Reports citing Google Trends said the worldwide search query “cancel Xbox Game Pass” reached a relative-interest score of 100 during the backlash. That was widely treated as evidence of consumer anger, but it was not a Microsoft report of subscriber losses.
Contemporary reporting linked the search surge to the price announcement, while other coverage described users encountering problems with cancellation pages.

What a Google Trends score of 100 actually means
Google Trends uses an indexed scale for relative search interest. A score of 100 represents the highest search interest for the selected term, location, category, and comparison period. It does not mean:
- 100 searches;
- 100% of Game Pass subscribers;
- 100% of searchers canceled; or
- a specific number of subscriptions lost.
People may search for cancellation instructions without completing the process. They may also be checking a price, considering a downgrade, looking for a refund, or reacting to news. Unless Microsoft publishes independently verifiable churn data, it is not accurate to say that millions of subscribers canceled based on the search spike alone.
The most defensible description is that searches for “cancel Xbox Game Pass” reportedly reached a peak relative-interest score of 100 worldwide during the October 2025 backlash. The precise result depends on the Google Trends settings used.

Did the Xbox cancellation website crash?
Users reportedly encountered errors, refresh loops, blank pages, or difficulty reaching Microsoft’s account-management tools. Some outlets described the pages as overloaded by people trying to cancel.

However, the available reporting did not establish that mass cancellations caused a confirmed Microsoft outage. A technical problem, unusually high traffic, or both could have contributed. A Microsoft Q&A report illustrates that individual users can experience management-page loops, but it is not evidence of a systemwide crash.
A careful summary is: users reported apparent strain and errors on subscription-management pages, but Microsoft did not establish that cancellations caused an outage.
What changed in 2026?
The original $29.99 price-hike story is no longer the complete picture. In an April 21, 2026 announcement, Xbox listed these updated U.S. monthly prices:

The April 2026 update also changed a major benefit: future Call of Duty games would no longer arrive in Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass at launch. Xbox said those titles would arrive around the following holiday season, approximately a year later. Existing Call of Duty titles already in the library would remain available under the stated terms.
That price reduction does not erase the 2025 backlash. Subscribers who canceled may not have returned, and the lower price came with a change to a benefit that mattered especially to Call of Duty players.
How to cancel Xbox Game Pass
Use Microsoft’s official subscription-management page:

- Sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the Game Pass subscription.
- Find the relevant Xbox Game Pass plan.
- Select Manage.
- Choose the cancellation or recurring-billing option displayed.
- Complete the confirmation prompts.
- Save a screenshot or other record of the confirmation and displayed end date.
- Check that recurring billing is off if you want access to continue through the period you already paid for.
The exact buttons can differ by plan, region, account status, platform, and Microsoft’s current interface. If the subscription was purchased through a third-party billing provider, such as a console marketplace, carrier, bundle, or other platform, you may need to cancel through that provider instead.

Canceling versus turning off recurring billing
Turning off recurring billing generally prevents the next renewal while allowing access to continue until the paid period ends. A full cancellation or refund request may have different consequences, so read the confirmation screen carefully.
If Microsoft charged you for recurring billing despite your intention to turn it off, Xbox says you may be eligible for a refund of the most recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days after payment. Eligibility is subject to Microsoft’s terms and account review, and Xbox says this refund provision is limited to one time per Microsoft account, per subscription product. Do not assume a refund is guaranteed.
What happens to your games after cancellation?
Game Pass games are licensed through the subscription; downloading one does not make it permanently yours. According to Xbox’s current subscription information, access generally continues until the membership expires or a particular game leaves the catalog, subject to the plan and account terms.

- Downloaded Game Pass titles: Access normally ends when the subscription ends or the game leaves the library.
- Purchased games: Games bought separately remain owned independently of Game Pass.
- Online multiplayer: Availability depends on the plan and the game’s requirements.
- DLC and add-ons: These may require the underlying Game Pass game entitlement and may not remain usable if you lose access to the base game.
- Cloud saves and progress: They generally remain associated with your account, but uninterrupted access across every title and platform should not be assumed.
Before canceling, check whether you are close to finishing a game, whether it is scheduled to leave the catalog, and whether buying it outright would cost less than another month of subscription.

Should you cancel, downgrade, or keep Game Pass?
The right choice depends on what you actually use—not the total retail value of every game in the catalog.
Cancel if:
- You mainly subscribed for one or two games that you no longer play.
- The monthly charge exceeds the value you get from your actual playtime.
- Your household already pays for overlapping gaming or entertainment services.
- You do not use cloud gaming, day-one releases, online console multiplayer, or plan-specific perks.
- You are unwilling to pay for future Call of Duty releases separately or wait for their later Game Pass availability.
Consider staying on Ultimate if:
- You regularly use Xbox console, PC, and cloud access.
- Several people in your household use the subscription’s benefits.
- You would otherwise buy several new releases each year.
- Online multiplayer and other included benefits have recurring value for you.
- You frequently play day-one releases other than future Call of Duty titles.
Consider a lower tier if:
- You want a smaller library or online multiplayer without the full Ultimate bundle.
- PC gaming is your main use case.
- You do not need cloud gaming, premium perks, or broad day-one access.
Microsoft’s plan names and benefits have changed over time. Rather than relying on an old comparison chart, review the live plan comparison. Xbox currently says plans start at $9.99 per month in the United States, but features, games, availability, and prices vary by region, platform, plan, and time.
If the cancellation page does not work
Try these steps before assuming the subscription cannot be canceled:
- Use a desktop browser instead of the console interface.
- Sign out and back in with the purchasing Microsoft account.
- Try a private browsing window or temporarily disable browser extensions.
- Confirm who is billing you: Microsoft, Xbox, a console marketplace, a carrier, or another provider.
- Retry later if the services page appears to be experiencing a temporary problem.
- Contact Xbox Support and keep screenshots showing errors, renewal dates, and charges.
Do not dispute a valid charge with your bank as the first step. Use Microsoft’s cancellation and refund process first, because a payment dispute can create additional account or payment complications.
The financial takeaway
The 2025 backlash was real, and reports citing Google Trends showed unusually high interest in canceling Game Pass. But search activity measures attention and intent—not completed cancellations. There is no verified cancellation total in the available reporting.
For current subscribers, the relevant facts are now different: Xbox announced lower U.S. prices for Ultimate and PC Game Pass in April 2026, while future Call of Duty games lost day-one Game Pass access. Check your actual renewal price and the benefits you use, then choose among canceling, turning off recurring billing, downgrading, or staying. The most reliable financial test is simple: compare the subscription’s monthly cost with the games and features you would genuinely purchase or use without it.
