Re:

Can You Switch From Social Security Disability Benefits to Retirement Benefits?

For SSDI recipients, Social Security generally performs the switch to retirement benefits automatically at full retirement age. The benefit amount remains the same at conversion, but your exact age, Medicare timing, SSI status, and other benefits matter.

Yes—but for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), you normally do not file a new application or choose a switch. The Social Security Administration (SSA) automatically converts SSDI to retirement benefits when you reach your full retirement age (FRA). SSA says the benefit amount remains the same at that conversion. This rule applies to SSDI, a Social Security Title II benefit; it does not automatically apply to Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

What happens when SSDI reaches full retirement age

SSDI is designed to provide monthly benefits before a person reaches retirement age when a qualifying disability prevents substantial work. Once the beneficiary reaches FRA, the legal category changes from disability entitlement to old-age (retirement) entitlement. The change is automatic under Social Security regulations, rather than an elective claim decision.

SSA describes the process this way: If you’re receiving SSDI benefits, your disability benefits automatically convert to retirement benefits, but the amount remains the same. That sentence appears in SSA’s 2024 publication What You Need to Know When You Get Social Security Disability Benefits.

Question SSDI-to-retirement rule
Do you ordinarily file a new retirement application? No. The conversion is automatic at full retirement age.
What triggers the conversion? Reaching your birth-year-based full retirement age.
Can you receive both benefits on the same earnings record at once? No. SSDI entitlement ends as the retirement entitlement begins.
Does the conversion itself raise or reduce the benefit? SSA says the amount remains the same at conversion.

The conversion is one continuing Social Security benefit

People sometimes describe the change as “switching” because the label on a notice or payment record changes. In practice, it is a change in entitlement category on the same Social Security earnings record. You do not receive one SSDI check and a second retirement check for the same worker’s record at the same time. The disability entitlement ends as the old-age entitlement begins.

Under 20 CFR § 404.316, disability entitlement ends the month before the month in which the person attains full retirement age, and the disability benefit is automatically changed to an old-age benefit. The exact payment date can depend on Social Security’s benefit-month and payment schedule, so use the effective date in your notice rather than assuming the deposit date is the conversion date.

Do you have to apply for retirement benefits?

For a person already receiving SSDI, SSA’s rule is automatic conversion. The regulation at 20 CFR § 404.316 provides that disability entitlement ends the month before the month the person attains FRA, and the disability benefit is automatically changed to an old-age benefit. You should not assume that filing a second retirement claim is required simply because the label on your benefit changes.

That does not mean you should ignore SSA correspondence. Keep notices that describe the conversion, check your payment history, and contact SSA if the agency asks for information or if your payment does not match your record. A notice about a separate issue—such as an overpayment, an offset, or another benefit—may require a response even though the basic conversion itself is automatic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If someone tells you to file a retirement application solely because you reached FRA, ask whether the instruction concerns a separate benefit or a correction to your record. The general SSDI rule is automatic; an individual notice can still contain instructions that apply to that person’s circumstances.

Will your monthly check get smaller or larger?

The conversion itself does not recalculate your benefit as an early or delayed retirement claim. SSA states that the amount remains the same when SSDI converts to retirement benefits. “Same amount” describes the transition, not a promise that every future net deposit will stay identical forever.

  • Annual cost-of-living adjustments can change the gross benefit after the conversion.
  • Medicare Part B or other health-coverage premiums may be deducted from a payment.
  • Tax withholding, overpayment recovery, or another lawful offset can change the amount deposited.
  • A separate benefit, such as a surviving-spouse benefit, can create a record-specific adjustment.

If your deposit changes, compare the gross benefit, deductions, and effective date on your SSA notice rather than assuming the automatic conversion caused an unexplained reduction. A lower net deposit is not necessarily a lower Social Security entitlement; a deduction may have changed instead.

How to determine your full retirement age

FRA is not one universal age. It is tied to your year of birth. SSA’s current FAQ, dated January 2, 2026, gives a specific example: the FRA is 67 for people attaining age 62 in 2026. That example applies to that cohort; it should not be used as the FRA for every SSDI beneficiary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your disability conversion is therefore scheduled by your own birth year, not by the age at which you first qualified for SSDI and not by the age at which you became eligible for Medicare. Use your personal SSA record or an SSA representative to confirm the month in which you reach FRA. If your birthday falls early in a month, the benefit month and notice dates can make the timing look different from the date printed on a calendar, so rely on the agency’s written determination for your record.

Do not substitute the age shown in a general online example for your own FRA. A birth-year table or your my Social Security account can help you identify the applicable age, while SSA can confirm the effective month when the conversion is processed.

SSDI is different from SSI

The automatic-conversion rule concerns SSDI, which is funded through Social Security payroll taxes and is administered under Title II of the Social Security Act. Supplemental Security Income is a separate, needs-based program with different eligibility and payment rules.

If you receive SSI rather than SSDI, or receive both programs, do not assume that SSI will convert to retirement benefits in the same way. The outcome can depend on your income, resources, living arrangement, and any concurrent Social Security entitlement. Read the benefit name on your award notice or payment record and ask SSA which program is changing before you make a financial decision.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A person receiving both SSI and SSDI may see different actions on the two programs. An SSDI-to-retirement conversion does not by itself answer whether SSI continues, changes, or ends. That determination requires the facts SSA has about income and resources.

Medicare age 65 is not the SSDI conversion age

SSA states that Medicare eligibility age remains 65, while SSDI conversion occurs at FRA. Those are separate milestones. A person may become eligible for Medicare before the SSDI-to-retirement conversion, and Medicare coverage does not by itself trigger the change in benefit category.

Milestone What it controls
Age 65 Medicare eligibility reference described by SSA.
Your birth-year-based full retirement age Automatic conversion of SSDI to retirement benefits.

Do not delay a Medicare enrollment decision while waiting for the conversion, and do not treat the conversion notice as proof that your Medicare enrollment is complete. Medicare eligibility, enrollment periods, premiums, and coverage choices are separate questions that require your own record and notices.

What if you also receive a surviving-spouse benefit?

SSA identifies a special situation involving a person who receives SSDI and a reduced surviving-spouse benefit. The agency advises that the person contact SSA at FRA so any necessary adjustment can be made. The ordinary same-amount statement for the SSDI conversion does not tell you how a second benefit will be coordinated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When contacting SSA, have the award notices for both benefits, recent payment details, and your date of birth available. Ask the representative to explain which benefit is being converted, whether the surviving-spouse amount is reduced or adjusted, and when any change will appear. Do not infer the answer from the combined amount of one deposit.

Does automatic conversion let you claim retirement later, up to age 70?

General retirement guidance discusses two choices for people who are not already receiving SSDI: claiming before FRA can permanently reduce a retirement benefit, while delaying after FRA can earn delayed-retirement credits up to age 70. Those rules explain ordinary retirement claiming, not an opt-out from SSDI conversion.

An SSDI beneficiary cannot simply elect to keep the disability classification until age 70 in order to seek delayed-retirement credits. The disability entitlement ends under the automatic-conversion rule when FRA is reached. If you are considering work, stopping benefits, or another change in entitlement, ask SSA for a decision based on your specific record instead of treating general retirement calculators as an election form.

The fact that retirement law discusses early reductions and delayed credits does not create a second application deadline for someone whose SSDI is converting. Those calculations may matter in other retirement claims, but they do not cancel the automatic change required by the disability regulations.

What to do as your conversion approaches

  1. Confirm which program you receive. Check whether your notice says SSDI, SSI, or both. The automatic rule discussed here is for SSDI.
  2. Verify your birth date on your SSA record. FRA is determined by birth year, so an incorrect date can affect the expected conversion month.
  3. Watch for SSA notices. Keep the notice that identifies the end of disability entitlement and the beginning of retirement entitlement.
  4. Compare gross and net amounts. Review the benefit amount and every deduction before concluding that the conversion changed your payment incorrectly.
  5. Check Medicare separately. Age 65 and FRA serve different purposes; one does not substitute for the other.
  6. Contact SSA about another benefit. This is especially important if you receive a reduced surviving-spouse benefit or have an unusual payment arrangement.
  7. Use your personal record for disputes. If an amount, date, or deduction is inconsistent, use your my Social Security account, the telephone number on your notice, or an SSA office for a record-specific explanation.

Before calling, write down the date of the notice, the benefit month affected, the gross amount, the net deposit, and each listed deduction. Ask SSA to identify the effective date and the legal reason for any difference. Keeping both the old and new notices makes it easier to distinguish a category conversion from a separate adjustment.

Situations the automatic rule does not answer by itself

The conversion rule is narrow. It does not, on its own, resolve an overpayment, workers’ compensation or public-disability offset, tax withholding, Medicare premium deduction, work-related cessation issue, or coordination with multiple auxiliary or survivor benefits. Each of those can alter what you receive or what action SSA expects from you.

Likewise, the rule does not establish whether you are currently insured for SSDI, whether a disability appeal is pending, or whether a particular payment is subject to adjustment. Those questions depend on your notices, earnings record, and case status. Ask SSA to identify the controlling notice and effective date before appealing, repaying money, or changing another benefit.

Do not use the conversion rule to decide that an overpayment is harmless, that an offset has ended, or that a pending appeal is resolved. The automatic change in benefit category and a separate case action can occur close together but have different effective dates and explanations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical answer

If you receive SSDI and reach your full retirement age, SSA normally changes the benefit to retirement automatically. You generally do not submit a second retirement application, and SSA says the amount remains the same at the moment of conversion. Confirm your FRA by birth year, keep your notices, treat Medicare at 65 as a separate milestone, and contact SSA if you receive a survivor benefit or see an unexplained adjustment. If your benefit is SSI rather than SSDI, this automatic-conversion explanation does not apply without further case-specific guidance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to file a retirement application when my SSDI reaches full retirement age?

Usually no. SSA automatically changes SSDI to retirement benefits at full retirement age. Review your notices and contact SSA if the agency requests information or your record appears incorrect.

Will my Social Security amount increase when SSDI converts?

SSA says the amount remains the same at conversion. Later cost-of-living adjustments, Medicare premiums, tax withholding, offsets, overpayment recovery, or another benefit can change the gross or net payment.

Is full retirement age always 67?

No. FRA depends on birth year. SSA’s January 2, 2026 FAQ gives 67 for people attaining age 62 in 2026; that example is not universal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I receive SSDI and retirement benefits at the same time on the same earnings record?

No. The disability entitlement ends as the old-age entitlement begins; the two benefits are not paid simultaneously on the same worker record.

Is the SSDI conversion tied to Medicare at age 65?

No. SSA identifies age 65 as the Medicare eligibility reference, while SSDI converts at your birth-year-based full retirement age. Medicare enrollment is a separate matter.

What if I receive SSI too?

SSI is a separate, needs-based program. Do not assume SSI converts automatically; ask SSA how the SSDI change affects your concurrent benefits, income, and resources.

What if I receive a reduced surviving-spouse benefit?

SSA advises people receiving SSDI and a reduced surviving-spouse benefit to contact the agency at full retirement age for any necessary adjustment. The ordinary same-amount rule may not explain the combined payment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I delay the conversion until age 70 to earn delayed-retirement credits?

No general opt-out is provided. Early-claiming reductions and delayed-retirement credits are ordinary retirement rules, not a way to keep SSDI classification after full retirement age.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: SSDI normally converts automatically to Social Security retirement benefits at your birth-year-based full retirement age, and SSA says the amount remains the same at the conversion. Confirm your program, FRA, notices, Medicare status, and any survivor or other benefit separately.
