If you mean the 2025 federal individual income tax return, the ordinary extension deadline has already passed: most calendar-year filers had to request an extension by April 15, 2026. A timely request gives until October 15, 2026 to file, but as of October 8, 2026, you cannot newly request that ordinary extension. If you missed the filing deadline, file as soon as you can and check the IRS guidance for your situation.
Can you still file a free extension today?
For most people filing a 2025 federal return on a calendar-year basis, no. The IRS set April 15, 2026, as the original due date, and an extension request had to be made by then. A timely extension moves the filing deadline to October 15, 2026; it does not let you request the extension after the original deadline. See the IRS pages on requesting an extension and when to file.
If you already filed a valid extension, use the remaining time to submit your return by October 15. If you did not, file as soon as possible rather than waiting for a late extension request to fix the missed deadline. Special rules may change the answer for some taxpayers, including certain people living and working abroad, people serving in combat zones, and taxpayers covered by disaster relief.
How a timely extension could have been requested
For future reference, or if a different deadline applies to you, the IRS offers several ways to request a federal individual extension. The ordinary request is automatic when properly made by the original due date; you do not choose how long the extension lasts.

An extension gives you time to file, not time to pay
You remain responsible for paying any tax due by the original deadline, even if you receive an extension to file. Estimate your total tax, subtract withholding and payments already made, and pay as much of the remaining balance as you can by the due date. A partial payment reduces the unpaid amount but does not extend the payment deadline. The IRS put it plainly in its April 14, 2026 release: “An extension provides extra time to file, not additional time to pay.”
Under the general figures in the IRS 2025 Form 4868 instructions, the late-payment penalty is generally 0.5% of unpaid tax for each month or part of a month, up to 25%. The late-filing penalty is generally 5% of the amount due for each month or part of a month. These are not estimates of what any particular taxpayer owes: the instructions describe qualifications and exceptions, including reasonable cause. Interest may also apply to unpaid balances.

Check whether a special deadline applies
Some U.S. citizens and residents living and working abroad on the original due date generally receive an automatic two-month filing extension without filing Form 4868. Interest may still apply to tax paid after the original due date. Combat-zone service, federally declared disasters, and other IRS-designated circumstances can also affect deadlines, depending on the taxpayer’s facts and applicable notices. Review the IRS Extensions FAQ and relevant IRS notices rather than assuming the standard date applies.
