China is a vast, economically significant country with sharply varied regions and travel experiences. Official 2025 figures put its population at 1.40489 billion and GDP at 140.1879 trillion yuan. For visitors, the useful takeaways are the scale of domestic travel, the distinction between tourism activity and tourism’s measured contribution to GDP, and the fact that entry rules depend on each traveler’s nationality and itinerary.
China at a glance: population and economy
The National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS) reported preliminary 2025 GDP of 140,187.9 billion yuan, an increase of 5.0 percent from 2024. The tertiary sector accounted for 57.7 percent of GDP. The country’s population at year end was 1,404.89 million, down 3.39 million from the previous year. These are national-level figures, not a description of every province, city or household. What the official tourism figures measure
Tourism statistics count trips and activity, not necessarily distinct people. NBS reported 6.52 billion domestic trips in 2025 and domestic tourist expenditure of 6,300.3 billion yuan. Those trip totals should not be read as the number of unique travelers.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s 2025 bulletin reports 154.5 million inbound visitor trips, up 17.1 percent. That total comprises 35.17 million trips by foreign visitors and 119.32 million visits by residents of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. These are visits, not a count of unique individuals. The same bulletin’s English rendering gives a domestic resident trip figure at a different scale from the NBS English communiqué; the figures should not be silently treated as interchangeable. Scenic areas and heritage sites
At the end of 2025, the Ministry counted 16,994 A-grade scenic areas and 60 World Heritage properties in China. It reported 75.1 hundred million visits to A-grade scenic areas and 5,544.9 hundred million yuan in revenue for those areas. These totals apply to defined administrative categories; they do not encompass every attraction or form of travel in the country. Ministry of Culture and Tourism bulletin.
Tourism’s GDP contribution is not visitor spending
NBS revised its estimate of value added by tourism and related industries in 2023 to 5.4832 trillion yuan, or 4.24 percent of GDP, following the Fifth National Economic Census. Of that total, tourism activity accounted for 4.9890 trillion yuan and related industries 494.2 billion yuan. Value added measures production under a defined statistical framework—including transport, accommodation, dining, sightseeing, shopping, recreation and entertainment, supporting services and government tourism management. It is not the same as total visitor expenditure or tourism receipts. NBS, Value Added of China’s Tourism and Related Industries Takes up 4.24 pct of GDP in 2023.

What visitors may find across the country
China’s size makes a single national snapshot a poor substitute for choosing a region and itinerary. The official tourism portal highlights experiences ranging from cuisine, cultural immersion and natural scenery to winter travel. Its featured examples include the Forbidden City, Dazu Rock Carvings, Jingdezhen porcelain, Chongqing’s Liziba monorail and Mount Tai. These are examples of official tourism promotion, not an independent rating of visitor experience. Travel China, the official tourism website of the People’s Republic of China.
When shaping a trip, match the destination to the time available, season and climate, transport and accommodation needs, and the kind of experience you want. A multi-region itinerary may involve very different conditions from a visit centered on one city or attraction. The official portal also provides visitor-preparation resources, including visa-policy information and guidance on exchanging foreign currency.

Visa-free entry and transit: check your own eligibility
As reported by the State Council on September 24, 2026, unilateral visa-free entry had expanded to eligible travelers from 50 countries for stays of up to 30 days. The report also said eligible travelers of certain nationalities could use visa-free transit for up to 240 hours; 57 countries were listed for that program at the time. These are conditional policies, not a blanket visa exemption. Eligibility can depend on nationality, route, purpose, permitted area and other current requirements. Check the official rules for your specific trip before booking or departure: State Council report on inbound tourism and travel access and the Travel China visitor portal.
The State Council report also describes 2026–2030 plans to make visas, payments, tax refunds, guided tours, accommodation and transport more convenient for international visitors. Those are stated policy ambitions, not a guarantee that every service or procedure has already changed for an individual traveler.
