Cash Back vs. Travel Rewards: Which Credit Card Is Better When You Spend Less?

For lower spenders, cash back is often the simpler choice—but travel rewards may win when usable perks, international savings, or realistic redemptions outweigh fees.

For most people who spend less, a no-annual-fee cash-back card is the better starting point. Its return is easier to understand and use, and it does not depend on planning a trip or finding a favorable points redemption. A travel rewards card can still come out ahead if you travel often enough to use its perks, avoid foreign transaction fees you would otherwise pay, or redeem points for enough real value to offset its fee and the cash back you give up.

The useful comparison is not the highest advertised earn rate. It is the value your actual spending can earn after fees, plus only those benefits that replace costs you would genuinely incur.

What changes when you spend less?

A reward rate applies to the dollars you actually put on the card. When annual spending is modest, the difference between reward programs may amount to relatively little, while an annual fee still has to be paid in full. A premium benefit or high theoretical point value cannot make up for a fee if you do not use it.

Cash back is usually simpler to value: a statement credit, check, or direct deposit converts rewards into a recognizable dollar amount. Travel points are more variable. Their worth depends on the card’s redemption choices, transfer partners, award availability, and the price of the trip you can actually book. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) notes that major issuers typically estimate a point at about one cent, but says point values vary by redemption option. That is a useful reference point, not a promise for every point or every redemption (CFPB issue spotlight, 2024).

There is no universal spending threshold at which a travel card becomes worthwhile. The answer depends on the specific cards, your eligible spending by category, fees, and whether you can use the travel benefits or points.

Compare the two kinds of cards on the costs you will actually face

Factor Cash-back card Travel rewards card Question to answer
Return on spending Usually expressed as cash or a cash-equivalent credit Depends on the card and the redemption you can use What will my real spending earn after the annual fee?
Annual fee Many cards have no annual fee; some category cards charge one Options range from no annual fee to premium-fee products Can I recover the fee using benefits I would otherwise pay for?
Redemption Often a statement credit, check, or direct deposit May include travel bookings, credits, or point transfers Will I redeem the rewards, and how much will that redemption save?
Travel use Rewards remain useful whether or not a trip is planned Can reward travel and may include travel-specific benefits Do I travel enough to use the rewards and perks?
International spending Some cards may charge foreign transaction fees Some cards may avoid those fees; check the card’s terms What fee would I actually pay abroad with each card?
Effort Generally simpler to track and redeem Transfers and partner award bookings can require research and flexibility Is the possible extra value worth the work?

“Travel card” does not automatically mean a premium annual fee: no-annual-fee travel cards are also an option. Current card examples and terms change, so verify fees, rewards, and conditions with the issuer before applying.

Convenience is part of the comparison, even though it may not appear as a line item on a statement. With cash back, the reward is usually easy to understand without having to plan around a future trip. Travel points can require comparing redemption options, checking whether a partner award is available, and being flexible about when or how you travel. If you would rather redeem a smaller, predictable reward than do that research, the theoretical upside of points may not be practical value for you.

Calculate your personal break-even point

Use a year of actual card-eligible spending if possible, rather than your total household budget. Include only purchases you would make anyway, and separate ongoing rewards from any one-time sign-up bonus. A bonus can affect the first-year result, but it does not establish that the card will be valuable in later years.

  1. List annual spending by category. Estimate the amount you would charge in categories such as groceries, dining, travel, and other purchases. Exclude spending that will not earn rewards under the card’s terms.
  2. Apply each card’s actual earning rules. Use the rates, category definitions, and caps for the specific cards you are comparing. If a category has a spending cap, do not apply its higher rate to spending above the cap.
  3. Estimate usable rewards. For cash back, use the redemption value you can actually receive. For travel points, use a trip or other redemption you could realistically book—not the best possible value someone might obtain in a special case.
  4. Subtract the annual fee. Count the full fee for each year you expect to keep the card. Do not treat a fee as offset merely because the card advertises credits or perks.
  5. Add only benefits that replace real spending. For example, count a checked-bag benefit only if you regularly pay for a checked bag and the benefit applies to your trip. Exclude lounge access, travel credits, or other perks you would not otherwise buy or use.
  6. Account for international fees where relevant. If you travel abroad, check the foreign transaction fee on each card and estimate it against the purchases you expect to make in foreign currency.
  7. Compare over the likely holding period. Look at the first year separately if a one-time bonus applies, then compare ongoing annual value for the period you expect to keep each card. Issuer terms and reward programs can change.

A practical way to express the comparison is:

Estimated annual net value = usable rewards + benefits that replace costs you would otherwise incur − annual fee − applicable foreign transaction fees.

This is an estimate, not a guarantee. It is most useful when both cards are assessed against the same spending and realistic behavior. If the travel card’s apparent advantage depends on changing your habits, buying more to earn points, or finding a hard-to-book award, do not treat that advantage as dependable value.

Keep the comparison apples to apples

Use the same spending totals for each candidate card, then follow each card’s own rules. A headline earn rate is not necessarily the rate you will receive on all purchases: category definitions and caps can affect how much qualifies. If your spending is spread across categories, a card with a strong rate in one category may not produce the best total return for your own mix.

For points, estimate value from a redemption you would actually choose. The CFPB describes points as usable in a range of ways, including cash back such as statement credits or direct deposits, transfers to co-brand or merchant partners, and other goods or services. Its Circular 2024-07 gives examples such as miles, merchant-specific gift cards, merchandise, charitable donations, and applying rewards to purchases at checkout. Different redemption choices can produce different practical value, so do not assume that a point balance has one fixed cash value (CFPB Circular 2024-07).

If you are considering a transfer, compare the number of points required for a specific usable booking with what you would otherwise pay for that trip. Then ask whether you would take the trip at that price and on those dates without the points. A redemption that looks valuable in isolation is less compelling if it requires a trip you did not want or dates you cannot use. That is why a plausible redemption is a better input than an advertised or aspirational maximum.

Likewise, be conservative when assigning a dollar value to benefits. A credit is not a savings if you would not have made the purchase without it. A checked-bag benefit can matter if it replaces a bag fee you regularly pay and the benefit applies to your travel; it does not have the same value to someone who does not check bags. The same test applies to any other perk: count it only to the extent it displaces a cost you otherwise incur.

How much do you need to spend for a travel card to be worth it?

One widely cited threshold is historical, not a current rule. In a 2015 analysis, NerdWallet estimated that domestic travelers spending less than $8,600 per year on travel would earn more overall with a cash-back card under the study’s five-year model. The analysis used historical offers and spending inputs, so its result should not be applied as a present-day cutoff for an individual (NerdWallet analysis).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In the same analysis, a traveler with average annual travel spending of $3,127 was estimated to receive $20.15 more in annual rewards over five years with cash back than with a travel card. The study also estimated annual travel-spending thresholds of $13,300 for seven-year ownership and $16,700 for ten-year ownership to justify a travel card. Each figure is an output of that 2015 model, not a current break-even point or a forecast for your card choices.

The analysis illustrates why the holding period matters: a one-time bonus has a different effect when spread over five years than when the card is kept for only a short time. It does not establish what today’s cards will earn. To make a current decision, use current issuer terms and your own spending in the calculation above.

Read these numbers as an example of a method, not as a spending target. They came from a particular set of historical card offers, assumptions, and spending inputs. A threshold built from those inputs cannot answer whether a different card, a different mix of purchases, or a different kind of trip will be worthwhile for you today. The useful question is not simply “Do I spend more than $8,600 on travel?” but “After fees, what does each card return on the spending I really expect to put on it, and can I use its rewards and benefits?”

That distinction also explains why published comparisons can disagree with your own result. A model can include sign-up bonuses and quantifiable benefits, and its conclusion depends on how long the card is held and what spending assumptions are used. Your calculation should separate a first-year bonus from ongoing rewards, and should not include benefits you would not use. Since offers and terms change, check current issuer information rather than treating an older study as an up-to-date recommendation.

When travel rewards can make sense for a lower spender

You will use a travel benefit that replaces a real cost

A checked-bag benefit or another travel perk can change the math even when everyday spending is low. Count it only when it saves you from paying a cost you would otherwise incur, and check eligibility and restrictions for the trips you take. A benefit that sounds valuable but does not fit your travel pattern is not a financial offset.

For this reason, travel frequency alone is not enough. Ask whether you actually pay for the specific service a card benefit covers, and whether the benefit applies to the way you book and travel. If the perk does not replace an expense in your budget, it cannot reliably make up for a fee or lower rewards elsewhere. Keep the benefit calculation grounded in past behavior or a realistic plan, not in the card’s list of possible amenities.

You travel internationally and can avoid fees

Some cards charge foreign transaction fees and some do not. If you make purchases abroad, compare the fee terms of the actual cards rather than assuming that a card earns travel rewards or has a particular fee structure. International use can shift the comparison, but the result depends on the cards and the amount you spend abroad.

Estimate this only for purchases you expect to make in foreign currency and use the issuer’s current fee terms. A no-foreign-transaction-fee feature may be useful, but it does not automatically make a card the better overall choice; compare it with the rewards you would earn and any annual fee. Conversely, if you do not expect international purchases, that feature may have no value in your calculation.

You can book a useful points redemption

Transfers to airline or hotel partners can sometimes yield more value than a simple redemption, but that value is not automatic. You need to find an award you can use, confirm availability for your dates, and compare the points required with the cash price you would otherwise pay. A historical NerdWallet example notes that booking prices had changed, a reminder that a past redemption example is not a fixed valuation (NerdWallet guide).

The extra value, when available, comes with a practical trade-off: research and flexibility. If you do not want to search transfer partners or adjust travel plans around award availability, the simpler redemption may suit you better even if it produces less value on paper. Consider the work required as part of the decision, particularly if the expected advantage over cash back is small.

A no-fee travel card fits better than a premium card

If you want travel rewards but do not expect to use enough benefits to justify a fee, include no-annual-fee travel cards in the comparison. A lower fee makes the break-even hurdle smaller, but it does not guarantee better value than cash back. Compare actual earning rules and the redemptions you can make.

Do not assume that every travel card is built around the same trade-off. The category includes options from no-fee to premium-fee products, and the card’s own rates, fees, terms, and redemption choices matter. Current examples can help identify candidates, but a guide or past comparison is not a substitute for checking the issuer’s current offer before you apply.

Why cash back is often the practical default

For a lower spender who does not travel regularly, cash back usually wins on certainty and convenience. You can assess its return without estimating the value of a future trip, searching award calendars, or transferring points. Many cash-back cards have no annual fee, which also avoids having to earn back a fixed cost before rewards produce net value.

That does not mean every cash-back card is automatically a good choice. Some category cards charge fees or have caps, and their value depends on whether your spending matches their rules. The same annual-spending calculation applies: estimate the rewards from eligible purchases, account for caps, then subtract the fee.

Cash back also keeps the decision flexible if your travel plans change. If you are unsure whether you will travel, or do not yet know which rewards you can use, a clear cash redemption is easier to compare with a known annual fee. That simplicity can be especially important when the rewards difference between two cards is modest: a benefit that is difficult to redeem or a fee that is hard to offset can erase a small theoretical edge.

Rewards should not outweigh interest and program risk

Rewards are not a reason to carry a balance or spend more than planned. The CFPB warns that consumers who carry revolving balances may pay more in interest and fees than they receive in rewards. If you expect to pay interest, compare the cost of borrowing before giving reward rates much weight (CFPB issue spotlight).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reward value and access can also change. The CFPB’s 2024 circular explains that points may be redeemed as cash back, transferred to co-brand or merchant partners, or used for goods and services. It also identifies concerns about rewards being “devalued or denied even after program terms are met”; that wording appears in the CFPB’s report summary and describes consumer reports, not a claim that every program will do so (CFPB Circular 2024-07; CFPB report summary).

  • Comfortable Non-Slip Grip:The ergonomic pen barrel has a soft rubberized coating for a comfortable, non-slip grip, so you won't get fatigued even after long hours of writing.

These cautions reinforce the basic rule: do not spend extra or borrow to earn rewards. A reward program is valuable only insofar as it returns something on purchases you already planned and can pay for. The CFPB’s observations do not mean every cardholder will lose rewards, but they are a reason to understand the terms and avoid treating a points balance as guaranteed cash.

Before applying, read the current terms for fees, eligibility, earning caps, redemption restrictions, and program changes. Treat rewards as a secondary benefit of spending you already planned—not as a reason to borrow or buy more.

A quick decision checklist

  • Choose cash back as your starting comparison if you spend modestly, want simple redemptions, or do not have a clear plan to use travel perks.
  • Consider a travel card if its usable benefits and realistic point redemptions outweigh its fee and the cash-back value you would otherwise receive.
  • Compare cards using your own annual spending, category caps, likely holding period, and applicable international fees.
  • Exclude advertised perks you would not use and point values that depend on an award you cannot reliably book.
  • Do not pursue rewards if doing so would lead you to spend extra or carry a balance.

NerdWallet’s guide was updated September 29, 2026, but card fees, rewards, and offers can still change. Use current issuer disclosures for the cards on your shortlist. Historical break-even figures and past redemption examples are useful context, not guarantees about a current application or future trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which credit card is better when you spend less: cash back or travel rewards?

Cash back is usually the better starting point for a lower spender because it is easier to value and redeem, and many cash-back cards have no annual fee. A travel card can be better if you can use its perks, avoid fees you would otherwise pay, or make a realistic points redemption worth more than the cash-back alternative after fees.

How much do I need to spend for a travel card to be worth it?

There is no universal current threshold. Your break-even point depends on eligible spending, category rates and caps, annual fees, the redemption you can actually use, and benefits that replace real costs. NerdWallet’s 2015 study estimated historical thresholds under its own assumptions; those figures are not current rules for individual cardholders.

Are credit card points worth one cent each?

The CFPB says major issuers typically estimate a point at about one cent, but point value varies by redemption option. Use the value of a redemption you can realistically make rather than assuming every point is worth a fixed amount.

Should I count a travel card’s credits and perks when comparing annual fees?

Count a benefit only if it replaces a cost you would otherwise incur and applies to your travel. A checked-bag benefit may matter if you regularly pay for checked bags, for example; a perk you would not use should not be treated as an offset to the annual fee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a no-annual-fee travel card be better than cash back?

It can be a worthwhile comparison option, since travel cards range from no-fee to premium-fee products. A lower fee reduces the amount you need to offset, but the result still depends on the card’s earning rules and the value of rewards you can actually redeem.

Do travel rewards make sense if I carry a credit card balance?

Rewards generally should not drive the decision if you carry a revolving balance. The CFPB warns that interest and fees can exceed the rewards received. Avoid spending extra or carrying debt to earn points.

The Bottom Line

For most people who spend less, start with a no-annual-fee cash-back card. Choose travel rewards only when a realistic calculation—using your spending, current fees, usable redemptions, and benefits that replace expenses—shows that they beat the cash-back alternative. Do not count aspirational point values or perks you would not use, and never let rewards justify extra spending or a carried balance.
