If your new mobile number is not registered with Aadhaar, Aadhaar OTPs may still be sent to your old number. That can block or complicate online tasks that rely on Aadhaar authentication, including Aadhaar-linked DigiLocker functions, eligible applicants’ Instant e-PAN applications, and EPFO UAN activation. It does not mean every bank, UPI app, PAN account, or government service will stop working: each provider may keep its own mobile-number record.
What “linked to Aadhaar” means
It means the mobile number currently recorded in UIDAI’s Aadhaar database. It is distinct from the number saved separately in a bank, DigiLocker, EPFO/UAN, tax account, or other service. Changing one record does not automatically change the others.

UIDAI says a registered mobile number is essential for Aadhaar online services, and MyAadhaar login uses an OTP sent to that number. Which services may be affected?

Why DigiLocker can still show a different number
DigiLocker has an account mobile field as well as Aadhaar-based verification. Its FAQ says an Aadhaar-linked mobile is required to link a DigiLocker account with Aadhaar. If you can access Aadhaar OTP sign-in, you can update the DigiLocker account mobile separately; changing the Aadhaar record does not itself update that account field. DigiLocker FAQ

How to fix the right record
- Identify which number the service needs. Check whether the prompt concerns your Aadhaar-registered number, the number saved in that service account, or both.
- Check the Aadhaar-registered number. Use UIDAI’s mobile verification route. If the number is outdated, follow UIDAI’s current official mobile-update instructions. UIDAI’s Aadhaar app FAQ describes app-based scenarios and directs people who cannot access the old registered number to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or authorised update centre. - Update each provider account separately. Once Aadhaar is corrected, review DigiLocker, EPFO/UAN, your bank, UPI apps, and any other service that sends OTPs or alerts to the old number. Contact the provider for its own recovery or number-change process.
- Use official recovery channels only. Do not disclose an Aadhaar number, OTP, PIN, or account credentials to an agent or in comments.
What an Aadhaar mobile mismatch does not prove
UIDAI lists many sectors where Aadhaar is used, but that broad list does not mean UIDAI maintains every institution’s contact details. A bank or other provider may use its own number record and authentication method. If its OTPs or alerts still go to your old number, contact that institution directly. EPFO’s activation instructions specifically describe Aadhaar OTP as part of UAN activation.
