Cathay Group ordered 30 Airbus A330-900 aircraft, the largest model in the A330neo family, to renew its mid-size widebody fleet. The company said the planes would principally serve regional destinations in Asia, with flexibility for longer routes. Deliveries were expected to begin in 2028, with all aircraft expected by the end of 2031; those are announced expectations, not a current aircraft-by-aircraft schedule.
What Cathay ordered—and what it did not
The firm order is for 30 A330-900s. “A330neo” is Airbus’s name for the updated A330 family; the specific model in Cathay’s order is the A330-900. Airbus’s customer list published in April 2026, with orders counted at the end of March, still showed 30 firm orders for Cathay Pacific Group. Cathay’s 2024 announcement also described a right to acquire 30 additional aircraft in the future. That is not a second firm order, so the confirmed order remains 30 aircraft. The order is for Cathay Pacific’s passenger fleet, not Cathay Cargo.
What the aircraft are intended to do
Cathay presented the purchase as fleet renewal: the A330-900s are intended progressively to replace existing A330-300 mid-size widebodies while leaving room for growth. The stated primary role is high-capacity regional flying in Asia, with the ability to serve longer routes if needed. Cathay Group Chief Executive Officer Ronald Lam said the aircraft would “principally serve our regional destinations in Asia, while also providing the flexibility to serve longer routes as required.” That describes the company’s intended role, not a list of assigned routes. Airbus publishes a maximum range of 7,200 nautical miles (13,330 kilometres) for the A330-900 and identifies Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines. Those are manufacturer specifications; they do not guarantee a particular payload, weather-adjusted range or Cathay route performance.
When deliveries were expected
In its 7 August 2024 announcement, Cathay said deliveries were expected to start from 2028. Its transaction disclosure said it expected all aircraft to be delivered by the end of 2031. Together, these statements give an announced delivery window, not a published sequence for individual aircraft. They do not establish that deliveries have begun. What is known about the cost and payment
Cathay did not disclose the actual consideration for the aircraft, saying disclosure would affect the significant price concessions. The filing says payment is in eight instalments per aircraft: the first seven are due before delivery, with a substantial portion of the balance payable upon delivery. It says the purchase may be funded wholly or partly through commercial bank loans, finance leases, sale-and-leaseback arrangements, and/or cash generated by operations. No purchase price can be derived from those terms.
Efficiency claims need context
Cathay’s 2024 Sustainability Report says its next-generation aircraft can be up to 25% more fuel efficient than previous-generation aircraft. That is a broad company statement about its defined next-generation aircraft category; it is not an A330-900-specific saving or a measured estimate for a particular Cathay route. Airbus said in its 2024 order announcement that A330neo aircraft could operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), and stated an aim to increase capability to 100% by 2030. This is an aircraft capability claim and a manufacturer-stated target—not evidence that Cathay uses those fuel blends, that SAF is available on a particular route, or that a given location has the necessary certification and supply.

- Specific routes and aircraft allocations.
- A delivery schedule for individual aircraft.
- Cathay’s final A330-900 seat count, cabin configuration and launch date.
- The actual purchase consideration.
These details should not be inferred from the configuration of a different Cathay aircraft or from the A330-900’s published maximum range. Cathay Group Chief Executive Officer Ronald Lam described the investment as reflecting confidence in Hong Kong’s aviation hub and commitment to the city’s development; that is the company’s stated rationale, not a separate measure of the order’s financial return.
