Luxury-watch rentals do exist: a Japan-based listing currently advertises a Submariner for ¥38,500 a month, subject to membership. But those examples do not show that rentals are widespread or that the category is about to take off.
Is a Rolex watch rental really $299 a month?
That figure comes from a 2020 Time+Tide report about Helvetia, an Australian service. The report said its Gold Class cost $299 per month and opened access to a more expensive selection that included Rolex. It described a subscriber borrowing a watch for three months, with an option to buy; it also mentioned a one-month rental for a one-off event.
The same report listed a $99 monthly Silver Class tier. Both figures are historical prices reported in 2020. They do not establish Helvetia’s current terms, current availability, or a rental offer in the United States.
Can you rent a Rolex Submariner now?
A current Japan-specific example is HUBROLEN’s listing for a black Rolex Submariner reference 14060M, priced at ¥38,500 per month. The listing restricts the watch to Gold Plus members and discloses a scratch near the 11 o’clock position. It demonstrates that a Submariner rental listing exists in Japan; it does not establish that the watch is available to a U.S. customer or that the listed item is available at the time you inquire.

Before treating any listing as a usable offer, confirm delivery geography, availability, membership eligibility, the watch’s condition, and the full contract. In particular, check the minimum rental period, deposit, shipping and return costs, insurance, responsibility for damage or loss, late fees, and any purchase option. The headline price alone cannot show what the rental will cost you.
How does renting compare with buying?
Rolex’s U.S. model finder lists purchase prices that vary by Submariner model and material. When accessed October 4, 2026, it showed $10,050 for a 41 mm Oystersteel Submariner without a date, $11,350 for a steel Submariner Date, and $50,900 for yellow-gold Submariner Date models. These are listed U.S. purchase prices, not resale values or estimates of total ownership cost. Check the current Rolex model listings for up-to-date prices.
| Question | What to compare |
|---|---|
| Is the rental price comparable? | Use the same watch reference, rental geography, and time horizon. Add every month of the minimum commitment, plus delivery, return, membership, and other fees. |
| What happens if the watch is damaged, lost, or late? | Read the contract for the deposit, insurance coverage, exclusions, customer liability, and late-return charges. |
| Can you buy the watch later? | Confirm whether a purchase option exists and how its price is calculated. Do not assume rental payments count toward a purchase. |
| What does buying cost in practice? | Compare the current price of the same model with your realistic resale assumption and any costs of ownership. A Rolex list price is not a guaranteed resale price. |
Without those terms, multiplying a monthly rental price by a chosen number of months and comparing it with a purchase price can mislead. The calculation needs the same watch, the real minimum term and fees, and a defensible ownership or resale assumption.
What are you paying to rent?
The Submariner is both a luxury status object and a purpose-built dive watch. Rolex describes the Submariner and Submariner Date as water-resistant to 300 metres (1,000 feet) and equipped with a unidirectional bezel graduated to 60 minutes. Submariner Date models use calibre 3235, according to the official product information. Those specifications help explain the watch, but they do not show whether people want to rent it.

Rolex says a finished Superlative Chronometer has a rate deviation of −2/+2 seconds per day. That is the brand’s stated precision standard, not a rental-service performance guarantee or evidence of rental demand. See the Rolex Submariner newsroom information.

The available examples show that luxury-watch rental is a real but niche service category; they do not establish broad adoption, a category-wide growth rate, or a reliable forecast. The $299 Australian price is historical, while the current Japanese listing has different geography, currency, and membership conditions.
Rental can also be operationally demanding. A rental business must acquire and manage inventory, handle delivery and returns, account for wear and depreciation, and keep customers coming back. In its FY2026 annual report filed with the SEC, apparel-rental company Rent the Runway reported 183,552 total subscribers, including active and paused subscribers, and 143,796 active subscribers as of January 31, 2026. The filing discusses inventory, fulfillment expenses, rental-product depreciation, and retention. This is evidence that a rental model can operate at scale in apparel—not evidence that watch rentals have comparable customers or economics. See the Rent the Runway filing.
Whether luxury-watch rentals will become much more common remains open. The examples establish that providers have offered them, but not that enough customers will rent high-value watches often enough to make the business mainstream.
