Former Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison was sentenced to 24 months in prison on September 24, 2024, by U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan. Contemporary reports also said she was ordered to forfeit approximately $11 billion. That figure describes a reported forfeiture order—not Ellison’s personal wealth or a claim that she paid $11 billion immediately.
What sentence did Caroline Ellison receive?
Judge Kaplan sentenced Ellison to two years, or 24 months, in prison in the Southern District of New York on September 24, 2024. The Associated Press reported that the judge credited her guilty plea and extensive cooperation, including her testimony, while concluding that incarceration was warranted given the seriousness of the conduct. The Associated Press’s sentencing report described Kaplan’s assessment of her cooperation as “very, very substantial” and “remarkable.”
What does the reported $11 billion forfeiture mean?
The Guardian and The Irish Times reported that the court ordered Ellison to forfeit approximately $11 billion. The Guardian’s coverage and The Irish Times’ report describe the amount as forfeiture. It should not be read as Ellison’s net worth, money she necessarily held personally, or proof that the full amount was paid immediately.
A copy of the forfeiture order hosted by vLex describes obligations tied to proceeds and property involved in specified offenses, and notes a separate agreement to liquidate and transfer proceeds from a Vanguard account, subject to a capital-gains-tax deduction. Because this copy is hosted by vLex rather than an official court domain, its detailed legal language should be understood with that provenance in mind. Read the order copy hosted by vLex.

Why did she receive prison time despite cooperating?
Ellison’s cooperation helped her at sentencing, but did not erase the seriousness of her role. According to the AP, Kaplan recognized her substantial assistance to the government and still found that a prison sentence was appropriate given the gravity of her participation in the fraud. Praise for cooperation is not a finding that her role was minor.
What was Ellison’s role in the FTX case?
The U.S. Department of Justice identified Ellison as Alameda Research’s former CEO. In December 2022, it announced that she had pleaded guilty to seven charges arising from schemes to defraud FTX customers and investors and was cooperating with the government. The DOJ announcement sets out the plea and charges.

Ellison later became a key government witness at Sam Bankman-Fried’s trial. Separately, the SEC’s litigation release summarized allegations that FTX had represented itself as a safe crypto-asset platform with controls to protect customer assets, while Alameda was presented as an ordinary customer without special privileges. Those are allegations described in the SEC matter, not findings made in Ellison’s sentencing. The SEC’s release explains the allegations.
In a September 17, 2024 sentencing memorandum, prosecutors said FTX had a negative $11 billion balance and that $13 billion in customer funds had been borrowed. Those are figures stated by prosecutors in a sentencing filing, not independent audit findings. The government’s sentencing memorandum provides that account.

How does Ellison’s outcome differ from Bankman-Fried’s?
The two defendants received separate sentences and forfeiture orders. The DOJ reported that Bankman-Fried was sentenced in March 2024 to 25 years in prison and ordered to forfeit $11 billion. That is a separate outcome from Ellison’s 24-month sentence and reported forfeiture order. The DOJ’s Bankman-Fried sentencing announcement covers his case.
