Yes, a teenager can create a Roblox hit that attracts major industry attention. But the evidence does not show that teen developers commonly make millions: Roblox’s reported payouts range from a $1,550 median among DevEx creators to a $1.3 million average for its top 1,000 creators. Those figures describe very different parts of the earnings distribution, and neither tells a new creator what they are likely to earn.
How much do Roblox developers make?
Roblox reported that creators earned $1,503.1 million in 2025, up from $922.8 million in 2024. Those are company-reported totals across creators, not the take-home pay of a typical developer or a measure of how much teen creators earned. Roblox’s 2025 Form 10-K also says more than 23,500 creators received fiat payouts through DevEx during 2025; more than 35,500 were qualified and registered at year-end.
The distribution matters more than the headline pool. Roblox’s Creator Hub reports a $1,550 median payout among DevEx creators for the 12 months ended December 31, 2025, and an average of $1.3 million for the top 1,000 creators in 2025. The first is a median for people in DevEx, not all Roblox creators; the second is an average for a small top-earning group. Neither is a forecast for someone starting out. Roblox’s monetization documentation does not establish a comparable median for all people who create on the platform.
These numbers also come from Roblox, not an independent estimate of teen developers’ earnings. No comparable current estimate establishes how many teen creators earn millions. A payout headline should therefore be read as evidence that very large outcomes exist, not that they are typical or predictable.

How do Roblox developers make money?
Creators can earn through several types of activity, and not every route applies to every creator. Roblox lists income from experiences and in-game enhancements, avatar items, Creator Rewards, ads and portals, intellectual-property licensing, and creator tools such as plugins. Its Creator Hub summarizes different creator shares for different transactions:
| Transaction described by Roblox | Creator share in Roblox’s summary |
|---|---|
| Items sold in a creator’s game for Robux | Generally 70% |
| Items sold in the Marketplace | 30% |
| Some items sold for real money, such as plugins or paid access | Up to 90% |
These are Roblox’s published summary figures, not one universal developer cut. The transaction type and applicable terms matter; Roblox’s SEC filing describes the platform’s share and creators’ share as varying by transaction. Check the current terms for the specific product before projecting revenue from a sale.

There is an important distinction between earning Robux and receiving cash. A creator may build up Robux through platform activity, but those earnings do not automatically become spendable money outside Roblox. Cash-out requires meeting DevEx rules and submitting a request.
Can a teenager cash out Robux?
Roblox’s DevEx documentation lists a minimum age of 13 and additional eligibility requirements. Meeting the age requirement alone does not qualify someone to cash out. The listed requirements include:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.

Roblox’s 2025 Form 10-K says the prospective DevEx cash-out rate became $0.0038 per eligible earned Robux on September 5, 2025. Older balances retain their earlier rate until cashed out. That rate applies to eligible earned Robux under DevEx rules; it is not a promise that every Robux balance can be converted at that amount. See the DevEx documentation and the filing’s explanation of the rate for the terms.
For a young creator, cash-out also raises practical questions beyond platform eligibility, including who manages account and tax information. The cited rules establish Roblox’s requirements; they are not individualized legal or tax advice.

Did a teenager make Grow a Garden?
Yes. The Associated Press reported on July 30, 2025, that Grow a Garden was created by a teenager and acquired by Splitting Point Studios. The story is a concrete example of a teen-created Roblox experience becoming a major industry event. It does not establish the creator’s personal earnings or show how often young developers achieve a comparable result. The AP report quoted Splitting Point Studios founder and CEO Janzen Madsen arguing that games built around this kind of player expectation would shape the industry: “Well, I actually think in five years this is what player expectation is gonna be. And because you guys haven’t embraced it, like you’re not gonna know how to make games.”
Another Roblox creator profile illustrates a different kind of work: Roblox’s September 2026 impact report describes Rush Bogin, who joined its user-generated-content program at 13 and later built a business around avatar items. That is an example of creator work extending beyond game design, not evidence of a particular income level. The report’s economic-impact estimates are Roblox-reported estimates; modeled GDP or jobs supported should not be mistaken for wages paid directly to developers. Roblox’s impact report provides the company’s account.

What does Roblox’s creator economy mean for the gaming industry?
Roblox combines creation tools, distribution, audience access, and platform services in one ecosystem. That can lower some barriers to getting an experience in front of players, while making creators dependent on Roblox’s discovery systems, monetization rules, currency conversion, and account eligibility. A large payout pool shows the scale of money moving through this ecosystem; it does not by itself reveal how that money is divided or how profitable a particular project is.
Grow a Garden shows how a Roblox experience can attract substantial attention and a studio acquisition. It is a signal that work originating on the platform can matter to the wider game industry, but one hit cannot establish a general trend in teen earnings or a typical route to a deal. Roblox’s reported creator totals and its creator profiles offer context, while the available figures do not independently measure the prevalence of success among young developers.
What should young creators know about peer communities?
A CHI 2025 study by Yubin Choi, Jeanne Choi, and Joseph Seering interviewed 18 teen Roblox developers about peer communities. Participants described technical, social, and career benefits, as well as conflict, weak community structure, and exposure to financial scams. Because it was a qualitative study of 18 people, it does not measure how common those experiences are across all teen developers. The study is useful as a description of potential benefits and risks, not a prevalence estimate.
- Use peer groups to learn and collaborate, but distinguish advice from official platform requirements.
- Be cautious of anyone promising guaranteed earnings or asking for account access or money in exchange for a payout opportunity.
- Before planning around income, confirm the current DevEx rules and the terms for the specific way you expect to earn.
The practical takeaway is to treat a Roblox project first as a creative and business experiment, not a reliable paycheck. Large outcomes are possible, but platform-wide totals, top-earner averages, and a celebrated teen-created hit do not establish what an individual young developer is likely to earn.
