The report says police registered separate cases at the Cyber Crime police station in Sector 17 and were examining mobile numbers, transaction trails and bank accounts. It does not report arrests, recovered funds, a final finding, or the outcome of any bank reimbursement claim. It also does not name the victims or a bank.
What to do if a suspicious card link leads to a loss
- Contact your bank immediately using an official channel. Use the number on the bank’s website or card, or its official app—not contact details in the suspicious message. Ask the bank to block or secure affected cards and accounts, report unauthorised transactions, and provide a complaint reference.
- Report the cyber fraud. The Government of India’s National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal lists helpline 1930 and the portal as reporting routes. Its linked instructions are titled “For Delhi Only,” so check the current local process rather than assuming that every procedural detail applies elsewhere.
- Keep the incident details. Preserve transaction information, message and link details, and communications with the bank or authorities. Do not revisit or forward a suspicious link to provide evidence.
Does reporting guarantee reimbursement?
No single outcome can be assumed from these reports. The Reserve Bank of India’s July 6, 2017 circular says banks must take immediate steps to prevent further unauthorised transactions after a customer reports them. It sets liability according to the circumstances and the timing of the report. Where a customer’s negligence includes sharing payment credentials, the circular treats losses before reporting differently from some third-party breach cases that may qualify for zero or limited liability if reported within specified periods. Read the RBI circular on customer liability and contact the bank promptly; the circular’s general rules do not determine the claims in these Chandigarh cases.
