ChatGPT’s iOS and Android apps had generated an estimated $2 billion in global consumer spending since launching in May 2023, according to Appfigures estimates reported by TechCrunch on August 15, 2025. Appfigures put lifetime spending at $2.91 per download. These are estimates of mobile app-store spending through that report’s cutoff—not audited OpenAI financial results, an installation fee, or a measure of all ChatGPT revenue.
How much money has ChatGPT made from its app?
Appfigures estimated that consumers had spent $2 billion globally through ChatGPT’s iOS and Android apps since the apps launched in May 2023. TechCrunch reported the estimate on August 15, 2025. It describes cumulative consumer spending through the mobile apps up to the report’s cutoff, not a calendar-year total or OpenAI’s net proceeds. TechCrunch’s report attributes the figures to Appfigures; it does not provide enough methodology to independently reproduce the estimate.
The same report said the apps generated an estimated $1.35 billion in spending from January through July 2025, up 673% from $174 million in the corresponding months of 2024. That works out to roughly $193 million a month in the first seven months of 2025, compared with about $25 million a month in the same period of 2024. These are period-specific estimates, not recurring monthly guarantees.
What does $2.91 per install mean?
Appfigures’ $2.91 figure is estimated lifetime global app-store spending divided by the apps’ downloads. It is an aggregate ratio, not a fee users pay to install ChatGPT and not the average bill of an identified user. Downloads are the denominator; estimated consumer spending through the apps is the numerator. The calculation does not say how many downloaders paid, how much any particular subscriber spent, or how much OpenAI kept after platform fees.

Country figures show why the global average needs context
In the August 2025 TechCrunch report, Appfigures estimated $10 in spending per download in the United States. The U.S. accounted for 38% of lifetime app revenue, while Germany accounted for 5.3% of lifetime spending. Download shares differed: India accounted for 13.7% of estimated lifetime downloads and the U.S. 10.3%. Appfigures estimated about 690 million global installs by then, with an average of roughly 45 million downloads a month. The figures are estimates, and per-download spending varies by market; these country shares do not establish what an individual user paid.
Does the $2 billion include ChatGPT subscriptions on the web?
No. The $2 billion estimate concerns consumer spending through the iOS and Android apps. It does not include subscriptions purchased through ChatGPT’s website. TechCrunch also noted that OpenAI earns money through business offerings and APIs, which are separate from app-store transactions. A person may use the mobile app while paying through another channel, but that payment is outside this particular app-spending estimate.

Is $2 billion ChatGPT’s total revenue?
No. It is an estimate of one revenue channel’s consumer spending, not total OpenAI revenue. It should also not be read as the amount OpenAI received: consumer spending and net publisher receipts are different measures, and the reported story does not give a net-receipts calculation. Web subscriptions, business plans, API usage and other channels make the company’s overall revenue question broader than the app-store figure.

Later reporting offers useful context, but it is not a direct revision of Appfigures’ 2025 lifetime estimate. Sensor Tower reported that ChatGPT generated $3.4 billion in global in-app purchase revenue during calendar 2025 and ranked third among the highest-grossing apps, behind TikTok and Google One. That is a different analytics provider and a calendar-year in-app-purchase measure, so it should not be added to or substituted for the earlier cumulative consumer-spending figure. Sensor Tower’s January 2026 State of Mobile report gives the later ranking and estimate.

Sensor Tower’s June 2026 release said ChatGPT mobile reached one billion monthly active users in May 2026. It also projected more than $4 billion in global in-app purchase revenue for AI apps in the first half of 2026. These are later audience and market figures, not Appfigures measures of lifetime ChatGPT spending per download. Sensor Tower’s State of AI 2026 release reports those estimates. Sensor Tower separately estimated global app in-app purchases at $167 billion for calendar 2025. Its State of Mobile report provides that market context.

How to read app-revenue estimates
- Check the period: lifetime spending since launch, a calendar year, and a seven-month period answer different questions.
- Check the measure: consumer spending, in-app purchase revenue, net receipts, and revenue per download are not interchangeable.
- Check the channel: app-store transactions do not capture web subscriptions, enterprise sales, or API revenue.
- Check the source: Appfigures and Sensor Tower are third-party app analytics providers; their estimates are not company-reported or audited financial statements.
