Canoo later filed for Chapter 7 liquidation on January 17, 2025.
What Canoo’s “mandatory unpaid break” meant
In an employee email dated December 20, Canoo instructed the remaining staff to begin an unpaid break on Monday, December 23. EV reported the email on December 22 and said it had seen the message. The email described the break as expected to last “a few weeks.” It did not state how many employees were affected.
The email said employees would remain employees during the break and their currently elected 2024 benefits would continue through December. It also barred work and said access to Canoo systems would be suspended. The email closed: “Please take this time to have a restful and enjoyable holiday season with your family.” That wording was reported from the employee email, not from a company filing. How the December break differed from Canoo’s furloughs
The break for remaining employees was a separate action from two factory furlough announcements. The dates, affected groups and reported durations should not be conflated:

The 23% figure and 12-week period refer to the earlier Oklahoma City factory furlough, not the December break. Canoo announced the 82 furloughs and factory idling on December 18 while it sought capital for operations. Its statement that it was in advanced discussions with capital sources was the company’s own description, not confirmation that funding had been secured. Canoo’s December 18 release said, “We regret having to furlough our employees, especially during the holidays, but we have no choice at this point. We are hopeful that we will be able to bring them back to work soon.” That was a statement of hope at the time, not evidence that employees returned.

On January 17, 2025, Canoo and certain subsidiaries filed for Chapter 7 liquidation in Delaware. Canoo’s SEC filing says a trustee would assume control and the debtors’ assets would be liquidated. The filing marked a shift from the temporary measures announced in December to a formal liquidation process. It does not establish whether individual employees later recovered wages or benefits.
