CDC’s 2024 Warning About Done Global, Adderall Access and Telehealth Fraud

The CDC estimated that Done Global disruption could affect 30,000 to 50,000 adults in 2024, but that was not a tally of people who lost care. Here’s what the warning said, how the case later ended and what patients should do about an unfilled prescription.

In June 2024, the CDC warned that disruption involving Done Global, an online ADHD-care company, could affect 30,000 to 50,000 adults across all 50 states. That was a forecast of potential disruption—not a count of people who ultimately lost care or medication. The criminal case has since moved beyond the indictment: the Justice Department says a jury convicted the company’s founder and former clinical president in November 2025, and both received prison sentences in July 2026.

What the CDC warned about

The CDC’s June 13, 2024 Health Alert Network advisory addressed the risk that patients using Done Global or similar subscription-based telehealth services could have interruptions in ADHD treatment and care. The agency’s estimate of 30,000 to 50,000 potentially affected adults covered all 50 states. It did not establish how many patients actually lost access or experienced harm.

The alert came amid what the CDC described at the time as a shortage of several prescription stimulants, including immediate-release mixed amphetamine salts, commonly known by the brand name Adderall. That is a dated description from June 2024, not a measurement of current availability. The advisory also noted that telehealth had become a route to ADHD medication: in October and November 2023 survey responses, 30.5% of adults with current ADHD said they had used telehealth to obtain an ADHD medication since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. That national statistic provides context; it does not identify Done Global’s patient count.

The CDC cautioned that disrupted treatment could prompt some people to seek medication outside regulated health care. Counterfeit pills may resemble prescription stimulants but contain fentanyl or other unexpected substances, creating overdose risks. The agency also described risks associated with untreated ADHD, including social and emotional impairment, substance-use disorder, unintentional injury such as motor-vehicle crashes, and suicide. These are possible risks, not outcomes predicted for every person whose care is interrupted. Read the CDC advisory.

What happened in the Done Global case

The 2024 alert followed the Justice Department’s announcement of an indictment involving Done Global, a subscription telehealth company offering adult ADHD care. At the indictment stage, prosecutors alleged that the company’s practices facilitated prescriptions without a legitimate medical purpose and raised safety concerns about follow-up and refills. Those were allegations at the time, not findings a reader should treat as established before trial.

The case later resulted in convictions. The Justice Department says a jury convicted Done founder and former CEO Ruthia He and former clinical president David Brody in November 2025. In its July 7, 2026 sentencing announcement, DOJ said He was sentenced to 72 months in prison and Brody to 24 months. DOJ described the convicted scheme as unlawfully distributing more than 37 million Adderall pills and defrauding insurers of over $12 million; it also characterized it as a $90 million scheme and said He spent more than $40 million on social-media advertising. DOJ’s case page lists fines and forfeiture orders and says restitution would be determined later. These figures and case descriptions are DOJ’s, not estimates of the number of patients affected by treatment disruption. See DOJ’s sentencing announcement and case information.

What to do if you cannot fill an ADHD prescription

If a pharmacy cannot fill a prescription, the CDC’s practical advice is to contact your health-care provider and pharmacist. The alert says: “Talk with your healthcare provider and pharmacist if you cannot find a pharmacy that has your medication.” A clinician can discuss appropriate next steps, while the pharmacist can explain whether the prescription can be filled through the pharmacy or what information your prescriber may need.

  • Use medication prescribed by a licensed clinician and obtained from a licensed pharmacy.
  • Contact your prescriber and pharmacist about an unavailable prescription rather than trying to replace it through an unregulated seller.
  • Ask how follow-up and continuity of care will work if your usual telehealth service is disrupted. Useful questions include whether you can reach the care team, who handles prescription problems, and how clinical follow-up is arranged.
  • If you need a new care route, check that the clinician is licensed and the pharmacy is licensed. These checks are practical safeguards, not an endorsement of any particular provider.

Is it safe to buy Adderall online?

Buying prescription stimulants from an unlicensed seller is not a safe workaround. The CDC warned that counterfeit pills can look like prescription medication and may contain fentanyl or other unexpected substances. Obtain medication through a licensed clinician and licensed pharmacy, and ask your provider and pharmacist for help if a prescription is unavailable.

Why the case matters beyond one company

The CDC’s warning concerned continuity of care as well as medication: patients could lose access to treatment when a telehealth service was disrupted, while stimulant shortages could make replacement prescriptions harder to fill. The subsequent criminal convictions and sentences establish the outcome of the federal case, but they do not turn the CDC’s earlier potential-impact estimate into a final count of patients who lost treatment. In announcing the sentences, U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian said, “Telehealth companies prescribing controlled substances must follow medical standards, prioritize patient safety, and comply with the law, and those who do not will be held responsible.” That is DOJ’s enforcement position.

A contemporaneous account of the indictment and the CDC warning is available from Ars Technica.
