Who invested in Moment Energy?
The US$15 million Series A was co-led by Amazon Climate Pledge Fund and Voyager Ventures. The company also named In-Q-Tel (IQT), Version One Ventures, Overture Ventures, WovenEarth Ventures, Fika Ventures, MCJ, One Small Planet and Climate Capital as participants. Moment Energy’s announcement and its Newswire.ca release reported the round.
Moment Energy is based in Coquitlam, British Columbia, according to GeekWire’s January 2025 report. The announcement said the company had raised US$52 million in venture capital and grants to date. That is the company’s figure as of January 2025, not a current fundraising total.
What does Moment Energy do with retired EV batteries?
It repurposes batteries no longer being used for their original vehicle purpose into stationary battery energy storage systems, often called BESS. Such systems store electricity for later use rather than powering a car. Moment Energy describes applications at commercial and industrial sites, utilities, microgrids, EV charging infrastructure and renewable-energy projects.

The company’s January 2025 announcement describes projects ranging from 400 kWh to 10 MWh. It presents second-life batteries as a way to use some retired packs for stationary storage before eventual recycling. The announcement does not provide a general test or eligibility rule, so it should not be taken to mean that every used EV battery can be safely or economically repurposed.
What was the funding meant to pay for?
Moment Energy said the proceeds would support battery storage production, expansion of its Vancouver facilities and team, and plans for a US factory dedicated to repurposing EV batteries. GeekWire and Axios described the planned facility as being in Texas. These are plans reported at the time of the funding announcement; the sources cited here do not establish the factory’s completion or operating status as of October 7, 2026.

The announcement also referenced a US$20.3 million US Department of Energy award for the factory project in October 2024. That amount is the award described by Moment Energy in its January 2025 announcement, rather than an independently confirmed current project balance.
How does second-life storage compare with new battery systems?
Moment Energy said its systems could be priced “up to 30% lower” than traditional first-life battery systems. This is the company’s comparative claim, not an independently verified saving for every project. Actual project economics depend on the specific batteries, system design and installation; the announcement does not provide a like-for-like cost breakdown.

The distinction is straightforward: first-life systems use new batteries, while second-life systems reuse batteries retired from vehicle service for a different application. Reuse may defer recycling for batteries suitable for stationary storage, but the announcement does not quantify the environmental or financial benefit for a specific installation.
Why was Amazon involved?
Amazon Climate Pledge Fund co-led the round as an investor. Nick Ellis, a principal at the fund, said: “Moment’s second-life battery solution addresses a growing recycling challenge to offer an elegant solution to scalable energy storage.” The quote appeared in the company announcement and was also reported by GeekWire.

When did Moment Energy announce the round?
The announcement date is January 16, 2025. Moment Energy’s page displays that date, its syndicated release is dated January 16, 2025, and GeekWire and Axios published coverage that day. The body of the company page contains a conflicting “January 16, 2024” dateline, which appears to be an internal date error.
