China’s Sinograin Sells Out January Soybean Auction Ahead of U.S. Shipments

Sinograin’s January 13, 2026 auction sold out its 1.1-million-ton imported-soybean offering. The reported link to U.S. arrivals came from traders, while reserve-stock estimates remain unofficial.

China’s state stockpiler Sinograin sold all 1.1 million metric tons of imported soybeans offered at its January 13, 2026 auction, at an average 3,811 yuan ($546.29) per ton. Reuters linked the sales to incoming U.S. cargoes, but the explanation came from traders—not an announced government policy. The beans were scheduled for delivery mainly in March and April.

What Sinograin sold on January 13

Reuters reported that the auction was Sinograin’s fourth since December. The imported soybeans came from the 2022–2025 crops. All 1.1 million metric tons on offer sold, at an average price of 3,811 yuan ($546.29) per ton, with deliveries scheduled mainly for March and April. Reuters reporting syndicated by Successful Farming, January 13, 2026.

The sellout followed three December auctions, Sinograin’s first reserve sales in three months. Across those rounds, about 900,000 tons sold from roughly 1.5 million offered. Reuters said average prices and clearance rates declined with each December round; those aggregate figures do not mean every December auction cleared at the same rate or price as January’s.

Why the reserve sale was linked to U.S. shipments

Reuters connected the reserve sales with making room for expected U.S. soybean arrivals, following a trade truce with Washington that had spurred increased Chinese purchases. That rationale was reported through traders, rather than stated as an official explanation from Beijing.

One oilseed trader in Beijing, whom Reuters did not name, said: “Some crushing plants are a bit short on soybeans for March and April so they are buying from government auctions.” The same trader added: “Overall, there is ample supply of beans in the market.” The comments describe a near-term supply picture: some crushers needed beans for specific delivery months even as the trader characterized the broader market as well supplied.

Reuters reported that purchases from the current U.S. crop were estimated at 8.5 million to nearly 10 million tons as of early January 2026. That was up to 80% of the 12-million-ton commitment U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said China had pledged to meet by the end of February. Reuters also reported that at least six bulk vessels had been scheduled to load at Gulf Coast terminals in December. These are early-January purchase estimates and a December loading schedule, not a current tally of shipments delivered to China.

What is known—and not known—about China’s soybean reserves

China does not publish official data on its grain and oilseed inventories, according to Reuters. Traders estimated Sinograin held 40 million to 45 million tons of soybeans, enough for about five months of consumption. Both the stock range and the consumption coverage are trader estimates, not figures from an official Chinese inventory release. Reuters reporting syndicated by Successful Farming.

How the January result fits later auction activity

Later 2026 reports describe separate auctions, not additional details about the January 13 sale. AGRONEWS reported that a Sinograin auction on August 7 sold about 67% of a 501,000-ton imported-soybean offering. On September 22, Reuters reported a National Grain Trade Centre notice for a 514,000-ton September auction; traders viewed such sales as a way to free storage space for expected U.S. arrivals.

The September report also described China as having passed halfway toward a separate 25-million-ton U.S. soybean purchase commitment, which it said had been reached the previous October. That later commitment is distinct from the 12-million-ton figure reported in January and should not be combined with it.
