Are more Chi-Chi’s restaurants opening?
More restaurants are planned or under consideration, but no additional opening is confirmed in the company statements and filing cited here. Chi-Chi’s April 21, 2026 annual report filed with the SEC reported one restaurant open and said the company planned additional U.S. restaurants. In August 2026, the company said it was evaluating future locations; its September anniversary update said it was exploring opportunities to reach more communities. Michael McDermott, CEO, said in the September update that the company was “exploring opportunities to bring Chi-Chi’s to even more communities.” This is the company’s stated ambition, not a confirmed expansion schedule. No number of future sites, target markets, or opening dates has been announced in these updates.

When did Chi-Chi’s return, and what happened to the original chain?
The original U.S. chain was founded in 1975 by restaurateur Marno McDermott and former Green Bay Packers player Max McGee. It grew to more than 200 U.S. locations, filed for bankruptcy in 2003, and closed its final restaurant in 2004, according to the Associated Press. Associated Press history of the chain.
The restaurant comeback is a new operation led by Michael McDermott, Marno McDermott’s son. Hormel Foods owns the Chi-Chi’s trademark; a December 2024 announcement said Michael McDermott’s company had an agreement to use the name for physical restaurant locations. The Associated Press also reported that a 2003 hepatitis A outbreak at a Pennsylvania Chi-Chi’s location was linked to green onions used as garnish and in salsa; four people died and 660 became ill. The chain’s bankruptcy and final closure followed amid ownership changes and competition. The outbreak is an important part of the brand’s history, but it should not be treated as the sole explanation for the chain’s closure. Associated Press reporting.
What does the relaunched restaurant serve?
The 2025 opening announcement described a refreshed restaurant serving a mix of legacy favorites and updated dishes, including chimichangas, quesabirria tacos, seafood enchiladas, nachos, and burritos. In August 2026, Chi-Chi’s announced a new lunch lineup and the return of the Twice Grilled BBQ Burrito, Seafood Nachos, and Margarita Chicken Tacos. What to check before traveling to a new location
For now, St. Louis Park is the only confirmed U.S. relaunch restaurant in the cited company updates and filing. If Chi-Chi’s announces more sites, check the restaurant’s own location information for an address and opening date rather than relying on general expansion language. The distinction matters: a company can plan additional restaurants without having secured or announced individual sites.
