The market includes AT&T, T-Mobile US, and Verizon; regional operators such as GCI and C Spire; carrier-owned prepaid brands such as Cricket and Visible; cable-company providers such as Xfinity Mobile and Spectrum Mobile; and dozens of independent MVNOs.
This guide defines the market by company, brand, and underlying network so you do not mistake several retail brands for separate nationwide networks. Ownership, plan terms, coverage, and network arrangements change frequently, so verify details directly with the provider before switching.

CTIA says the U.S. has nearly 100 mobile providers, resellers, and MVNOs. That is an industry-wide estimate rather than a definitive list of every active retail brand. CTIA’s wireless-industry overview and the FCC Communications Marketplace Report describe the market in these broader categories.
What counts as an American mobile company?
“American mobile company” can mean a U.S.-based operator, a company selling service in the United States, or an American-owned business. Those are not identical descriptions. For practical purposes, this list covers consumer-facing companies and brands that sell mobile voice, text, or cellular data service in the U.S.
Facilities-based carrier or MNO
A mobile network operator (MNO) owns or operates substantial wireless infrastructure, spectrum, radios, core-network facilities, or related network assets. An MNO may be nationwide or regional. Owning network infrastructure does not automatically mean a company offers coverage in every state.

A mobile virtual network operator generally buys wholesale access from one or more facilities-based carriers and sells service under its own name. MVNOs can differ from their host networks in data priority, roaming, hotspot limits, international service, device financing, customer support, and promotions.
Reseller
A reseller markets wireless service but may have less control over provisioning, billing, or network operations. “MVNO” and “reseller” are often used together in consumer coverage, although they are not always identical legal or operational categories.
Brand versus parent company
A retail brand may be a separate customer-facing business without being an independent network operator. For example, Cricket is an AT&T-owned prepaid brand, while Metro by T-Mobile is associated with T-Mobile US. Counting every brand as a separate network makes the U.S. market look more competitive—and more confusing—than it is.

The three nationwide network operators
AT&T
Type: Nationwide facilities-based carrier.
Consumer brands and related services: AT&T Wireless, AT&T Prepaid, and Cricket Wireless.
AT&T offers postpaid, prepaid, family, business, connected-device, and specialized wireless services. Cricket is a major AT&T-owned consumer brand and generally uses AT&T’s network; it should not be counted as an independent nationwide network equivalent to AT&T.

Consumer brands and related services: T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, Mint Mobile, Ultra Mobile, and selected Assurance Wireless arrangements.
T-Mobile serves postpaid, prepaid, business, home-internet, connected-device, and international customers. Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile should be treated as brands associated with T-Mobile rather than wholly independent network operators. T-Mobile’s own materials identify T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile, and Mint as flagship brands.

Verizon provides postpaid, prepaid, family, business, connected-device, and fixed-wireless services. Verizon’s acquisition of Tracfone changed the ownership structure of several well-known prepaid brands. Tracfone, Straight Talk, Total Wireless, Simple Mobile, and related brands should not be presented as unrelated nationwide network competitors.

Other nationwide or hybrid wireless operators
Dish Network/EchoStar and Boost Mobile
Boost Mobile is associated with Dish/EchoStar’s wireless business. Its position is more complicated than that of a conventional MVNO: the business combines owned network facilities with wholesale access and partner networks. It is therefore best described as a hybrid wireless operator and retail brand, not simply as a conventional reseller or as a fully equivalent fourth nationwide carrier.

Regional and rural U.S. mobile carriers
A regional carrier may provide better service in a particular town, state, or rural corridor than a national brand. It may also offer roaming outside its home footprint. Roaming does not make a regional operator a nationwide facilities-based carrier.
| Company | Primary footprint or focus | Type |
|---|---|---|
| UScellular | Regional and rural U.S. markets | Facilities-based regional operator |
| C Spire | Mississippi and surrounding southeastern markets | Regional wireless provider |
| GCI | Alaska | Regional facilities-based provider |
| Viaero Wireless | Rural Great Plains and surrounding states | Regional carrier |
| Carolina West Wireless | Parts of North Carolina and nearby areas | Regional carrier |
| Appalachian Wireless | Eastern Kentucky and nearby rural areas | Regional carrier |
| Cellcom | Wisconsin and surrounding Upper Midwest markets | Regional carrier |
Other smaller or local operators include Nemont, Pioneer Cellular, Thumb Cellular, Southern Linc, East Kentucky Network, James Valley Wireless, NorthwestCell, Pine Belt Wireless, and United Wireless. Their retail status, ownership, coverage, and network arrangements can change, so treat them as examples of the regional tier rather than a permanent exhaustive list.

Major independent and primarily independent MVNOs
The following companies sell recognizable U.S. mobile service but generally do not operate a nationwide facilities-based network comparable to AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon:
- Consumer Cellular: Consumer-focused service with an emphasis on support and simpler plans.
- Google Fi Wireless: Google’s MVNO, known for international features, eSIM support, and flexible plan structures.
- US Mobile: A multi-network provider that may appeal to customers who want network flexibility; current switching rules and plan eligibility must be checked.
- Tello: Customizable, lower-cost plans.
- Red Pocket Mobile: Prepaid service with multiple network options depending on the plan.
- Ting Mobile: Consumer and small-business wireless service.
- CREDO Mobile: Consumer wireless with a values-based brand position.
- PureTalk: Budget-focused prepaid service.
- H2O Wireless: Prepaid service with domestic and international options.
- Lyca Mobile: Prepaid service with an international-calling emphasis.
- Wing, FreeUp Mobile, Gen Mobile, Good2Go Mobile, Reach Mobile, Hello Mobile, Easy Wireless, SpeedTalk, TruConnect, FreedomPop, and others: Smaller or specialized brands whose plans, availability, and network arrangements should be confirmed directly.
The FCC’s MVNO fact sheet lists many prominent U.S. MVNO brands, including Consumer Cellular, CREDO, Boost Mobile, Cricket, Google Fi, H2O, Mint, PureTalk, Red Pocket, Simple Mobile, Straight Talk, Tello, Ting, Total by Verizon, US Mobile, Ultra Mobile, Visible, and Wing.
Cable-company mobile providers
Xfinity Mobile
Parent: Comcast.
Xfinity Mobile is a cable-company wireless provider that combines a national host network with Xfinity Wi-Fi infrastructure, subject to current plan terms. It is often most relevant to customers who already have qualifying Comcast/Xfinity home internet. The FCC identifies Xfinity Mobile as one of the larger U.S. MVNO operations.
Spectrum Mobile
Parent: Charter Communications.
Spectrum Mobile bundles cellular service with Spectrum internet and uses a national host network alongside Spectrum Wi-Fi infrastructure, subject to current terms. Plans may include unlimited and pay-by-the-gig structures. It is generally most relevant to qualifying Spectrum internet customers.

Senior-focused service
Consumer Cellular and Lively are commonly considered by older customers because support, straightforward billing, device availability, accessibility, and emergency features may matter more than maximum data speed.
International use
Google Fi Wireless, T-Mobile, Ultra Mobile, Lyca Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, US Mobile, and Red Pocket may be relevant for international travelers. Compare the exact countries included, high-speed roaming allowance, calls, texts, hotspot use, eSIM availability, fair-use restrictions, and whether the phone must be unlocked.
Google Fi’s plan page showed international connectivity in more than 200 destinations on its higher-tier plan, with plan-specific limits. That is a time-sensitive benefit, not a permanent feature of every Fi plan.
Business and first-responder service
Business customers can compare AT&T Business, Verizon Business, T-Mobile for Business, Comcast Business, Spectrum Business, and specialized services such as FirstNet, operated by AT&T for first responders. Important criteria include pooled data, device management, security controls, fleet management, IoT support, private-network capabilities, priority rules, and dedicated support.
Subsidized service
Eligible consumers may qualify for Lifeline or other government-supported wireless programs. Participation and availability vary by state, provider, and current program rules. Use official federal information and confirm eligibility rather than assuming every low-cost brand participates.

How to choose among U.S. mobile companies
- Check coverage at your actual locations. Test your home, workplace, school, frequent indoor locations, rural roads, and travel routes. Compare usable LTE and 5G, not just a national marketing map.
- Choose postpaid or prepaid. Postpaid may offer device financing, trade-in promotions, family-account features, international packages, and stronger support. Prepaid usually offers simpler eligibility, no long-term contract, and lower entry costs, but may provide fewer phone promotions, less roaming, and lower priority.
- Calculate total cost. Include taxes, government fees, activation, device payments, insurance, hotspot charges, international add-ons, auto-pay requirements, annual prepayment, multiline discounts, and the end date of promotions.
- Check data and hotspot rules. Look for high-speed thresholds, deprioritization language, hotspot limits, video-resolution restrictions, and whether data is slowed or stopped after a threshold.
- Verify device compatibility. Confirm that the phone is unlocked and supports the carrier’s LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE, eSIM, and operating-system requirements. Check IMEI eligibility, especially for imported devices.
- Review roaming and travel terms. A provider that works well domestically may be poor abroad. Compare destinations, high-speed data, calls, texts, hotspot use, and fair-use policies.
- Match support to your needs. Digital-only service may be inexpensive but less suitable if you need retail help, accessibility support, complex business administration, or assistance with porting and financing.
- Understand priority. Two brands may use the same physical towers but deliver different speeds during congestion. “Same network” does not guarantee the same priority, roaming, support, or promotions.
Important limitations when comparing providers
- Coverage is geographic. A regional company may outperform a national brand in its home area.
- Host networks can vary by plan. Do not assign one network to an MVNO without checking the specific plan and SIM or eSIM.
- Coverage maps are not performance tests. They may show population coverage, geographic coverage, 5G availability, or roaming coverage, each of which means something different.
- Subscriber figures are not directly comparable. Companies report customers, connections, retail lines, postpaid phone customers, wholesale lines, and broadband accounts using different definitions.
- “American” does not necessarily mean American-owned. A company can operate extensively in the United States without being U.S.-owned.
- Ownership changes. Acquisitions, rebrands, network sales, and discontinued products can make an otherwise accurate list stale.
Observed Google Fi pricing signal
Google Fi’s plan page showed the following single-line prices when checked during the research period:
- Unlimited Essentials: $35 per month.
- Unlimited Standard: $50 per month.
- Unlimited Premium: $65 per month.
- Flexible: $20 per month plus $10 per GB.
Taxes and government fees were additional. The page also showed different high-speed data thresholds—30 GB, 50 GB, and 100 GB depending on the unlimited plan—and different hotspot, smartwatch, Google One, and international benefits. These are observed, time-sensitive prices rather than evergreen rates. Check the current Google Fi plans before relying on them.
Bottom line
The U.S. mobile market has three principal nationwide network operators—AT&T, T-Mobile US, and Verizon—but the useful list is much larger. Regional carriers can matter most in rural areas, while MVNOs, prepaid brands, and cable providers can reduce costs or offer specialized features. The right comparison is not simply company versus company: check the parent company, retail brand, host network, priority, roaming, coverage at your addresses, device compatibility, and total cost.
