China’s semaglutide compound patent expired in March 2026, opening the possibility of more competition for Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus. But as of October 8, 2026, the evidence available for this article does not establish that a Chinese generic or biosimilar injection has received approval or launched. Patent expiry is not the same as regulatory approval, pharmacy availability or a confirmed price cut.
What changed when China’s semaglutide patent expired?
China’s Supreme People’s Court upheld the validity of Novo Nordisk’s semaglutide compound patent on December 31, 2025. Novo’s 2025 annual filing says the patent nevertheless expired in China in March 2026; a China Intellectual Property Protection information page gives the date as March 20. The court decision upheld the patent’s validity while it remained in force—it did not extend protection beyond its stated expiry.
In its announcement about the ruling, Novo Nordisk president and CEO Mike Doustdar called the outcome “very positive for semaglutide” and said it demonstrated government support for protecting medical innovation. That was Doustdar’s characterization of the decision, not a quotation from the court.
Are lower-cost Chinese versions approved and for sale?
The available records do not establish whether a Chinese semaglutide generic or biosimilar injection had received National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) approval or launched by October 8, 2026. That is an unresolved status question, not proof that no product has since been approved. Patent expiry can permit companies to pursue entry, but it does not itself authorize a medicine for sale.

Novo’s 2025 filing says the company received notices that manufacturers had filed applications for generic versions related to Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus. An application is not an approval, and a product’s development or filing history does not establish that patients can buy it. The filing also does not establish a current launch date or a generic price.
Which companies and candidates are in the picture?
A 2025 expert document filed with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) lists development candidates from Livzon Group and Hangzhou Jiuyuan, described as semaglutide biosimilar or generic products with NDA-related milestones. It also lists a China Resources Double-Crane semaglutide candidate in Phase III. These dated development records identify activity, not a subsequent NMPA decision or commercial launch.

Novo’s filing also describes generic applications relating to Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus, but the cited material does not identify every applicant or show that any resulting product was approved. The South China Morning Post reported on March 26, 2026, on Chinese manufacturers’ efforts to compete after expiry and other domestic obesity-drug contenders; that competitive context does not answer the outstanding NMPA approval-and-launch question.
What does the dated Ozempic price reference tell patients?
A 2025 industry overview filed with HKEX reports an NRDL price of RMB 478.8 for Ozempic’s 2 mg/1.5 mL presentation and estimated monthly spending of about RMB 957. The underlying status in that overview was reported as of February 28, 2025. These are dated reference figures—not an October 2026 retail quote, a generic price, or a like-for-like comparison of what a particular patient pays after reimbursement.

No current, named estimate for the price of a Chinese semaglutide generic or its likely market share is established in the available sources. Claims that a copy is already a certain number of times cheaper, or that it has already captured a defined share of the market, would require current product-specific evidence.
Why Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus are not interchangeable labels
These brands are associated with the same active ingredient, semaglutide, but differ in formulation and approved use. Ozempic and Wegovy are injectable products; Rybelsus is oral. The 2025 HKEX industry overview identifies Ozempic’s indication as type 2 diabetes. Approval of a generic for one product presentation would not, by itself, establish approval for another formulation, brand-related presentation or indication, including weight management. Patients should not treat the brands or products as interchangeable based only on the active ingredient.

What could still delay or limit competition?
- Regulatory review: Companies may have filed applications or advanced candidates, but those steps are distinct from NMPA approval and commercial sale.
- Possible data-protection constraints: A China Intellectual Property Protection information page dated May 11, 2026, reports that manufacturers have raised possible data-protection constraints lasting until April 2027. The material describes a potential issue; it does not establish a definitive legal ruling that generic approval is barred until then.
- Product-specific scope: Formulation and indication matter. A decision covering one injectable or oral product does not settle the status of every semaglutide medicine.
- Commercial availability and price: Even after an approval, actual launch, supply and a comparable patient price would need to be confirmed separately. No current generic price comparison is established by the dated records cited here.
The evidence therefore supports a credible possibility of increased competition after patent expiry, not a confirmed market shake-up already visible in approved products, sales or lower patient costs. Readers assessing a current product should look for an NMPA approval and a manufacturer’s launch disclosure, then compare the same formulation, package size, indication and reimbursement basis.
