Can you fly without a REAL ID? For a U.S. domestic flight, you can still try to travel if you bring another ID accepted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). If you arrive without any acceptable ID, TSA may try to verify your identity and may subject you to additional screening, but it does not guarantee you’ll be allowed through security. TSA’s published guidance does not confirm an online payment option or fee for travelers without acceptable ID, so don’t assume you can pay online to get through the checkpoint.
What changed on May 7, 2025?
Since May 7, 2025, TSA has not accepted a noncompliant state driver’s license or identification card as valid identification at the airport security checkpoint. A REAL ID-compliant license is one way to meet the requirement, but it is not the only one. TSA’s acceptable-ID list includes other credentials, and the agency advises travelers to check that list before departure because it can change.
This is a checkpoint identification rule for domestic U.S. air travel. It does not explain international entry-document requirements or guarantee that an airline will accept a particular document for boarding.
Can you pay TSA online if you don’t have a REAL ID?
TSA’s published guidance describes identity verification for travelers who arrive without acceptable identification, but it does not provide an online payment portal, fee, eligibility rules, or payment instructions. There is therefore no verified payment amount or process to follow based on that guidance. Do not rely on a payment claim or third-party link as a substitute for an ID TSA accepts.

Payment, TSA PreCheck, or a noncompliant state license does not establish that you can enter the security checkpoint. TSA PreCheck passengers are also subject to the identification requirements.
What IDs can you bring instead?
If you do not have a REAL ID-compliant license, check whether you already have another credential on TSA’s current acceptable identification list. Common options include:

- State credentials: A REAL ID-compliant state driver’s license or ID, or an eligible enhanced state driver’s license or ID.
- Passport credentials: A U.S. passport book or passport card.
- Other government or trusted traveler credentials: Examples include a Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, or FAST card; a U.S. military ID; and a permanent resident card. TSA’s page lists additional forms of identification.
For the credentials on its list, TSA says expired ID is accepted for up to two years. A temporary driver’s license is not an acceptable ID. Check the live TSA list before travel rather than relying on an old copy or assuming an unlisted document will work.
What happens if you arrive without acceptable ID?
TSA may ask you to complete an identity-verification process, which can include providing information such as your name and current address. Additional screening may follow. If TSA cannot confirm your identity, you will not be allowed into the security checkpoint; identity verification is not a guaranteed exception to the ID requirement.

TSA does not provide a dependable current wait-time estimate for this process. Arriving without an accepted credential means the screening outcome and added time are uncertain, so do not plan a tight airport arrival around being able to complete verification.
What to do before your trip
- Check your document. Confirm that your state license or ID is REAL ID-compliant, or identify another credential on TSA’s current accepted list.
- Check the live TSA list again before departure. TSA says the list may change; use its checkpoint identification page for the current requirements.
- If you need a state ID, consult your state DMV. REAL ID application rules and required documents vary by state, so use your own DMV’s instructions.
- If you lack acceptable ID at the airport, cooperate if TSA offers identity verification. Be prepared for possible additional screening, and understand that TSA can refuse checkpoint access if it cannot confirm who you are.
- For a traveler under 18 on a domestic itinerary, check with the airline. TSA says it does not require ID for children under 18, but airline requirements can differ.
How much extra friction should you expect?

TSA has not published a reliable present-day wait-time comparison for these situations. A TSA Utah advisory published April 24, 2025, said 81% of travelers at TSA checkpoints nationwide had presented acceptable identification, including a REAL ID. That was a historical snapshot, not a current rate.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can TSA PreCheck replace a REAL ID?
No. TSA includes PreCheck passengers in its identification guidance; PreCheck does not make a noncompliant state ID acceptable.
Can I use a temporary driver’s license at the checkpoint?
No. TSA’s guidance says a temporary driver’s license is not an acceptable ID.
