Sometimes. In the U.S., a current Apple Gift Card or redeemed Apple Account balance may be accepted for a one-time AppleCare+ purchase if Apple offers it at checkout. Recurring AppleCare+ is different: Apple says you cannot start it with Apple Account balance alone, and a valid payment method must remain on file. Your result also depends on the card type, device eligibility, and purchase channel.
Which Apple card or balance do you have?
Check the name on the card before counting on it for AppleCare+. Apple uses similar names for products with different rules.

- Apple Gift Card: The current multipurpose card can be used for eligible purchases through Apple retail and online channels, including Apple products and services. That general permission does not guarantee that every AppleCare checkout will accept it. See Apple’s gift-card information and U.S. Gift Card terms.
- Apple Store Gift Card: This separately branded card has narrower terms: it is for U.S. purchases through an Apple Store, Apple.com, or 1-800-MY-APPLE, and cannot be used for Apple Media Services or to buy another gift card. Check its U.S. terms and do not assume it works in every AppleCare payment flow.
- Apple Account balance: Redeeming a card associates its value with the Apple Account. The code or physical card can no longer be used separately. Account balance is not Apple Pay; Apple Pay is a separate payment method. Apple’s U.S. terms restrict U.S.-purchased gift cards to U.S. accounts and purchases.
Apple also notes that some items may not be available for purchase with a Gift Card. For online, Apple Store app, and telephone purchases, its terms say gift-card funds or codes entered at checkout are deducted first, followed by associated Apple Account balance; if those funds do not cover the purchase, another payment method may be needed. The checkout may impose payment-combination limits.
Why recurring AppleCare+ is the important exception
Apple Support says some recurring charges, including AppleCare+, cannot be started using Apple Account balance alone. A valid payment method must remain on file. Apple may use account balance for an entire recurring charge when permitted, but that does not make the balance a substitute for the required payment method. AppleCare+ terms also provide for an authorized payment source for monthly plans and recurring installments. See Apple’s balance-payment guidance and the U.S. recurring-plan terms.

Practical rule: For a one-time AppleCare+ transaction, try the gift card or balance only if Apple presents it as an eligible payment option. For a recurring plan, have a valid credit or debit card or other accepted payment method on file, even if you expect the Apple balance to cover the charge.
Check whether your device can still be covered
Payment does not help if the device is outside its enrollment window. Apple says many new devices can be enrolled in AppleCare+ within 60 days of purchase, but availability and purchase routes vary by product and region. Check the device-specific result rather than treating 60 days as universal.

- On the device, open Settings → General → AppleCare & Warranty.
- Select the device and review the AppleCare options shown.
- Alternatively, use Apple’s coverage and eligibility page. Contact Apple Support or visit an Apple Store if the online option is unavailable.
Apple says that in some cases a customer may be able to buy new coverage within 45 days after an AppleCare plan expires; that option is not universal and the new coverage uses recurring payments. See Apple’s post-expiration guidance.
How to try paying with the gift card
Before checkout
- Confirm the device appears as eligible and note the plan and payment choices offered.
- Confirm the card is an Apple Gift Card, or that its value has been redeemed to the U.S. Apple Account you intend to use. A balance on another account may not be available for this purchase.
- Check the balance through Apple’s gift-card balance page or by calling 1-800-MY-APPLE, as described in the U.S. Gift Card terms.
- If choosing recurring billing, make sure a valid payment method is on file.
On an Apple device
- Open Settings → General → AppleCare & Warranty.
- Select the eligible device and follow the onscreen purchase steps.
- Review the plan type and billing schedule before confirming.
- At payment, select or enter the Apple Gift Card or Apple Account balance if Apple shows it as an available option. Add another accepted payment method if prompted.
- Save the confirmation and check the device’s coverage afterward.

Online or in an Apple Store
Online, sign in with the Apple Account associated with the device, select the offered coverage, and proceed through Apple checkout. If Gift Card or account balance is not shown, do not assume it was applied. An Apple Store can be a useful fallback for a physical card, a checkout problem, or questions near the eligibility deadline, but staff cannot be assumed to override Apple’s payment or eligibility rules.
If Apple rejects the balance
- “Payment method required” or similar: You may have selected a recurring plan. Add a valid payment method and retry; Apple says recurring AppleCare+ cannot be initiated with account balance alone.
- Balance is missing: Check that the card was redeemed to the Apple Account you are using, and that the account and purchase are in the U.S. Check whether you have an Apple Store Gift Card rather than a multipurpose Apple Gift Card, or whether the card has already been redeemed.
- Balance is too low: Apple may require another accepted method for the remainder. The available payment combinations depend on the checkout flow; do not assume Apple Pay, PayPal, or multiple cards can be combined.
- Balance appears sufficient, but Apple still asks for a card: This can be a payment requirement rather than a balance-calculation error, especially for recurring AppleCare+.
- Device is not eligible: Recheck the purchase date and the device-specific options with Apple’s coverage page. Payment method cannot extend an enrollment window.
- Card or code is rejected: Contact Apple Gift Card Support or Apple Support through Apple’s gift-card information page. Avoid unofficial resellers: Apple’s terms prohibit resale and allow action on cards associated with unlawful or fraudulent activity.
One-time coverage or recurring billing?
Choose based on total cost, the options Apple actually offers for your device, and whether you can keep a payment method available. A gift card changes how you fund an eligible transaction; it does not make a plan cheaper or expand its coverage.

For a single device, compare the available standalone plans. AppleCare One is aimed at people with multiple eligible devices: Apple says it begins with up to three devices, subject to eligibility. It is not automatically cheaper. Details are at AppleCare One device management.

AppleCare+ is more than an extended warranty: Apple describes it as additional hardware service and technical support, with accidental-damage service for covered devices. Apple states that its plans include unlimited accidental-damage incidents per covered device, but service fees, exclusions, and plan terms still apply. It does not mean every repair is free.

Theft and loss are not included in standard AppleCare+ by default. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is a separate eligible plan; Apple describes it as providing up to two theft-or-loss incidents every 12 months. AppleCare One also includes theft-and-loss coverage for eligible iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch devices. Check the exact plan for the device and purchase date in Apple’s AppleCare summaries and the current U.S. terms.
AppleCare+ does not replace careful data backups or device security. Before buying, consider the device’s replacement cost, your risk of accidental damage or theft, whether the relevant plan covers the risk you care about, the price Apple quotes for your device, and whether you can maintain recurring payments. Apple does not publish one universal AppleCare+ price: use the device-specific options rather than relying on an old price table.
