Physics can help predict where a roulette ball is likely to land, but the available experiment does not show a dependable way to make money at a casino. In a 2012 study, Michael Small and Chi Kong Tse reported improved predictions in specific setups—and cautioned that “the margin for profit is quite slim.”
What does it mean to “beat” roulette?
Roulette is a mechanical system: the ball travels around a spinning wheel, slows, meets deflectors, and eventually falls into a pocket. Because its motion can be observed, researchers can model the ball’s position, velocity, and acceleration to estimate where it may reach the deflectors. That is a prediction about a physical process, not a guarantee of the final pocket. Bounces after the deflectors add uncertainty.
Small and Tse’s 2012 paper, “Predicting the outcome of roulette”, examines two distinct possible edges: finding a wheel that persistently favors certain outcomes, and predicting motion while bets are still open. The paper’s results concern experiments, not a validated consumer method for casino play.
What did the 2012 experiments find?
Manual timing demonstration
In the paper’s manual timing demonstration, the researchers predicted the correct half of the wheel in 13 of 22 trials. They calculated an expected return of +18% for that particular sample and reported three correct predictions of a precise location. The +18% is the authors’ calculation from a small experimental sample; it is not a general expected profit for roulette players.

Camera-based experiment
In a separate experiment, a camera-based apparatus was used to examine 700 spins on a level, casino-grade European wheel. The researchers used observations of ball and wheel motion to make predictions. These results describe that apparatus and those experimental conditions; they do not establish that the same accuracy or return can be achieved at a casino.
How does a physical prediction differ from a biased wheel?

These approaches require different evidence. A wheel-bias claim concerns a stable statistical pattern across many outcomes; a motion-prediction claim concerns the changing physical state of a particular spin. Neither should be inferred simply from a short run of wins.

Why does roulette still have a house edge?
On a fair European wheel with 37 pockets and a single-number payout of 35 to 1, Small and Tse calculate an expected return of about −2.7% for that bet. The payout is smaller than would be needed to offset the chance of losing, so a player loses value on average under those assumptions. This calculation is for the stated European-wheel setup; it should not be applied to American roulette, which has a different pocket count.
A prediction could in principle change the odds if it were accurate enough and usable before bets close. But the paper does not establish a practical, repeatable edge that overcomes the house advantage in ordinary casino conditions. Its own conclusion is that the potential profit margin is slim.

What did Edward Thorp and Claude Shannon do?
The study’s subject is often associated with Edward Thorp and Claude Shannon, but the evidence summarized here does not verify a direct quotation from either man or establish a specific roulette method they successfully used in casinos. Thorp’s official site describes The Mathematics of Gambling as covering roulette and “Using the laws of physics to predict the next winning number.” That makes the book relevant background, but the description is not evidence of a dependable modern betting system or of current availability.

Changing bet sizes or following a sequence does not change the wheel’s physical probabilities. A system based on doubling after losses, switching numbers, or tracking streaks cannot remove the house edge on a fair wheel. A physics-based forecast is a different idea because it attempts to gain information about the current spin, but the cited experiments do not show that ordinary players can turn such a forecast into reliable casino winnings.
