Bitcoin’s ledger permanently records addresses, balances and transactions, so anyone can inspect an address’s history. The ledger does not normally attach a real-world name to that address. Analysts can infer that several addresses may be controlled together, then seek off-chain evidence—such as a public disclosure, a service record or information obtained through lawful process—to attribute that activity to a named person or organization. A likely address cluster is not the same thing as an identified owner.
What Bitcoin’s public ledger can—and cannot—show
Bitcoin transactions are visible to everyone and remain on the network permanently. Bitcoin.org summarizes this plainly: “All Bitcoin transactions are stored publicly and permanently on the network, which means anyone can see the balance and transactions of any Bitcoin address.” An address therefore has a searchable history of incoming and outgoing transactions, amounts, times and the other addresses involved.

That visibility is not a built-in identity system. An address is a pseudonymous identifier, not a name, passport number or verified account. Unless the person controlling it reveals identifying information, the ledger itself does not tell you who that person is. A wallet can also generate and use many addresses, and a custodian or organization can control addresses on behalf of customers. Treating an address, a wallet, a service and a person as interchangeable leads to incorrect conclusions.

Address
A Bitcoin address is a destination identifier used in transactions. Its history is public, but the identity of the person or organization using it is not automatically public.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Wallet
A wallet is the software, hardware or service arrangement that manages private keys and creates transactions. One wallet may use many addresses over time. Conversely, an address shown in a transaction may be controlled by a regulated exchange, a payment service, a company treasury or several people operating under shared control rather than by one individual.
Address cluster
An address cluster is a group that analysts infer may share control. Clustering is a statement about likely common control, not a finding that a particular human owns the group. The inference can be useful for following flows, but it remains a hypothesis whose strength depends on the heuristic and the surrounding evidence.
How analysts move from a transaction to an ownership claim
Ownership analysis has two separate stages: first, infer which addresses may belong together; second, find evidence connecting that group to a named entity. Chainalysis describes the distinction this way: “No amount of on-chain analysis alone can prove that a wallet belongs to a particular entity, because identity does not live on the blockchain.”

Record the transaction identifiers, inputs, outputs, dates, amounts and counterparties visible on the public ledger. This establishes what happened on-chain without assigning a name.
- Map the transaction graph. Follow funds through successive transactions and note recurring patterns, address reuse and relationships among inputs and outputs. A graph can show how value moved, but movement alone does not establish who directed it.
- Apply a clustering heuristic. One commonly discussed heuristic is common-input ownership: when several addresses appear as inputs in one transaction, an analyst may infer that they were available to the same controller. The result is an inferred cluster, not proof of a person’s identity. The assumptions behind the heuristic and the possibility of false linkage must be documented.
- Look for recognizable service interactions. A cluster may send funds to or receive funds from an exchange or another service whose addresses have been identified. That can support a label for the service involved, but a service label is not automatically a label for the customer who ultimately controlled the funds.
- Find an independent off-chain link. Useful links can include a public statement by the controller, a published address, a business record, or identifying information held by a service. The more direct and independent the link, the stronger the attribution.
- State the conclusion at the right level. Say whether the evidence supports an address, a probable cluster, a named service or a named individual. Include the basis for the conclusion and the uncertainty that remains.
Clustering is not attribution
| Output | What it answers | Evidence to examine | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|---|
| Address clustering | Which addresses may share control? | The heuristic used, transaction structure, consistency across the graph and possible false-linkage scenarios | The real-world identity of the controller |
| Entity attribution | Which named service, organization or person may be linked to the address or cluster? | The source, directness and independence of the off-chain identifying link, plus corroboration | That every address in a related flow belongs to the named entity |
These outputs should not be merged in a report or news story. “Addresses associated with a probable cluster” is a materially different statement from “the wallet belongs to an individual.” A service label may be well supported while the identity of the service’s customer remains unknown.

How an exchange can become an investigative lead
Suppose on-chain tracing follows funds to an exchange. The ledger can show the deposit address and the subsequent movement of funds within the visible transaction graph. The exchange, however, may hold customer records that are not on the blockchain. Investigators can seek relevant records through lawful process, depending on the jurisdiction and the circumstances.
This route is a possible investigative path, not a guaranteed identification. Records may not exist, may be incomplete, may belong to an intermediary or may identify an account holder without proving who exercised ultimate control of the funds. A careful account therefore distinguishes “funds reached a service,” “the service identified an account” and “the account was controlled by a particular person.” Each step requires its own evidence.
Why an arbitrary Bitcoin address may remain unattributed
No identity field on the ledger
Bitcoin records transaction data, not a civil identity. If the controller never publishes an address or connects it to a service that keeps identifying records, on-chain inspection may end with a detailed history but no name.

Shared and custodial control
Addresses can be used by custodians, organizations or multiple people. A transaction pattern that looks like one controller may instead reflect an operational process or shared authority. The available sources do not establish a universal method that resolves those cases for every address.

Heuristic error and incomplete context
Clustering relies on assumptions about how transactions were constructed. If an assumption is wrong, unrelated addresses can be grouped or related addresses can be left apart. A cluster should therefore be accompanied by the rule that produced it and a discussion of plausible alternatives.
Attribution depends on evidence outside the chain
A named attribution is only as strong as its identifying link. A screenshot, an unverified claim or a label copied from another database may be weaker than a contemporaneous public disclosure or records obtained directly from a service. Analysts should identify the source and explain whether it is direct, independent and corroborated.
What accuracy evidence actually exists
There is no general, independently established success rate for identifying the owner of an arbitrary Bitcoin address. A 2025 USENIX Security study evaluated illicit-service attribution against ground-truth data from three seized services—BestMixer, Hansa Market and Wall Street Market. It examined address overlap, money flows and address roles. Those cases provide a bounded evaluation of methods in a specific setting; they are not a population-wide accuracy statistic and should not be used to claim that any address can be identified at a fixed probability.
A 2018 peer-reviewed article on discovering who is behind illicit Bitcoin use describes the need to combine technical, behavioral and criminological elements. It is useful context for why attribution can be difficult, but it is not a current measurement of performance for today’s services or for ordinary wallet owners.

Privacy: public does not mean automatically identifiable
Bitcoin’s model is often described as pseudonymous. That means activity is associated with addresses rather than names, not that activity is hidden. The transaction graph is public and permanent, and information disclosed elsewhere can make a connection easier to establish later.
Bitcoin.org’s privacy guidance warns that publishing addresses or transaction details can make them easier to connect to a user. Reusing an address publicly, posting a payment receipt with identifying context or linking an address to a profile can supply the missing off-chain bridge. Once a connection is made, the historical transactions visible from that address may be examined as well.
For personal-finance purposes, the practical distinction is important: anyone can inspect the ledger, but only additional evidence can support a claim about the person behind an address. Public visibility and personal identification are separate facts.

How to assess a claim that someone owns a Bitcoin wallet
- Define the object. Is the claim about one address, a wallet, an inferred cluster, a service account or an individual?
- Read the transaction evidence. Check the exact transactions and whether the claimed relationship is visible or inferred.
- Identify the heuristic. If clustering is involved, ask what rule was used and what assumptions it makes.
- Separate service from person. A transfer to an exchange can support an exchange-related label without identifying its customer.
- Locate the off-chain link. Look for a public disclosure, service record or other source that actually connects the pseudonymous activity to a name.
- Check independence. A label repeated across databases is not necessarily independent corroboration if all databases copied the same original claim.
- State confidence proportionately. Use terms such as “observed,” “consistent with,” “probable” or “identified,” and explain the evidence supporting that level.
- Consider alternatives. Ask whether a custodian, organization, shared-control arrangement or intermediary could produce the same pattern.
- Record the date and scope. Attribution can change as new disclosures or records appear, while the underlying transactions remain permanent.
Common questions about Bitcoin wallet ownership
Can a crypto wallet be traced to its owner?
Its transactions can often be traced through the public ledger. Tracing reaches a person only when off-chain evidence connects the pseudonymous activity to that person; the trace itself is not an identity.

Does a large balance reveal who owns an address?
No. Balance and transaction history are public attributes of an address, not identifying credentials. A large balance may attract attention but does not supply a name.
Does finding an exchange deposit identify the customer?
It can give investigators a lead to records held by the exchange. Whether those records exist, can be obtained lawfully and identify the ultimate controller depends on the service and the facts of the case.
What is the difference between wallet clustering and wallet attribution?
Clustering infers common control among addresses. Attribution links an address or cluster to a named service, organization or person using off-chain evidence. The first does not automatically produce the second.
Bottom line
On-chain data can reveal a Bitcoin address’s complete public history and can support hypotheses about which addresses are used together. It normally cannot, by itself, reveal the real-world owner. A defensible identification requires a documented off-chain link, careful separation of address, cluster, service and individual, and a confidence statement that matches the evidence.
