Buying later resumed, but the pause exposed growers to local storage and cash-price pressure, while tariffs, South American competition and Chinese demand continued to shape the market. The figures below are dated to their sources, the latest of which is Reuters’ September 30, 2026 report.
What happened to U.S. soybean sales to China?
At the start of the U.S. harvest discussed in the Agri-Pulse interview, China had not yet bought from that fall’s U.S. crop. The timing mattered: a major buyer’s absence could leave more soybeans competing for nearby storage and cash buyers just as new supplies arrived.
The interruption was sharp, but it did not last unchanged. The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service’s 2026 China Oilseeds and Products Annual reported that U.S. soybean arrivals in China were zero from September through December 2025 after high tariffs curtailed trade. It also reported a subsequent resumption of procurement after an October 2025 meeting between the U.S. and Chinese presidents in Busan.
| Period or report date | Reported trade picture | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing year 2024/25 | China imported 22.9 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans, down 8% year over year. | USDA FAS 2026 annual report, citing Trade Data Monitor. |
| September–December 2025 | Zero U.S. soybean arrivals in China. | USDA FAS 2026 annual report; the report links the interruption to high tariffs. |
| February 26, 2026 | 10.8 million metric tons purchased or shipped toward a 12 million metric ton commitment. Another 2.19 million metric tons was recorded to unknown destinations; USDA said it was not confirmed as China-bound. | USDA FAS 2026 annual report, based on USDA export-sales data. |
| After the May 2026 trade deal; reported September 30, 2026 | Chinese state-run firms had bought around 13.7 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans, while private crushers had taken South American shipments. | Reuters, citing traders and crushers. This later reported figure has a different date and context from the USDA’s February tally. |
The later buying did not mean every Chinese buyer returned to U.S. supply. USDA FAS said that, at the time of its 2026 analysis, purchases had been made only by state-owned enterprises. Reuters’ September 2026 account likewise distinguished state-run buying from private processors’ South American purchases.

Why did a buying pause matter during harvest?
Soybeans that do not move to an export outlet still need a destination: on-farm storage, commercial elevators, another buyer, or another route to market. A rush of available grain can make local handling space more valuable and weaken the price a grower receives relative to the broader futures market.
Storage concerns were regional, not a national capacity measurement
In the Agri-Pulse interview, John Newton, Terrain Ag’s executive head, said an analyst’s comparison of expected supplies with on-farm and all-farm storage pointed to “pretty tight” conditions in some areas, especially the Upper Plains. He also questioned whether soybeans normally moving through Delta export terminals could be stored if sales did not move. Newton’s assessment was about expected supply and capacity in particular regions; it was not a USDA estimate that the country as a whole lacked storage.

Newton put the point bluntly: “We’re going to produce more than we have storage capacity, and that’s a challenge.” That was his interview assessment, not a verified nationwide measurement.
Basis is the local cash-price signal
Futures prices provide a broad market reference; basis is the difference between a local cash price and the relevant futures price. Basis can weaken when nearby supply is abundant, transport is constrained, or local buyers have limited capacity—even if futures are moving for broader market reasons.

Newton cited a Red River Valley basis of about $1.80 per bushel under the Chicago price at the time of the interview. That is a dated observation for one region, not a current quote or a national average. It illustrates why a national export headline cannot tell an individual grower what a local elevator will pay.
Why did Chinese buyers turn away—and why did buying resume?
Tariffs affected the relative cost of U.S. beans, but the commercial decision also depended on competing origins, Chinese stocks and demand from crushers and livestock producers.

Tariffs and South American competition changed the delivered-cost equation
USDA FAS’s 2025 China Oilseeds and Products Annual described an additional 10-percentage-point tariff on U.S. soybeans announced to start March 10, 2025. Its analysis assumed tariffs would persist through marketing year 2025/26 and said the added cost reduced U.S. competitiveness, noting Brazil’s persistent price advantage. That report describes its assumptions for that period; it should not be read as a statement of the tariff rate in force in October 2026.
In its 2026 annual report, USDA FAS said a remaining 13% tariff and available South American supplies were factors in the limited buying it described. It also noted that Brazilian prices were significantly below U.S. origin as the new Brazilian crop entered the market. Those are findings tied to that report’s analysis, not a timeless comparison of prices.
Best Value
- HEIRLOOM VARIETY & HIGH YIELD: Outsidepride soy bean seeds is a robust heirloom strain known for its high yield, producing over 3 bushels per acre more than the popular Manokin variety, making it a valuable choice for maximizing harvest output. This variety is perfect for outdoor gardening enthusiasts looking to optimize their yard space.
- RICH IN PROTEIN & OIL WITH VERSATILE USES: Containing about 18% oil and 38% protein, this soybean variety is perfect for producing high-quality soy bean oil and protein-rich meal. These soybeans can be processed into a wide range of products, including soy milk powder, soy flour, soy protein, tofu, and various industrial non-food products, showcasing its versatility. Ideal for making various soy-based meals such as edamame snacks.
- OPTIMAL PLANTING GUIDELINES FOR MAXIMUM YIELD: For best results, plant soybean seeds at a depth of 0.75 to 1.5 inches, with row spacing between 7.5 and 15 inches, depending on soil type and tillage. This ensures uniform seed placement and optimal growth, adapting well to midwestern states and capturing a significant percentage of non-GMO acres.
- HIGH-PROTEIN ANIMAL FEED: The high-protein fiber left after oil extraction is ideal for animal feed, particularly for poultry and swine industries, which consume over half of the processed soybean meal. This meal is also crucial for cattle, other farm animals, and pets, ensuring they receive the necessary nutrients for growth and development. A great addition to feed mixes for cowpeas and other legumes.
- ECONOMIC AND NUTRITIONAL: As the most economically important bean globally, soybeans provide essential vegetable protein for millions and are key ingredients in hundreds of chemical products. A 60-pound bushel of our soybeans seed yields about 11 pounds of crude soybean oil and 47 pounds of soybean meal. Beneficial for producing shelf-stable goods for long-term use.
State buyers and private crushers did not make the same choice
USDA FAS noted analysts’ concern that Chinese state firms had limited storage and crushing capacity. Reuters reported on September 30, 2026, that private processors had covered much of their needs through early February with Brazilian and Argentine cargoes and state reserves. Its report said those processors continued taking South American supply even after state-run firms had bought U.S. soybeans following the May trade deal.
Stocks and processing economics constrained later demand
Reuters reported that China’s soybean buying was likely to decline in the following months as animal-feed demand weakened and crushing margins turned negative. It also reported that soybeans were excluded from proposed tariff reductions following the prior week’s summit and that U.S. beans faced an additional 10% tariff. These details reflect Reuters’ September 30, 2026 reporting, including information from traders and crushers, rather than an official USDA forecast.
For inventory context, Reuters said market-data provider Mysteel put soybean stocks at 111 Chinese crushing plants at 7.96 million metric tons in the week of September 25, 2026—the highest level in at least 15 years. That is a Mysteel figure reported by Reuters, not a USDA inventory estimate.

A decline in export buying can add pressure, but its effect is not uniform across U.S. farms. A grower’s realized price depends on the local cash market and available outlets as well as futures. Storage availability, handling and transport access, and the timing of local bids can all matter when a major export channel slows.

- Export demand: A pause can leave more new-crop supply seeking other buyers or storage, but later purchases show why a harvest-time interruption should not be treated as a permanent halt.
- Local basis: Regional cash bids can diverge from futures because local supply, transport and buyer availability differ. The Red River Valley figure in the interview is an example from that place and time, not a benchmark for other locations.
- Buyer and origin: State-owned Chinese firms’ purchases did not establish that private crushers would switch from Brazilian or Argentine supply. Buyers compare delivered costs and the availability of competing crops.
- Demand and inventories: Feed demand, crushing margins and stocks affect how much importing is commercially attractive, even when a diplomatic agreement prompts purchases.
For a farm-level decision, the national trade figures cannot substitute for current local bids, storage terms or delivery options. They explain the forces behind the market; they do not establish what any particular farm should store or sell.
Quick Recap
How to read updates on China’s soybean buying
- Check the date and measure. Imports, arrivals, export sales and purchases reported by traders are different indicators and may cover different periods.
- Separate buyer types. A reported state-enterprise purchase does not by itself show that private crushers are buying U.S. beans.
- Compare origins on the same basis. Tariffs, freight, crop timing and available stocks affect whether U.S., Brazilian or Argentine beans are attractive to a buyer.
- Pair national trade news with local cash information. Futures and export totals do not reveal a local elevator’s current bid or storage availability.
