Chinese EV Brands Poised to Expand Globally in 2026: BYD, Geely, XPENG and Changan

Chinese automakers are expanding abroad, but sales, targets and model availability differ by market. Here is what buyers should know about BYD, Geely, XPENG and Changan in 2026.

Several Chinese automakers have the scale and overseas momentum to become more competitive in 2026, but no single brand is on course to take over every market. BYD has the broadest evidence of sales at scale abroad; Geely is expanding a multi-brand and service network; XPENG is pushing new rollouts; and Changan has announced ambitious targets. For car buyers, the practical question is not only which badge is expanding, but whether a specific model is sold, supported and competitively priced in their country.

Why Chinese EV brands are positioned to compete harder abroad

China is the central hub of electric-car manufacturing and trade. The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that China produced 16 million electric cars in 2025—around three-quarters of global production—and exported more than 2.5 million, over twice the previous year’s volume. Electric models made up more than 35% of China’s car exports, compared with about 20% in 2024.

The overseas mix is shifting too: four in five Chinese-made electric cars sold overseas in 2025 came from Chinese manufacturers, up from fewer than two in five in 2021, according to the IEA. Outside Europe and the United States, Chinese imports supplied 55% of electric-car sales in 2025. That figure is not a share of all cars sold: it refers specifically to electric-car sales in those markets. In many Latin American, Middle Eastern and African countries, China supplied more than 80% of electric cars.

Those numbers establish substantial industrial capacity and existing trade, not guaranteed success for every company or country. An automaker’s reported overseas sales may include different vehicle types, while NEV (new-energy vehicle) totals can include plug-in hybrids as well as battery-electric vehicles. BEV, PHEV and NEV totals are not interchangeable.

Which Chinese brands have the strongest overseas evidence?

The figures below come from company announcements and reports, except where the IEA is named. They measure different things: deliveries, sales, geographic presence, retail infrastructure or future targets. They are useful signals, not a like-for-like ranking of EV sales or proof of local availability.

Company or brand group Reported overseas evidence Expansion and ownership-support signals
BYD and DENZA BYD reported more than one million overseas sales in 2025 and more than 780,000 in the first half of 2026; it said it operated in 121 countries and regions. These are BYD-reported figures. BYD described Latin America as a leading region, Europe as a breakthrough market and Asia-Pacific as an expansion area, and cited activity at its Brazilian and Thai factories. DENZA’s European rollout and charging-network figures are announced plans, not completed results.
Geely, Lynk & Co and Zeekr Geely Auto reported 474,228 overseas sales in January–June 2026, up 158% year over year. It reported 277,189 NEV sales in that period, up 585%; the NEV figure is not a BEV-only count. Geely reported more than 2,000 sales and service outlets in over 100 markets and 13 global parts-distribution facilities. It said Geely E5/EX5 and STARRAY EM-i/EX5 EM-i models had entered more than 20 European countries.
XPENG XPENG reported 45,008 overseas deliveries in 2025, up 96% year over year, and a presence in 60 countries and regions at year-end. It reported 429,445 total deliveries in 2025, a company-wide figure that includes domestic deliveries. XPENG reported a 3,000-station self-operated charging network at the end of 2025. Its later country rollout and model announcements are plans rather than evidence that every announced market already has a car on sale.
Changan Changan’s cited overseas sales number is a target, not a report of current overseas sales. Its announced 2030 ambitions include 1.5 million overseas vehicle sales and 2.4 million NEV sales. The NEV target is not a BEV-only target.

BYD and DENZA: current scale, with premium expansion ahead

BYD’s overseas sales passed one million in 2025 for the first time, according to the company. Its July 2026 release reported more than 780,000 overseas sales in the first half of that year. The release also described its regional priorities and cited operations at factories in Brazil and Thailand. These are company-reported sales and activity; the country count does not mean every BYD model is available or supported in every one of those places.

BYD launched DENZA internationally in April 2026, naming the Z9GT shooting brake and D9 DM-i MPV as its first models for overseas customers. DENZA set a goal of entering more than 30 European countries and opening more than 150 retail stores by the end of 2026. It also announced plans for 6,000 FLASH Charging stations outside China within 12 months, including 3,000 in Europe. Those figures describe intended rollout, not stations already operating. DENZA executive vice president Stella Li presented “Technology Drives Elegance” as the brand’s definition of premium; that is positioning language, not an independent performance measure.

Geely’s advantage is a multi-brand push and support footprint

Geely Auto’s first-half 2026 overseas sales figure covers its international business, as defined by the company, and should not be read as a BEV-only total. Its European model introductions include the Geely E5, also called EX5, and STARRAY EM-i, also called EX5 EM-i. The naming varies by market, so buyers should check the local model designation and powertrain.

Geely’s 2025 results described concrete localization steps: mass production of the EX5 and EX5 EM-i began at its Indonesian plant. In Brazil, a Renault partnership planned localized EX5 EM-i production for the second half of 2026; that was a plan, not confirmation of production having started. Geely also said Zeekr had entered over 50 countries and regions, while Lynk & Co operated over 200 stores in 55 markets by November 2025. These brands share a corporate group but differ in positioning, model availability and local retail presence.

XPENG’s reported deliveries are distinct from its rollout plans

XPENG’s 2025 results provide a reported baseline: 45,008 overseas vehicles, alongside total deliveries of 429,445. In August 2026, the company said it planned to launch its L03 global model in 65 countries and regions during the year. It also announced an Australian plan involving five new models in the second half of 2026, and said global rollout of its NGP driver-assistance system would begin in 2027. A launch target or system rollout schedule does not establish that a model or feature is available, legally permitted or supported in a particular buyer’s market.

Changan’s signal is ambition, not achieved volume

Changan’s April 2026 global strategy announcement framed its Vast Ocean Plan as a move beyond exporting products toward brand and industrial globalization, with localization among its stated principles. The company set five 2030 doubling targets, including overseas vehicle sales and NEV sales, as well as revenue of RMB 600 billion. These are corporate aspirations, not a forecast or current performance. Chairman Zhu Huarong described the approach as “co development and shared prosperity” with industry partners; that statement explains the company’s strategy language, rather than independently demonstrating its likely results.

What the global figures mean for buyers in different countries

Expansion is uneven. In the European Union, Chinese imports accounted for almost 60% of electric-car imports in 2025, but represented less than 20% of total EU demand. Those are different denominators: one is the share of imported electric cars, the other is the share of all demand. In India and Viet Nam, local manufacturers supplied most demand, according to the IEA. A strong position in one region therefore cannot be assumed to transfer to another.

A company’s presence in a country or region is not the same as an authorized dealer selling a particular model there. Nor does a factory in one country guarantee that local production will lower the price of a model in another. Before treating an announced rollout as a real buying option, verify the specific model, delivery timing, warranty terms, service location and parts access with the local company or authorized retailer.

How tariffs, local production and inventory can affect the price

Trade policy can change an imported EV’s landed cost and availability, but the effect depends on destination, vehicle type, origin and local rules. The IEA identifies several 2026 constraints: overseas inventories have accumulated; China introduced BEV export licenses in January 2026; some Southeast Asian import-duty waivers expired; and Brazil and Mexico introduced new duties on electric-car imports. Rates and eligibility vary by market, so a general global tariff figure would be misleading.

Inventory is another reason not to equate export volumes with retail sales. China Association of Automobile Manufacturers figures cited by the IEA show that exports exceeded overseas sales by more than 25% in 2025, suggesting a significant increase in overseas inventory. The IEA also reported that exports more than doubled in the first quarter of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025. That early-year acceleration does not settle how the full year will end, particularly while policy and stock levels are changing.

Ten major Chinese automakers announced combined overseas sales targets above 7 million for 2026, according to the IEA. This is the aggregate of company targets, not an IEA forecast and not achieved sales. Targets can show how aggressively firms intend to expand; they do not tell buyers whether a local dealer can deliver a specific car at a specific price.

What to check before budgeting for a Chinese EV

There is no established global model-level price comparison, comprehensive reliability ranking or country-by-country availability list in the evidence cited here. Buyers should compare actual local offers rather than assume that a lower factory or headline price translates into lower ownership costs.

  • Out-the-door cost: Get a written local quote that includes taxes, duties, delivery charges, registration and any incentives. Confirm whether the quoted vehicle is imported or locally assembled.
  • Warranty and service: Check the warranty issuer, term, mileage limits, coverage exclusions and where repairs can be performed. Ask who handles roadside assistance and whether the nearest authorized service center is practical for you.
  • Parts access: Confirm availability and expected sourcing for routine service parts and collision-repair components. A broad corporate parts network does not by itself prove local stock or fast delivery.
  • Charging fit: Verify the vehicle’s connector and supported charging standards against the public network and any home charger. For home charging, confirm local voltage and current, installation requirements, vehicle compatibility and the charger’s local availability before budgeting.
  • Powertrain: Establish whether the model is a BEV or PHEV and compare it with vehicles of the same type. A company-wide NEV count may include plug-in hybrids and cannot establish the number of battery-only cars.
  • Resale and insurance: Obtain an insurance quote and check local used-car listings or valuation services for comparable models. The figures above do not establish resale values, premiums or reliability.
  • Delivery certainty: Distinguish a model already offered by a local authorized seller from an announced launch, market-entry goal or future production plan.

Are Chinese EVs taking over the global market?

No single global takeover follows from the available evidence. China has a commanding production and export role, and Chinese manufacturers are increasingly responsible for Chinese-made EVs sold abroad. But national markets differ in import rules, local competition, retail support, charging access and consumer demand. Company announcements also mix realized sales with targets and planned rollouts. The defensible conclusion is that BYD, Geely, XPENG, Changan and other Chinese groups are positioned to compete more forcefully; how much that changes the choices and prices available to a buyer depends on the buyer’s country and the specific model.
