The announcement set out a planned Riyadh Season schedule, while contemporaneous reporting said a possible Canelo–Jake Paul bout was a separate discussion—and that Álvarez’s expected May return would not be against Paul. The sources reviewed do not establish that a Canelo–Paul contract was signed or that Netflix had agreed to stream that matchup.
Did Canelo Alvarez sign a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season?
Yes. On February 7, 2025, Turki Alalshikh announced an agreement for four Álvarez fights with Riyadh Season. The Ring and BBC Sport both reported the deal. The Ring’s announcement-day report described the expected schedule; BBC Sport’s report also confirmed the agreement and noted separate discussions involving Jake Paul.
The Ring quoted Alalshikh’s announcement: “Don’t mess with the lion … 4 fights for Canelo with Riyadh Season … The Deal is done … A Lion doesn’t lose sleep over opinion of a sheep… Fear the lion not the jungle,”
What the announced schedule called for
These were the plans reported when the agreement was announced, not proof that every fight ultimately happened on the original date or as originally described.

| Planned timing | Plan reported on February 7, 2025 | Location in the announcement report |
|---|---|---|
| May 2025 | Álvarez’s Riyadh debut; opponent not named in the cited schedule | Riyadh |
| September 2025 | Terence Crawford | Las Vegas |
| February 2026 | Another major fight; opponent not named | Riyadh |
| October 2026 | Fourth fight; opponent not named | Riyadh |
Was Canelo supposed to fight Jake Paul?
A possible bout was widely reported, but that is different from a signed fight. BBC Sport said Álvarez was understood to have been in conversations about a separate May fight with Paul before further discussions with Alalshikh. The Ring’s February 7 report then said: “The Ring has learned that Canelo’s May return will NOT come against social media influencer Jake Paul – as widely reported in the media.”
That reporting supports a distinction between the Riyadh Season agreement and the reported Paul possibility. It does not establish that a finalized Canelo–Paul fight contract existed. “Snubs” therefore overstates what the sources establish: the confirmed news was the four-fight deal and the report that Paul would not be Álvarez’s May opponent.

Was a Canelo vs. Jake Paul fight going to be on Netflix?
The reviewed sources do not establish that Netflix contracted to stream a Canelo–Paul fight. Netflix’s involvement in another Paul event may be a source of confusion: Netflix announced Paul vs. Mike Tyson for July 20, 2024, with Most Valuable Promotions. That was a separate event, not evidence of a Canelo–Paul booking.
Netflix did later stream a Canelo fight: its Canelo Álvarez vs. Terence Crawford media page identifies the September 2025 bout as a Riyadh Season collaboration and says it streamed globally on Netflix. The fight took place, and Netflix’s page links to its report that Crawford defeated Álvarez. That later broadcast should not be confused with the unconfirmed Paul possibility.

Who did Canelo fight instead?
The planned September 2025 opponent, Terence Crawford, is the later opponent in the announcement schedule confirmed by Netflix’s event page. The sources establish that the Canelo–Crawford fight took place in September 2025 and that Crawford won; they do not establish that Crawford was a replacement for Paul. The May plan and the reported Paul conversations were separate from the September Crawford bout.
A Saudi Press Agency search result dated May 23, 2026 reported a Canelo–Christian Mbilli bout scheduled for Riyadh on September 12, 2026. The opened page did not provide readable text confirming an outcome, so the schedule item does not establish that the bout occurred or that the original four-fight plan was completed.
