Neither business mix alone establishes which stock is the better buy. That depends on each company’s results, risks and valuation at the time you invest, as well as your portfolio and time horizon.
How Caterpillar and Deere differ
Both companies make equipment and provide financing connected to equipment sales, but they are not interchangeable industrial stocks. Their different end markets can respond to different economic conditions, so start by identifying which exposures you want.
| Company | Main reported equipment businesses | Portfolio exposure | Financing business |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) | Construction Industries; Resource Industries; and Energy & Transportation | Construction, mining and other resource activity, plus power and energy equipment | Financial Products |
| Deere & Company (NYSE: DE) | Production & Precision Agriculture; Small Agriculture & Turf; and Construction & Forestry | Agricultural equipment, turf, construction and forestry | Financial Services |
These descriptions follow each company’s FY2025 Form 10-K. Segment names and definitions differ, so similar labels do not necessarily mean that the companies have equivalent businesses. Both financing operations also connect equipment demand to customers’ ability to borrow and repay.
When CAT’s business mix may be a closer fit
CAT’s construction, resource and energy-related businesses may align more closely with an investor seeking exposure to construction activity, mining and power or energy equipment. This is an observation about the company’s operations, not a prediction of its stock return.

What the latest reported quarters show
The latest quarterly results identified here cover different periods: Caterpillar’s second quarter ended June 30, 2026, while Deere’s ended May 3, 2026. The reported changes below are year over year, but the periods are not synchronized; comparing their growth rates is not a like-for-like test of performance.

| Company and period | Sales and revenues | Profit measure | What shaped the result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caterpillar, Q2 2026; quarter ended June 30 | $20.543 billion, up 24% year over year | Operating profit of $4.295 billion, up 50% | The company attributed the increase mainly to higher sales volume. Operating profit included $392 million of expected IEEPA tariff recoveries. |
| Deere, Q2 2026; quarter ended May 3 | Net sales and revenues of $13.369 billion, up 5% year over year | Net income of $1.773 billion, down 2% | Production & Precision Agriculture was weaker, while Small Agriculture & Turf and Construction & Forestry showed growth. |
The measures in the table are each company’s reported figures, not a matched comparison of margins or earnings power. In particular, CAT’s reported operating-profit increase included the stated tariff-recovery amount, while Deere’s revenue growth coincided with lower net income. For an investment comparison, examine the full releases and filings for segment results, volume, pricing, currency, costs and unusual items rather than treating top-line growth as a verdict.
In its August 4, 2026 earnings release, Caterpillar CEO Joe Creed said the company had generated more than $20 billion in quarterly sales and revenues for the first time in its history. That is management’s description of the quarter, not an independent assessment of CAT’s prospects. Deere’s May 21, 2026 release also gave management guidance of $4.5 billion to $5.0 billion in FY2026 net income; guidance is an outlook, not a realized result.

How to compare the stocks for a portfolio
A useful comparison separates the underlying businesses from the prices investors are being asked to pay. Work through these checks using current, consistently dated information.
- Match the exposure to your thesis. Decide whether you want more agricultural-equipment exposure, or more exposure to construction, mining and power or energy equipment. Consider how those markets fit the rest of your holdings.
- Read segment results, not just consolidated growth. Use each company’s filings to see which businesses drove sales and profit. Separate volume and pricing from currency effects, input costs and unusual items such as CAT’s expected tariff recoveries reported in Q2 2026.
- Assess financing alongside equipment demand. Review Financial Products at CAT and Financial Services at Deere. Their credit quality and results can be affected by borrowers’ ability to repay and by the conditions under which customers finance equipment purchases.
- Compare capital returns and financial resilience. From the same fiscal-year filings, examine cash generation, dividends, repurchases, debt and finance-segment risks. Use the companies’ own definitions and comparable periods; don’t compare one company’s revenue with the other’s profit.
- Compare valuation on one date and a consistent basis. Check current share prices and market values on the same date, then compare measures such as price to earnings or enterprise value to operating earnings. State whether earnings are trailing or forecast, and account for where each company may be in its business cycle. Different measures can give different impressions.
- Test the fit against your own constraints. Consider your investment horizon, tolerance for cyclical swings, existing sector exposure and the possibility that demand or financing conditions weaken. Historical results and company guidance do not guarantee future returns.
Risks that affect both stocks
Both companies depend on customers’ willingness and ability to buy expensive equipment. Demand can change with construction, mining, agricultural and other capital spending, while access to financing can influence purchase decisions. Their financing businesses also mean that equipment exposure is not the whole risk picture.

The current quarters illustrate why segment mix matters. Deere’s Q2 2026 release described challenges in global agricultural markets and showed weaker Production & Precision Agriculture results alongside growth in Small Agriculture & Turf and Construction & Forestry. Caterpillar reported higher volume and favorable pricing, as well as the expected tariff-recovery effect included in operating profit. These quarter-specific conditions should not be assumed to persist.
For a fuller risk review, read the risk factors and segment disclosures in both companies’ filings. Their fiscal calendars and segment definitions differ, and their quarterly results cover different end dates. The FY2025 Form 10-Ks also show different kinds of headline figures: Caterpillar reported $67.589 billion in sales and revenues, while Deere reported $5.027 billion in net income attributable to Deere & Company, down from $7.100 billion in FY2024. Those are not comparable measures of company size or profitability.

What the available figures cannot tell you
The reported business mix and quarterly results can help identify which company’s operations better match an investment thesis; they do not settle which stock is more attractive at today’s price. A relative-valuation conclusion requires synchronized prices and comparable valuation measures, which are not established here. Without them, calling CAT or DE cheaper—or naming a universal winner—would go beyond the evidence.
