How stolen cryptocurrency can—and cannot—be recovered
Cryptocurrency transfers can often be traced across public blockchains, but tracing is not the same as recovering money. A wallet address is not automatically an identified person, and following funds does not freeze them. Recovery generally requires an exchange or other holder to restrict access, or law enforcement to obtain and execute legal authority to seize assets. A return may then depend on legal proceedings.

Exchange freezes
An exchange may freeze funds under its internal procedures or in response to legal process. Contact it through a support channel on its independently verified official website. A report to an exchange does not reverse an on-chain transfer or guarantee that the exchange can access the funds. The FBI explains exchange freezes and possible civil litigation in its August 11, 2023 warning.

Investigators may use transaction data and other investigative methods to trace funds and seek seizure through legal authority. Private recovery companies cannot issue seizure orders; the FBI states this explicitly in its cryptocurrency recovery warning.

Forfeiture and return
Even after assets are seized, civil or criminal forfeiture procedures may come before victims receive money. In a March 13, 2026 announcement, the U.S. Department of Justice said about $470,735 would be returned to two Maine victims after the FBI seized 470,773 USDT traced to their payments. It is a documented case, not evidence of a typical recovery rate or a promise that other victims will be repaid.
Civil litigation
The FBI notes that victims may choose to pursue civil litigation. Whether a lawsuit makes sense depends on the facts, jurisdiction, whether defendants or assets can be identified, and advice from a qualified lawyer. Litigation is not a guaranteed route to recovering cryptocurrency.

What to do after discovering a loss
- Stop sending money and cut off contact with the suspected scammer. Do not pay a supposed tax, release charge or recovery fee to unlock funds.
- Secure any account that may be compromised. Contact the exchange using its independently located official website or phone number—not contact details from an unsolicited call or message. The FBI describes exchange-impersonation attempts that use urgency to solicit log-in details, identification or link clicks in its warning.
- Preserve the records. Collect transaction IDs or hashes; sending and receiving wallet addresses; cryptocurrency type and amount; dates and times; exchange and account records; messages, emails and receipts. The FBI lists transaction details as important information for a report in its victim guidance.
- Report the loss. In the United States, report to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and/or a local FBI field office; you may also report to local law enforcement. Follow the current official instructions for your jurisdiction.
- Do not share sensitive information with an unsolicited recovery contact. Do not provide wallet credentials, financial details or personal identifying information, and do not pay an upfront fee. The FBI says law enforcement does not charge victims to investigate crimes.
How to spot cryptocurrency recovery scams
After a loss, a second fraud may target you with a promise to retrieve the first payment. The FBI says fraudulent recovery businesses may approach victims through social media, messaging platforms, search results, advertisements or comments on news and video pages.
- Upfront-fee demands: A supposed recovery provider requests money before doing anything, then disappears.
- More fees after a report: A firm supplies an incomplete or inaccurate tracing report, then demands additional payments.
- False authority or affiliation: A contact claims it can order a seizure or says it is connected to law enforcement or a government agency.
- Impersonated law firms: The FBI has warned about fictitious firms posing as lawyers authorized to investigate recovery cases and falsely claiming to work with agencies such as the FBI or CFPB. Victims who were further exploited by fictitious law firms reported losses totaling over $9.9 million between February 2023 and February 2024, according to the FBI IC3’s 2024 alert.
- Exchange impersonation: An unsolicited message creates urgency about an account problem and asks for log-in information, identification or a link click. End the contact and reach the exchange independently.
A polished website, a tracing report, a government logo or knowledge of your case is not proof that a service is legitimate. Verify an attorney directly with the relevant licensing authority and check any claimed agency contact through that agency’s official channel. The FBI advises against sending money or personal information to unknown people who claim they can recover stolen cryptocurrency.
Which recovery route has authority to act?

Why tracing may not lead to a return
Funds can move quickly through multiple wallet addresses, making an investigation more difficult. Transfers involving overseas exchanges can pose additional challenges, particularly in jurisdictions with less stringent anti-money-laundering laws or regulations, according to the FBI’s 2023 warning. Even when investigators identify a path, the ability to freeze, seize and return assets depends on who controls them and the relevant legal process.
This explanation focuses on U.S. reporting and legal routes described by the FBI, IC3 and DOJ. Reporting options, exchange procedures and available remedies differ by country and by case. Follow the current instructions of local authorities and seek advice from a lawyer licensed in the relevant jurisdiction if you are considering litigation.
