The ten examples below are evidence-backed, not a definitive rarity ranking. Their price references range from a 2022 guide to individual auction results through 2025, so treat them as dated benchmarks—not guaranteed current values.
How much is a rare Pontiac muscle car worth?
The best available figures are a mix of historical price-guide estimates and reported auction results. They are not interchangeable: a guide median is not a sale price, and a sale of one unusually well-preserved car does not establish a typical value. All amounts below retain the currency and date given by the cited source.
| Pontiac configuration | Rarity evidence | Published value evidence |
|---|---|---|
| 1962 Catalina Super Duty | Hot Rod reported 162 Super Duty Catalinas in 1962: 155 with the SD-421 and seven with the SD-389, based on production records (2008). | Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide: $145,500 median for the 1962 Catalina Super Duty. This is a dated guide estimate, not a current sale price. |
| 1962 Grand Prix Super Duty | Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide lists 16 built. | Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide: $169,500 median. Historical guide estimate. |
| 1963 Catalina Super Duty | Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide lists 77 built. | Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide: $274,500 median. Separately, Hagerty’s search-indexed valuation page reports a $46,000 sale on July 6, 2026; the live listing and the car’s condition are not established here, so do not treat that result as a representative value. |
| 1963 Tempest Super Duty | Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide lists 11 built. | Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide: $450,000 median. Historical guide estimate, not an asking price or guaranteed sale result. |
| 1969 GTO Judge Ram Air IV | Sports Car Market’s 2022 guide lists 6,725 Judges and 108 Judge convertibles for 1969; these are broader totals, not a count for the Ram Air IV configuration. | Sports Car Market’s 2022 guide advises a 75% Ram Air IV adjustment on relevant 1967–69 entries. That is a guide adjustment, not a measured premium on every sale; a separate current value for this exact configuration is not stated. |
| 1970 GTO Judge convertible, Ram Air IV, automatic | Mecum reports 168 Judge convertibles in 1970, including 17 with Ram Air IV and seven combining Ram Air IV with an automatic transmission. | Sports Car Market’s 2022 guide gives a $137,500 median for the broader 1970 Judge convertible category; it does not state a separate median for the seven-car engine-and-transmission combination. Mecum describes a former factory exhibition car from the Chuck Cocoma collection, but its final sale price is not stated. |
| 1969 Trans Am Ram Air IV | The cited auction-result records identify the Ram Air IV configuration, but do not establish its total production count. | Marque’s auction aggregation records separate sales of US$440,000 in January 2023 and US$357,500 in May 2024. These are individual results, not a current guaranteed value or a like-for-like price trend. |
| 1973 Trans Am SD-455 | RM Sotheby’s 2014 catalogue states that 252 SD-455 Trans Ams were produced, including 180 automatics. | Sports Car Market’s 2022 guide: $67,500 median. Separate reported sales include US$165,000 at Gooding Christie’s in 2013, US$286,000 for a Mecum sale recorded by Marque in May 2024, and CA$341,000 including buyer’s premium at Miller & Miller in June 2025. The Canadian-dollar result was for a pristine, unrestored former Toronto Auto Show display car; it is not directly comparable to the other figures. |
| 1973 Firebird Formula SD-455 | Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide lists 43 built. | Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide: $49,500 median. Historical guide estimate. |
| 1974 Firebird Formula SD-455 | Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide lists 58 built. | Sports Car Market’s 2022 Pocket Price Guide: $59,000 median. Historical guide estimate; Trans Am SD-455 sales are a different body-style configuration and should not be substituted. |
Sports Car Market’s figures are all from its 2022 Pocket Price Guide. Auction amounts come from separate events and cars: Gooding Christie’s (2013), Marque’s aggregation of Mecum results (2023–25), and Miller & Miller Auctions (2025). Marque reports United States Trans Am auction data through August 31, 2026, but its aggregate is not a substitute for checking each lot’s condition and terms. None of these sources provides a complete, comparable current valuation for every configuration in the table.
Which Pontiac muscle cars are the rarest?
“Rarest” depends on what is being counted. A broad model-year production total can include several engines and transmissions; a particular engine, body and gearbox combination may be far scarcer. The strongest examples here are the seven 1970 Judge convertibles with Ram Air IV and automatic transmission, the 11 1963 Tempest Super Duties, and the 16 1962 Grand Prix Super Duties. Those counts do not prove a strict rank across all Pontiac muscle cars: the sources do not supply comparable production totals for every exact configuration.
#1 Best Overall
- V8 POWER: The model features a 400 cubic inch V8 engine, reflecting the muscle and power that defined the GTO's reputation.
- DETAILED SUSPENSION & EXHAUST: The kit incorporates separate rear suspension and exhaust detailing, adding to the realism of the model.
- BUCKET SEATS & CONSOLE: The model's interior features bucket seats and a floor shifter with a console, capturing the iconic look and feel of the GTO.
- OPTIONAL SUPERCHARGER: For those seeking more power, the kit offers an optional supercharger, allowing you to customize your model.
- CLEAR & COMPREHENSIVE INSTRUCTIONS: The included instructions are clear and user-friendly, making the kit accessible to modelers of different skill levels, from beginners to experienced hobbyists.
Early Super Duty cars
Hot Rod’s 2008 account, citing production records, reports 179 Super-Duty Pontiacs for 1962: 16 Grand Prixs, 162 Catalinas and one car not accounted for in those model counts. Of the Catalinas, 155 received the SD-421 and seven the SD-389. The same article recounts a Motor Trend test of a 1962 Catalina Super Duty in which Roger Huntington reported a 13.9-second quarter-mile at 107 mph. That is a historical test result, not a claim about the performance of every surviving car today.
The 1963 Tempest Super Duty’s guide-listed count of 11 makes it another unusually scarce example. Its $450,000 figure is Sports Car Market’s 2022 median, not evidence that every example would sell for that amount.
Rank #2
- 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge
- 1:24 Scale, Die-Cast Metal, Rubber Tires
- Opening Doors, Hood, Trunk
Judge and Trans Am combinations
The 1970 Judge figures show why configuration matters: Mecum reports 168 Judge convertibles overall, 17 with Ram Air IV, and only seven with both Ram Air IV and automatic transmission. The seven-car figure is for that precise combination, not for all 1970 Judges or all Ram Air IV cars. For 1969, Sports Car Market’s broader totals—6,725 Judges and 108 convertibles—do not establish how many were Ram Air IV convertibles.
For the 1973 Trans Am SD-455, RM Sotheby’s catalogue gives a broader model count of 252, including 180 automatics. A specific car’s originality and history can matter at least as much to its sale result as the model-wide count.

Why reported prices can differ so much
Rare-car prices are comparisons between individual cars, not just model names. The 1973 SD-455 results illustrate the problem: a US-dollar guide median, a 2013 US-dollar auction result, later Mecum sales recorded by Marque, and a 2025 Canadian-dollar sale including buyer’s premium refer to different cars, dates, currencies and sale conditions. They do not form a clean year-by-year market index.
The Miller & Miller car was described by the auction house as a pristine, unrestored former Toronto Auto Show display car with nearly every option. Miller & Miller characterized it as “the ultimate muscle car”; that is the auction house’s promotional language, not an objective ranking. Its CA$341,000 total should be understood in that context and with the buyer’s premium included.
Rank #4

How to judge a Pontiac’s value before buying or selling
Use production rarity to narrow the comparison, then assess the individual car. For a high-horsepower Catalina, Hagerty advises that documentation should support the engine currently fitted. RM Sotheby’s described a Trans Am accompanied by Pontiac Historical Services (PHS) documentation, ownership history, title and window sticker—useful examples of the records that can help establish a car’s identity and provenance.
Quick Recap
Best Value
- Authentically licensed product from Pontiac
- A true American muscle car, this 1971 Pontiac GTO has been brought to you in a 1:24 die - cast model
- Crafted from durable materials such as 100% die - cast metal and premium rubber tires.
- Our high - end casting method allows for feature rich details, such as an opening hood, doors, detailed interior, and trunk.
- This premium die - cast model is a must have for any Pontiac collection
- Match the configuration. Compare the same model year, body style, engine and transmission. A Judge convertible total does not tell you the count or value of a Ram Air IV automatic example.
- Check the identity records. Review PHS documentation and other vehicle records, and confirm that the installed engine is supported by the documentation. Do not infer matching numbers from a model badge or seller description alone.
- Assess condition and originality. Record restoration quality, unrestored components, mileage and any changes from factory specification. “Restored” and “unrestored” are not interchangeable condition grades.
- Read the sale terms. Identify whether a quoted figure is a guide estimate, hammer price or reported total, whether buyer’s premium is included, and whether the amount is in US or Canadian dollars.
- Use dated results as comparables, not promises. A sale can anchor a discussion only after you account for its date, provenance, venue, condition and specification. Ask a qualified specialist to evaluate the specific car before relying on a broad guide median or a standout auction result.
