originating on social media in 2022; its 2021 figure was about $770 million. The agency said online-shopping scams produced the largest number of social-media fraud reports in 2021, with many involving advertised goods that never arrived.
