Reports put Canelo Alvarez’s compensation for choosing Jaime Munguía as his opponent at about $35 million. Munguía’s exact payout was not disclosed in the contemporaneous reports reviewed. Neither figure should be mistaken for an official purse confirmed by Nevada’s commission: its results sheet records the fight and outcome but lists no fighter pay.
What was Canelo Alvarez’s reported payout?
El Financiero reported on May 4, 2024, that boxing journalist Dan Rafael said Alvarez’s agreement with Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) called for $35 million if he selected Munguía as his opponent. AS USA described Alvarez as receiving about $35 million under a one-fight PBC contract. The careful way to state the figure is about $35 million, as reported—not an officially verified amount paid. El Financiero and AS USA reported the figure; the commission record does not confirm it.
How much did Jaime Munguía earn?
The exact amount was not stated in the contemporaneous reports. El Financiero and AS USA both described Munguía’s payout as undisclosed. El Financiero reported that promoter Oscar De La Hoya called it the biggest purse of Munguía’s career, but gave no number. “Career-best” is a description, not enough information to calculate a payout, so there is no reliable figure to put beside Alvarez’s reported $35 million.
AS USA also attributed this comment about the purse to Munguía: “Obviamente, sin duda, es la mejor bolsa, pero gracias a Dios lo he hecho muy bien y no me sorprende, no me impresiona.” In English: “Obviously, without a doubt, it’s the best purse, but thank God I’ve done very well and it doesn’t surprise me, it doesn’t impress me.” AS USA is the source for the quotation; the original interview transcript was not independently reviewed.

Were the fighters’ purses officially disclosed?
No purse amounts appear on the Nevada State Athletic Commission’s official May 4, 2024 results sheet. That document confirms the bout and its outcome, but it is not evidence for either fighter’s pay. The available reporting supports a reported agreement figure for Alvarez and an undisclosed amount for Munguía—not a commission-confirmed purse comparison. It also does not establish either fighter’s total earnings from all possible compensation components.
