A retailer generally does not have to trade its gift card for a different brand’s card. Start by asking the card’s issuer; if it will not help, a secondary-market service may offer cash or another available card, often for less than the balance and subject to its terms.
What kind of exchange do you mean?
Swapping an existing card for a different issuer’s card is not the same as using a card to buy another gift card, redeeming it for goods or services, or receiving store credit after returning merchandise. Those transactions can have different rules and restrictions. Do not assume a store’s merchandise-return policy applies to an unused gift-card balance.
In the United States, federal law does not create a general right to exchange one retailer’s card for another brand’s card. Federal gift-card rules mainly address card definitions, expiration dates, and fees. Whether an issuer will make an exception depends on its terms and any applicable state or other local law. See the CFPB’s Regulation E gift-card rule and official interpretation and 15 U.S.C. § 1693l-1.
Ask the issuer before using a resale service
Check the terms printed on the card or on the issuer’s official website, then contact the issuer using its official support channel. Ask specifically whether it will refund, replace, or exchange the remaining balance and whether any restrictions apply. An issuer may decline, but contacting it first avoids transferring a card to a third party before you know whether a direct option exists.

Identify the card type
A retail or store gift card is generally redeemable at the issuing merchant or an affiliated group. A general-use prepaid card carries a payment-network brand and may be accepted at multiple unaffiliated merchants that accept that network. These categories describe how cards are defined and used; they do not establish that an issuer must convert a card into another company’s product. The FTC’s gift-card guidance explains the consumer-facing distinction, while the CFPB rule sets out the regulatory definitions.
If the issuer says no, compare your alternatives
Keep and use the card
If you can use it for something you need, redemption may preserve more of its value than a secondary-market trade. Check the merchant’s acceptance rules, remaining balance, and any applicable expiration or fee terms.

Consider a secondary-market exchange
Some resale services accept eligible cards and make an offer based on the brand and market pricing. For example, CardCash says customers can trade a sold card for a different gift card available through its service. Its terms and offers are provider statements, not an independent guarantee of value or service quality. An offer may be below the card’s remaining balance, and availability can change. Review the live offer and terms before accepting.
Compare these details before transferring a card:
- Value: Compare the offer with the verified remaining balance; do not assume you will receive face value.
- Eligibility: Confirm that the brand, balance, and card format are accepted under the current offer.
- Transfer and delivery: Check how the card must be transferred and when the replacement card or payment is issued.
- Cancellation: Find out when an offer becomes binding and whether you can cancel after confirming it.
- Balance problems: Read the provider’s current policy for discrepancies, refunds, and buyer protections; protections may be conditional.

Check the rules that apply to your location
United States
Federal law generally prohibits expiration dates for covered gift certificates, store gift cards, and general-use prepaid cards, subject to an exception: an expiration date may be allowed when it is at least five years after issuance or the latest load and the terms are clearly and conspicuously stated. This is an expiration rule, not a right to exchange cards. State laws may provide additional protections. The federal framework is in 15 U.S.C. § 1693l-1.
Canada
Canadian guidance discusses store credit issued as a gift card when a customer returns or exchanges merchandise. That concerns a merchandise transaction, not a general right to convert an existing gift card into another issuer’s card. See the Office of Consumer Affairs’ gift-card guidance.

Australia
The ACCC says recipients can exchange a gift card for goods or services up to its value. That describes redemption in the Australian consumer context; it does not establish a universal right to exchange one brand’s gift card for another. See the ACCC’s gift-card guidance.
Special caution for Amazon gift cards
Amazon’s published prohibited-use policy says selling or exchanging an Amazon gift card for cash or another prepaid payment instrument is prohibited, and that prohibited activity may lead to action affecting redemption or balances. Do not treat a third-party exchange service as a workaround to this restriction. Check Amazon’s prohibited-use policy before acting.
