China’s CJ-1000A is a civil turbofan developed for the COMAC C919, but its current certification and service status are not established by the available official record. The key distinction: dated design and regulatory milestones show a program in development; they do not show that the engine is certified or flying in commercial service.
1. What is China’s CJ-1000A engine?
AECC Commercial Aircraft Engines describes the CJ1000A as a civil high-bypass turbofan with two shafts and direct drive. The manufacturer says it is intended to meet the power needs of twin-engine, single-aisle aircraft in the 150–180-seat class. Those are the manufacturer’s design description and target category, not independently verified performance findings. AECC Commercial Aircraft Engines’ product page was published June 18, 2025.
AECC also characterizes the engine as having low emissions, low noise and low fuel consumption. The page provides no numerical measurements or comparison tests to substantiate those qualitative claims, so they should be read as product claims rather than established advantages.
2. What aircraft is the CJ-1000A meant for?
China’s Ministry of Science and Technology specifically identified the C919 as the aircraft for which the CJ1000A was intended. In a 2017 announcement, the ministry described it as the country’s first large-bypass turbofan developed under civil airworthiness requirements with fully independent intellectual property rights. For context, COMAC lists the baseline C919 at 158–192 seats and a range of 4,075–5,555 km. These are aircraft figures, not CJ-1000A specifications; the seating range also differs from AECC’s stated 150–180-seat target category for the engine. COMAC says the C919 received a CAAC aircraft type certificate on September 29, 2022. That certificate applies to the aircraft, not to the CJ-1000A engine. COMAC’s C919 information.
3. What do the dated development milestones show?
Concept design review in December 2017
The Ministry of Science and Technology reported that the project passed a concept design review on December 9–10, 2017. The review was organized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, CAAC and the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense. The ministry said the milestone marked a move from technology validation into engineering development. This records the program’s stage at that time; it is not a current progress report. Proposed special conditions in April 2023
CAAC issued a public notice in April 2023 proposing three special conditions for the engine and inviting comments for 15 working days. The draft topics covered composite fan blades; fan, compressor and turbine rotor integrity; and icing hazards involving supercooled large droplets, mixed-phase conditions, ice crystals and snow. This documents a step in the regulator’s rulemaking or review process, not approval of the engine or completion of certification. CAAC’s public notice.
4. Has the CJ-1000A been certified, and is it flying on the C919?
The available record does not establish a current CJ-1000A engine type certificate, commercial use or an entry-into-service date as of October 8, 2026. The U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission’s 2024 annual report said the AECC C919 engine had not yet been approved by CAAC at the time of that report. Therefore, the evidence cited here does not support saying the CJ-1000A is flying on C919s or naming a date when it will enter service. CAAC’s 2023 consultation and COMAC’s 2022 aircraft certificate answer different questions: neither demonstrates that the engine itself has been certified.

The sources establish the CJ-1000A’s intended role, but they do not provide comparable figures for it and the engine currently used on the C919. No sourced side-by-side data is available here for thrust, fuel burn, noise, emissions, reliability or lifecycle cost, so a ranking would be unsupported.
