The Whole Foods Market at Broadway and Madison in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood closed on June 16, 2025, seven years after opening. The company did not give a store-specific reason beyond saying it regularly evaluates store performance and growth potential. In August 2025, the building’s owners said Whole Foods still had a long-term lease and could resume operations, but that was not an announcement that the store would reopen. The storefront’s status as of October 8, 2026, is not confirmed by the cited reporting.
When did the Capitol Hill Whole Foods close?
GeekWire reported that the two-level, 40,000-square-foot store closed Monday, June 16, 2025. It had opened in October 2018 at the base of The Danforth, a 17-story apartment building at Broadway and Madison. Capitol Hill Seattle Blog had earlier reported June 20 as the planned final day of business; GeekWire’s later report gives June 16 as the closure date. GeekWire’s June 16, 2025 report and Capitol Hill Seattle Blog’s June 14 report provide the dated accounts.

Amazon acquired Whole Foods for $13.7 billion in 2017, about a year before this location opened, according to GeekWire.
Why did Whole Foods close the store?
Whole Foods did not publicly identify a specific cause for the Capitol Hill closure. A spokesperson told GeekWire: “Like any business, we regularly evaluate the performance and growth potential of each of our stores and make decisions to position the company for long-term success.” That is the company’s general explanation; the reporting does not establish that sales, rent, theft, crime, or neighborhood conditions caused the decision.

The closure came more than a year after a separate grocery closure nearby: Amazon Fresh at 610 E. Pike Street closed in April 2024. That was a different store and should not be conflated with the Whole Foods decision. GeekWire reported on the Amazon Fresh closure, as did Capitol Hill Seattle Blog.
What happened to employees?
Whole Foods said affected team members could transfer to roles at four other Seattle-area stores. At the time, the company also said new stores remained important to its growth strategy and that more than 100 were in its pipeline. That pipeline figure was a company statement reported in 2025, not a current count. GeekWire’s closure coverage reported the staffing and growth statements.

Could Whole Foods reopen at The Danforth?
In an August 2025 follow-up, Capitol Hill Seattle Blog reported that The Danforth’s new owners said Whole Foods had 13 years remaining on its lease and was paying rent. A filing quoted in the report said, “At any time, Whole Foods can resume normal operations under the lease agreement.” This described lease rights at that time; it did not say Whole Foods planned to reopen.
The owners were preparing for the possibility of a long-term vacancy and planned window coverings. The same report cautioned that plywood coverings did not mean a replacement supermarket was being prepared. These are August 2025 details, not confirmation of the premises’ current use. What grocery options were reported near Broadway and Madison?
At the time of the June 2025 closure, GeekWire identified Harvard Market QFC at Broadway and Pike as the closest Whole Foods alternative. Capitol Hill Seattle Blog also named M2M, Trader Joe’s, and Central Co-op among neighborhood grocery options. Those reports do not establish current hours, measured walking distances, or delivery availability, so check each store’s current details before making a trip. GeekWire and Capitol Hill Seattle Blog reported the options around the closure.

On October 28, 2025, Seattle City Council announced approval of an emergency interim land-use measure responding to several closures, including the Capitol Hill Whole Foods. The city said the measure barred certain negative use restrictions that could prevent grocery-store or pharmacy use at a property for one year while work on permanent legislation proceeded. The ordinance text includes exceptions. Council President Sara Nelson said, “We have a duty to prevent the spread of food deserts throughout our city.”
