Yes—changing a card’s security code can make a stolen, old code less useful for unauthorized online purchases. It is a targeted safeguard for card-not-present transactions, not a way to prevent every kind of credit card fraud. Whether you can use it depends on your card issuer and product.
What a dynamic CVV does
A CVV2 or CVC2 is the security code used to help verify card-not-present transactions, such as online purchases. A dynamic CVV works like a standard code at checkout, but the valid value changes over time or under another issuer-defined rule. If a merchant or fraudster later has an expired code, that code is intended to be less useful for another purchase.
In Visa’s described workflow, an issuer requests dynamic codes, makes a current valid code available to the cardholder—such as in its mobile banking app—and validates the code when a transaction is authorized. Visa’s issuer API supports requests for one to 24 codes. Visa describes the service as globally available to issuer banks; that does not mean every bank or cardholder can use it. Visa’s dCVV2 documentation explains the issuer-facing process.
How often does the code change?
“Dynamic” does not mean that every card refreshes its code every few minutes. The timing and trigger depend on the card’s implementation and issuer policy.

- Digital card: Westpac said its digital-card CVC changed every 24 hours. Its June 2022 announcement describes the bank’s product, not a universal schedule. Westpac’s announcement
- Time-based physical card: A 2020 Secure Technology Alliance white paper describes cards with an internal battery and real-time clock; it says intervals can range from 15 minutes to 24 hours, depending on issuer policy. The card and verification service must remain synchronized.
- EMV-integrated physical card: The same white paper describes a code that can update after a card-present EMV transaction, with the terminal providing power. What the available fraud figure does—and does not—show
Westpac reported in 2022 that fraud incidence for the average customer using its digital card with a dynamic CVC was 80 percent lower. The bank said it introduced the feature in early 2020. This is a bank-reported result; the announcement does not describe a research design sufficient to establish that the changing code alone caused the reduction. It should not be treated as an expected result for customers at other banks, or as a measure of protection against every fraud type.
Westpac’s release also quoted Chief Digital Officer Jason Hair calling the feature “a game changer” and saying the bank had seen a significant fraud reduction. That is the bank’s promotional characterization of its own reported outcome, not an independent assessment.

What changing a CVV cannot do
The mechanism is aimed at misuse of card credentials in card-not-present transactions. A changing code does not establish that all fraud is prevented, or that a compromised card number and other account details will be unusable in every circumstance. Issuer fraud controls remain important.
EMV 3-D Secure is a separate, complementary control. It allows merchants and issuers to exchange transaction, payment-method and device information so the issuer can assess a transaction and authenticate the consumer. Unlike a dynamic CVV, it is a protocol between participating merchants and issuers rather than a changing code on a card. The shopper may be asked to complete an additional authentication step, depending on the transaction. EMVCo’s 3-D Secure overview

How to check whether your card has one
- Open your issuer’s banking app and look at the card or digital-card details for a changing security code or dynamic CVC.
- If the app does not show one, ask the issuer whether your specific card supports a dynamic code or a digital card with a changing CVC.
- Follow the issuer’s instructions for using the current code at checkout; the feature is issuer-provided, and availability varies by bank and card product.
Visa’s documentation describes a service for issuer banks, while the CFPB’s 2019 credit card market report noted historical issuer experimentation with dynamic CVVs. Neither establishes current availability for a particular consumer card. CFPB, 2019 Consumer Credit Card Market Report
