Re:

Can You Amend a Tax Return After the IRS Starts an Audit?

You can generally amend an individual federal tax return after an IRS audit starts, but the amendment does not replace your audit response or extend its deadline.

Yes. You can generally file Form 1040-X to correct an individual federal income tax return after the IRS has started examining it. But an amendment does not stop, replace, or automatically resolve the audit: keep following the notice’s instructions and deadlines, and account for any changes the IRS has already made.

Amending a return and answering an audit are separate tasks

Form 1040-X is used to correct a previously filed individual income tax return, including certain amounts the IRS has already adjusted. An audit response, by contrast, gives the IRS information or records requested for its examination. Filing the form by itself is not established as a substitute for responding to an audit notice.

Start with the notice. It identifies what the IRS is examining, what information it wants, how to submit a response, and the response deadline. Keep to that schedule while deciding whether and how to amend. If you do not respond by the date in the notice, the IRS may complete the examination and send a report proposing changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your correction concerns an item under examination, explain in your audit response how the correction relates to the issue and the documents the IRS requested. Do not assume that submitting Form 1040-X has delivered the records, answered the questions, or met the notice deadline. Use the notice’s stated response method and include the information it requests.

Keep the two processes straight even if they concern the same figures: the amendment asks the IRS to correct return amounts, while the audit response addresses the examination questions. The IRS’s audit guidance says an amended return does not affect selection of the original return, but it does not say that an amendment completes the examination or changes the notice’s response date. Follow any instructions the IRS gives you about how to respond.

Decide what to do based on the audit’s stage

The examination is open

Compare the proposed correction with the issue named in the notice. If they overlap, the amendment and audit response may concern the same figures, so the IRS needs a clear explanation of how the correction relates to the examination. If they do not overlap, the correction may still be relevant to the return, but the audit notice remains a separate obligation.

Before filing, check whether the IRS has already changed any amounts on the return. That affects the starting figures on Form 1040-X. If the examination is active and the correction touches an examined item, proposed adjustment, or already-adjusted amount, consider getting help from a qualified tax professional or tax controversy representative. The right course can depend on the notice, the records, and the status of the case.

There is no universal rule to amend immediately or wait until the examination ends. Consider whether the correction is related to the examined issue, whether the IRS has already made an adjustment, whether you expect a refund or owe additional tax, and what the notice asks you to do by its deadline. An amendment may be appropriate to correct the return, but it is not a substitute for presenting the facts and documents requested in the examination.

The IRS has proposed changes

Read the report or other correspondence carefully to determine what the IRS has proposed and how to respond. A correction that concerns a proposed change should not be presented as though the IRS has not acted on the return. Use the amounts and status that apply at this stage, and continue to meet any response deadline the IRS has given you.

The available federal guidance distinguishes correcting a return from answering the examination; it does not establish that filing Form 1040-X alone accepts, disputes, or resolves a proposed adjustment. If you are unsure how the proposed changes affect your amendment, get qualified help before deciding what to submit.

The examination is complete

Once the audit has resulted in an assessment, the appropriate route can depend on whether the liability is still unpaid and whether you are seeking to challenge the assessment or claim a refund. IRS audit reconsideration is available only in specified circumstances, including some cases where the assessed liability remains unpaid. If you have paid and seek a refund, IRS guidance directs you to claim it using Form 1040-X.

Reconsideration and a refund claim are not interchangeable labels for the same step. The IRS describes reconsideration as a way to ask it to reevaluate certain audit assessments; the unpaid status of the liability is one important condition in the situations it discusses. If you paid the assessed tax and want a refund, the IRS directs you to Form 1040-X instead. Check the applicable instructions and deadlines for your situation rather than assuming that a completed audit can simply be reopened by filing an amendment.

Prepare Form 1040-X with the right starting figures

Form 1040-X is not simply a second copy of the original return. Its instructions explain how to report corrected amounts and the difference from the figures previously reported or adjusted. The December 2025 instructions say the form can be used to change amounts previously adjusted by the IRS.

  1. Identify the return and the correction. Confirm the tax year and the specific figures or items you intend to change. Gather the original return, the audit notice and any IRS adjustment or proposed-change documents.
  2. Check whether the IRS has already adjusted the return. If it has, use the adjusted figures when preparing the comparison. The Form 1040-X instructions say column A should show the amount after the IRS adjustment—not automatically the amount on the return as originally filed.
  3. Calculate the corrected figures. Work out how the proposed correction changes the relevant amounts, taking account of adjustments already made. Make sure the figures on the form are consistent with the explanation and supporting records.
  4. Include relevant supporting forms and schedules. IRS filing guidance calls for corrected return information and supporting forms or schedules relevant to the change. Include records that substantiate the correction, and respond separately to any documents the audit notice requests.
  5. Follow the applicable submission instructions. Use the current Form 1040-X instructions for the tax year and the IRS’s filing guidance. Keep copies of what you submit and evidence of when and how you sent it.

For example, if you originally reported one amount and the IRS later adjusted that same item, column A should reflect the amount after the adjustment. Starting with the original figure instead can misstate the comparison and the change you are asking the IRS to recognize.

Before sending the form, make sure the explanation describes the correction and that the attached schedules support the corrected amounts. If the same issue appears in the audit notice, make sure your separate audit submission responds to the IRS’s particular request; do not rely on the amendment package to do that automatically. The IRS’s December 2025 Form 1040-X instructions are the relevant reference for column A when the IRS has already adjusted the return.

Check the refund-claim deadline before relying on an amendment

The general federal deadline to claim a refund is three years after the original return was filed or two years after the tax was paid, whichever period ends later. Special rules can apply, so do not treat the general rule as a guarantee that a particular claim is timely. Check the rules that fit your circumstances and the relevant filing and payment dates.

This deadline matters when the correction would reduce tax or produce a refund. It is a separate question from whether an audit is open: filing during an examination does not, by itself, tell you whether a refund claim is timely. If the deadline may be close or a special rule may apply, get advice promptly rather than waiting for the examination to finish.

Use the original filing date and payment history to assess the general period; do not assume that the date the audit began changes it. The applicable exceptions may depend on facts beyond those dates, so check the IRS refund-claim guidance or get help if you are close to a deadline. A potential refund claim and a response due under an audit notice are separate timing questions, and both may need attention.

Filing an amendment does not cancel audit selection

The IRS says filing an amended return does not affect the selection process for the original return. It also screens amended returns, and an amended return may be selected for audit. Those points do not establish that filing an amendment necessarily triggers an audit, nor that an amendment prevents one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical takeaway is to file only to correct the return, not as a way to make an existing examination go away or to avoid a possible future review. The amendment and the examination remain distinct processes, and the IRS may handle each under its own procedures.

The IRS’s “IRS audits” guidance states that filing an amended return does not affect selection of the original return, while amended returns also go through screening and may be selected for audit. That is a caution about separate screening, not a prediction that any particular amended return will be audited. There is no basis to treat an amendment as either an automatic audit trigger or protection from an audit.

How long processing takes—and what that estimate does not mean

IRS guidance says most amended returns are generally processed in 8–12 weeks, with some taking up to 16 weeks. This is a processing estimate, not a promise about a particular return and not a measure of how quickly an active audit will conclude. It also does not answer whether filing an amendment during an examination is the best choice for your case.

Federal and state corrections are not the same filing

This guidance concerns U.S. federal individual income tax returns. If a federal correction changes figures used on a state return, a separate state correction may be required. Check with the relevant state tax agency for its forms, deadlines, and procedures; a federal Form 1040-X does not itself amend a state return.

State filing rules are separate from the federal audit process, so do not assume the federal amendment automatically updates a state filing or pauses a state deadline. Ask the state tax agency whether the federal change requires a state amended return and what supporting information it expects.

When to get tax help

Professional assistance is especially worth considering when the amendment concerns an item under examination, the IRS has already adjusted the return, a report proposes additional tax, or you are unsure whether to seek reconsideration or a refund. A qualified tax professional or tax controversy representative can review the notice, the figures and the case stage before you decide what to submit.

Bring the original return, all IRS notices and adjustment documents, the records supporting the correction, and any prior responses or proof of submission. Those materials help the adviser distinguish the requested amendment from the audit response and identify which deadlines still apply.

The Taxpayer Advocate Service’s audit-notice guidance, published March 3, 2026 and updated March 23, 2026, emphasizes using the notice to understand the issue, requested documents, and how and when to respond. If you consult someone, provide the complete notice rather than only a summary of the audit issue, since the exact request and due date matter.

What to do next

  • Read the audit notice and note its exact response deadline and requested records.
  • Determine whether the proposed correction concerns an examined item.
  • Check whether the IRS has already adjusted the return, and use the adjusted amount as the Form 1040-X starting figure where required.
  • Prepare the amendment with relevant supporting forms, schedules, and records.
  • Check the refund-claim deadline and any potentially applicable special rule.
  • Keep answering the audit separately unless the IRS gives you different instructions.

If the IRS has also asked whether you filed other required returns, treat that as a distinct issue: the CP75A FAQ says taxpayers should continue filing required returns by their due dates. That instruction is not a substitute answer to whether to amend the particular year under examination. For the year being audited, continue to follow the notice and keep the amendment process separate from any required return for another year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I file an amended return while being audited?

Generally, yes. You can use Form 1040-X to correct a previously filed individual federal income tax return. Filing it does not stop or replace the examination, so respond to the audit notice by its deadline and provide the requested information separately.

Will amending my return stop the audit?

No. An amendment does not automatically end or pause an audit. The IRS may continue the examination, and you should keep following the notice unless the IRS gives you different instructions.

Does filing an amended return trigger an audit?

The IRS says an amended return is screened and may be selected for audit, but that does not mean filing one necessarily triggers an audit. It also does not change selection of the original return.

What if the IRS already changed my return?

The December 2025 Form 1040-X instructions say column A should reflect the amount after the IRS adjustment. Do not automatically use the original filed amount as the starting figure. If the adjustment overlaps with the audit issue, consider qualified tax help.

What if the audit is over and I disagree with the result?

The appropriate route depends on the case and whether the assessed liability remains unpaid. IRS audit reconsideration is available in specified circumstances, including some unpaid assessments. If you have paid and seek a refund, IRS guidance directs you to claim it using Form 1040-X.

Should I keep filing other tax returns while one year is being audited?

Yes. IRS guidance in the CP75A notice FAQ says to continue filing required returns by their due dates. That concerns required returns and is separate from whether to amend the tax year under examination.

The Bottom Line

You can generally amend an individual federal return after an IRS audit starts, but Form 1040-X does not answer the audit notice or stop its deadlines. Check whether the IRS has already adjusted the figures, support the correction, and keep responding to the examination. If the audit is complete, distinguish an unpaid-liability reconsideration request from a refund claim after payment.
