Chase is set to replace Goldman Sachs as the issuer of Apple Card, but the transfer has not happened yet. Apple and Chase announced the agreement on January 7, 2026, and estimated that the transition would take about 24 months. It remains subject to closing conditions and regulatory approvals. For now, existing cardholders can keep using their cards and do not need to reapply or take steps to migrate.

What Apple Card users should do now

Nothing about the announced handover requires immediate action from cardholders. Apple says customers can continue using Apple Card as usual, manage accounts in Apple Wallet or at card.apple.com, and pay balances as they do today. Goldman Sachs remains responsible for operating and servicing the program until the transition is complete. Apple’s transition FAQ says customers do not need to apply for a new card.

What is confirmed about the transfer

Question What is confirmed
Who will issue Apple Card? Chase is planned to replace Goldman Sachs as issuer after the transition closes. The agreement is not yet complete. Apple’s announcement says closing is subject to conditions and regulatory approvals.
When will it happen? The companies estimated approximately 24 months from their January 7, 2026 announcement. That is an estimate, not a fixed closing date; Goldman says the timing could change or the deal may not close if conditions are not met. Goldman’s announcement
What happens to open-account balances? Balances on open Apple Card accounts are expected to move to Chase when the transition is complete. Apple’s announcement
Which payment network will the card use? Mastercard is to remain the network. Apple’s announcement
Will card numbers or physical cards change? Not yet specified. Apple says it will share details about card numbers, if any, and any new physical cards closer to the transition. Apple’s FAQ
What happens to Savings after the handover? Apple has not announced the final arrangements. Apple says Savings accounts are currently provided by Goldman Sachs Bank USA and that it will share more information as the transition approaches. Apple’s FAQ

What continues during the transition

Apple says the existing card experience will continue during the transition, including Daily Cash rewards of up to 3%, account management through Wallet and card.apple.com, Apple Card Family, Savings access, and Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI) for eligible Apple purchases. Apple also lists no annual, late, or foreign transaction fees. These are statements about continuity during the transition; they do not establish what terms, eligibility rules, or account features may apply after Chase takes over.

ACMI is a limited 0% APR option

ACMI is available only when selected at checkout for eligible U.S. Apple purchases and is subject to credit approval and available credit limit. A regular Apple Card purchase does not automatically qualify for 0% financing. Apple’s FAQ

Published APR is dated and account-specific

As of July 1, 2026, Apple lists a variable APR of 17.49%–27.74% for new accounts, depending on creditworthiness. That published range is not a rate for every cardholder and does not predict what terms will apply after the issuer transition. Apple’s FAQ

Why the banks describe the deal as financially significant

The companies’ disclosures describe a large portfolio and different accounting effects. Their figures refer to separate items and should not be added together as if they were a single purchase price or transaction-cost total.

Company disclosure What the figure means
JPMorgan Chase: more than $20 billion in estimated card balances Chase said the portfolio purchase was estimated to bring over $20 billion of balances onto its platform. This is an estimated portfolio balance, not a stated purchase price. Chase’s 2026 announcement
JPMorgan Chase: $2.2 billion provision for credit losses Chase said it expected to recognize this provision in the fourth quarter of 2025 in connection with its forward purchase commitment. A provision is an accounting estimate for credit losses, not the price paid for the portfolio. Chase’s 2026 announcement
Goldman Sachs: expected $0.46 increase in fourth-quarter 2025 earnings per share Goldman attributed the expected increase to a $2.48 billion loan-loss reserve release, partly offset by a $2.26 billion reduction in net revenues related to portfolio markdowns and contract termination obligations, plus $38 million in expenses. These are Goldman’s stated accounting effects, not Chase’s provision. Goldman’s announcement

Goldman described the transition as substantially completing its narrowing of focus in consumer business. That is the bank’s stated strategic rationale, not an independent conclusion about the deal’s causes or economics. Goldman also cautioned that the forward-looking transition timing may not occur on the anticipated schedule, or at all, if closing conditions are not met. Goldman’s announcement

What has not been decided publicly

  • The final closing or transition date.
  • Whether card numbers will change or customers will need new physical cards.
  • The arrangements for Apple Card Savings after Chase becomes issuer.
  • Any post-transition changes to APRs, rewards, underwriting, customer service, eligibility, or Savings yield.

Apple says it will provide further transition details as the date approaches. Until then, these outcomes should not be assumed either way. Apple’s FAQ

Why reports still use “could take over”

The original “could” framing reflected a proposed or pending deal. Apple and Chase have since announced an agreement, so the more accurate description is that Chase is planned to take over as issuer. It is still not a completed transfer: approvals and closing conditions remain. The Associated Press also reported that customers would see no immediate changes when the agreement was announced.
