The often-quoted figure of 6,000–7,000 was Chevron’s planned reduction in its global workforce—not a Perth tally. Separate reports covered larger-scale redundancies among workers building the Gorgon LNG project on Barrow Island.
What Chevron announced in Perth
A syndicated S&P Capital IQ item republished by MarketScreener reported that Perth head-office employees had been notified of cuts expected before Christmas 2015. It described them as part of a wider workforce cull, but gave no number for the Perth office. The exact local head-office job total is therefore not established by the reviewed reports. MarketScreener’s item displays an August 12, 2015 date; because that date appears before coverage of Chevron’s October global announcement, it should not be used to infer a definitive sequence between the notification and the later plan.

Keep the reported job-cut figures separate
| Figure | Workforce and location | What the report establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 6,000–7,000 employees | Chevron’s global workforce | Chevron’s planned reduction over the following years, announced in October 2015; it is not a Perth head-office count. The Guardian reported the announcement. |
| More than 1,200 jobs | Gorgon construction project, Barrow Island | AAP reported approximately 530 electrical workers and another 700 trades roles in December 2015. These were project jobs, distinct from the Perth office notification. The Guardian’s AAP report. |
| Up to 1,000 workers | Gorgon project, Barrow Island | ABC News reported on December 11 that up to 1,000 workers had been made redundant earlier than anticipated. This is a separate report and should not be added to AAP’s later figure as an independent total; the accounts may overlap and use different estimates. ABC News’s report. |
Why jobs were being cut
Chevron’s October 2015 announcement came amid falling oil prices, concerns about oversupply and weaker demand. The Guardian reported that the company planned lower investment alongside the global workforce reduction. Chevron chairman and CEO John Watson said, “With the lower investment, we anticipate reducing our employee workforce by 6,000–7,000.”
In December, AAP reported Brent futures had reached US$36 a barrel, their weakest level in more than 11 years. That is a contemporaneous market figure, not evidence of how many Perth office jobs were cut or proof that any particular redundancy was caused solely by the oil price. The reporting describes a broader downturn and reduced spending, not a precise cause for each job loss.

How the Perth notification differed from the Gorgon redundancies
The Perth report concerned corporate head-office employees told to expect pre-Christmas cuts. The Gorgon reports concerned construction workers at the Barrow Island project site, including electrical workers and tradespeople. They describe different locations and worker groups, so the project figures cannot be used to fill the gap in the Perth office count.
