The bigger question is whether your work is still building skills, compensation, responsibility, and options—or whether your role has stalled. Compare a credible internal path with realistic external opportunities and their risks; there is no universal number of years that means it is time to leave.
Why there is no universal time limit
Employer tenure is context, not a career deadline. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a median of 4.1 years with the current employer among U.S. wage-and-salary workers in January 2026, up from 3.9 years in January 2024. That figure describes a population, not the ideal stay for an individual; it is influenced by the age profile of workers and by hiring and separations. It also measures time with an employer, not necessarily time in the same position. BLS tenure data
Tenure differs by age, too: in January 2026, the BLS median was 9.6 years for workers ages 55–64 and 3.0 years for workers ages 25–34. These are U.S. population comparisons, not recommendations or predictions about any one worker.
How to tell whether staying is still helping
Assess the work you are doing and the opportunities available, rather than counting years. A long stay can be productive when your employer continues to offer growth, including through a new role or promotion. Staying in the same company is not the same as staying in the same job.

Learning and skills
Ask whether your current role is building expertise that remains useful beyond your employer, and whether you have access to training or challenging assignments. A BLS-hosted working-paper abstract examining NLSY79 data found that formal and informal training declined steeply with position tenure; after accounting for position tenure, employer tenure and experience had relatively weak results. That study-specific finding is a reason to check whether learning has gone flat—not a rule that workers should leave a position after a set period. BLS-hosted training study
Pay, responsibility, and internal options
Consider whether your pay and responsibilities have progressed, and whether a promotion, lateral move, or more substantial assignment is realistically available. OECD’s 2024 report says within-firm wage growth—including on-the-job growth and promotions—is the largest source of wage growth across the age groups it studied. Its summary also attributes around two-thirds of overall wage growth to within-firm mobility; the summary does not give a data year for that figure, so it should not be read as a current annual rate. Work quality and fit
Salary is only part of the decision. OECD’s job-quality framework also considers security and the working environment, including meaningful work, flexibility, ambitions, and training and development opportunities. Think about which aspects matter most to you and whether your current job is meeting them. OECD job-quality framework
Compare an internal move with an external one
A voluntary move can support career progression, but changing employers is not automatically better. A move may involve a period without work, lost benefits, relocation, or a reduced value for skills tied to your current employer. The OECD describes job mobility as a potential driver of pay and career progress while noting that involuntary changes can mean losing firm-specific skills and having difficulty finding another job. | Factor | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Learning and skills | Will this option build transferable skills, training, or current expertise? |
| Responsibility and progression | Is there a concrete path to a promotion, more challenging assignment, or useful lateral move? |
| Compensation and security | How do realistic pay, benefits, stability, and transition costs compare? |
| Work quality and fit | How do meaningful work, flexibility, well-being, and the working environment compare? |
| Transition risk | Is the change voluntary and direct, or could it involve unemployment, relocation, lost benefits, or less value from firm-specific skills? |
How age and transition conditions affect the choice
Age can affect both mobility and the value of employer-specific experience, but it does not dictate the right choice. In an OECD analysis of Austria, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, and Portugal using 2000–2019 data, workers older than 50 had wage growth 0.26% below average with job-to-job mobility and 0.19% below average when staying at the firm. These are comparisons with average wage growth—not evidence that the workers’ own wages fell—and they should not be generalized to every country or individual. OECD career-mobility report
When comparing options, account for what you might lose or gain in the transition as well as the role itself: continuity of income and benefits, employer-specific knowledge, and the practical likelihood of securing the next job. A direct, voluntary move is not the same risk as an involuntary change or a transition that leaves you out of work.

What to do before deciding
- Describe what is missing. Identify whether the issue is learning, pay, responsibility, work quality, security, or a lack of internal options.
- Ask for a specific internal path. Discuss a development plan, promotion criteria, challenging assignment, or lateral move, and ask what steps and timing would make it real.
- Check whether the path is credible. Look for concrete responsibilities, support, and decision points rather than relying only on a general promise of future growth.
- Compare real external roles. Evaluate actual responsibilities, pay and benefits, stability, work quality, and transition risks against the internal option.
- Choose based on the opportunity, not the tenure number. If neither option is clear, gather the missing information before treating time served as the reason to leave or stay.
Conclusion
Long tenure is not automatically a career liability. Staying makes sense when the job or an internal move continues to support your goals; leaving may make sense when growth has stalled and a realistic alternative is stronger. Judge the next opportunity against the one you have, not against a fixed year count.
