Sometimes. The retailer or seller that processed the transaction controls whether it can retrieve or reprint a receipt, and the answer can depend on where you bought the item, how long ago, and whether the purchase was linked to your account or payment method. Check your email and purchase history first; if the receipt is not there, ask the original seller. A copy that can be found is not automatically accepted for a return, warranty claim, or tax record.
How to look for a missing receipt
- Identify the purchase. Note whether it was online or in-store, which retailer and location handled it, and approximately when it happened.
- Check your records. Search email, including spam, for an order confirmation or e-receipt. Then check the retailer’s website, app, order history, or purchase history.
- Ask the seller to look it up. If you cannot find it yourself, contact the original store or customer service and ask whether they can provide a duplicate, reprint, or transaction lookup. Be ready to share the approximate date, location, amount, item, and any account or payment details requested.
- Confirm the copy will serve your purpose. If you need proof for a return, exchange, warranty, reimbursement, or tax record, ask what forms of proof that process accepts. Do not assume that a bank statement or screenshot will be enough.
- Ask about alternatives if no receipt is available. The retailer may be able to explain whether it can provide another transaction record or what alternative proof it accepts.
Share only the information needed for the lookup. For example, IKEA US says it may be able to locate warranty proof using the last four digits of the payment card, not the full card number, along with the store, approximate date, and exact transaction amount. IKEA US warranty information
What retailer policies can look like
These examples show why the retailer and country matter. They describe specific policies, not a general rule that every seller follows.
| Retailer and market | What its guidance says |
|---|---|
| Costco (US) | In-warehouse receipts from the previous two years can be viewed or printed through a Costco.com account. For older purchases, Costco directs members to the membership counter with photo ID, membership number, and purchase date. Costco receipt guidance |
| IKEA (US) | For a warranty claim, IKEA says it may be able to locate proof of purchase using the last four card digits, store location, approximate purchase date, and exact transaction amount. Its guidance says proof of purchase is required for warranty claims. IKEA US warranty information |
| Target (US) | Target says customers can request a receipt or gift receipt at purchase. Some in-store purchase details may be available for a return barcode or gift receipt if the transaction was linked using an eligible card, Wallet, or phone number. Target says transactions are available within a few hours for up to approximately one year; cash, check, or unlinked Target GiftCard purchases may not appear under the stated conditions. Target receipt guidance |
| Best Buy (US) | Customers can call Best Buy to request a copy of a store receipt. Online guest customers can look up an order receipt through order status. Best Buy receipt and invoice help |
| Staples (Canada) | For a return when the printed receipt is lost, Staples Canada advises contacting the store where the purchase was made; the store will attempt to reprint it. The company says digital receipts are treated like standard printed receipts for returns and exchanges. Staples Canada receipt guidance |
| UNIQLO (US) | The US FAQ says the e-receipt must be selected at checkout and cannot be resent if deleted. App members who scanned their membership at checkout can find e-receipts in Purchase History. UNIQLO US receipt FAQ |
| UNIQLO (Singapore) | The Singapore FAQ says it cannot provide reprints or copies of past receipts, and that purchase history does not count as a receipt for returns and exchanges in that market. UNIQLO Singapore receipt FAQ |
A reprint may not meet the requirement for a return or claim
There are two separate questions: can the retailer locate the transaction, and will the relevant process accept the record it provides? A purchase-history entry, order confirmation, digital receipt, or reprinted receipt may be treated differently depending on the retailer and the reason you need proof. Ask about the specific return, exchange, warranty, expense, or tax requirement before relying on a recovered record.

The examples also show that account linkage and checkout choices can matter. Target’s US guidance ties some in-store transaction lookup to an eligible card, Wallet, or phone number; UNIQLO US says its e-receipt has to be selected at checkout. By contrast, UNIQLO Singapore says purchase history is not a receipt for returns and exchanges there. Check the local policy rather than assuming another country’s process applies.
