Can a Hardware Wallet Be Hacked If You Never Share Your Recovery Phrase?

Yes. Keeping your recovery phrase private blocks a major route to theft, but it does not make a hardware wallet impossible to compromise. An attacker may target a device they can physically access, trick you into approving a transfer, interfere with setup or updates, or use phishing and coercion. The risk depends on the wallet model, firmware, the attacker’s access and your security habits.

What your recovery phrase protects—and what it doesn’t

Your recovery phrase is a master backup credential: anyone who obtains it can restore the wallet elsewhere and control its funds. Keep it offline. Do not photograph it, store it in cloud storage, or type it into a website, computer or phone. Ledger’s security guidance also warns against sharing it with anyone.

But a private phrase does not prevent every kind of theft. Someone might attack the physical device, compromise the transaction you are asked to sign, or deceive you into revealing the phrase. Protecting the phrase is essential, but it is only one part of protecting a wallet.

How a wallet can be attacked without phrase-sharing

Physical access to the device

A stolen or unattended device may be targeted directly. In a January 2019 disclosure, Ledger Donjon described a physical seed-extraction attack against Trezor One, Trezor T, KeepKey and clones. The disclosure involved access to the device and specialized equipment. It is a historical, device-specific account—not proof that every current hardware wallet is vulnerable.

Protections vary by model. Trezor’s security overview says Safe 3 and Safe 5 verify the PIN inside a Secure Element, while Model T and Model One do not have hardware-enforced rate limiting. It also describes a Model One recovery procedure in which backup words are entered on a computer in randomized order. These differences show why a claim about one device or recovery flow should not be applied to all wallets.

Ledger describes power glitching and other physical attack techniques, and explains countermeasures it uses in its own Secure Element. Those are vendor claims about its products, not independent certification that every model is immune to physical attacks. A Secure Element is a defense, not a guarantee that a wallet cannot be hacked.

Malware that manipulates a transaction

A hardware wallet can protect private keys while still relying on a connected computer to prepare transaction data. A 2021 academic study describes EthClipper, clipboard malware designed to evade address checks, and reports testing it with Trezor, Ledger and KeepKey wallets. The study does not establish how often this happens. Its practical lesson is to check the recipient address and transaction details on the wallet’s own screen, then reject anything unexpected.

Phishing, compromised setup and human error

A fake website, app or support form may ask you to enter your recovery phrase. That is a separate route to compromise: the attacker gets the credential from you rather than extracting it from the device. Follow the wallet maker’s official setup process, reject a device that arrives already configured, and never enter your phrase on a computer or smartphone. Self-custody does not eliminate social engineering, physical threats or mistakes.

Passphrases add a secret—and a responsibility

Some wallets let you use a passphrase to derive a different wallet from the same recovery phrase. Trezor’s firmware documentation describes host-supplied passphrase entry as well as on-device entry; its Safe 5 FAQ says a passphrase-protected wallet requires the passphrase in addition to the backup.

A passphrase may protect a wallet if the recovery phrase is exposed, but it becomes another secret to remember and enter securely. Forgetting it can leave you unable to access the wallet you created with it. The exact entry and recovery flow depends on the device, so check the instructions for your model rather than assuming all wallets behave alike. A weak, memorable phrase is not automatically good protection.

Steps to reduce the risk

  1. Set up the wallet yourself. Use the manufacturer’s official process and do not use a device that arrives preconfigured.
  2. Keep the recovery phrase offline and physically protected. Do not photograph it, copy it to cloud storage, or type it into a phone, computer or website.
  3. Use official software and firmware channels. Follow the instructions for your exact model. Trezor says its firmware is signed to help verify authenticity.
  4. Secure the device and use its PIN. PIN protections differ between models, so check what your device actually enforces.
  5. Verify before signing. Check the recipient address and transaction details on the wallet screen, not just on the connected computer.
  6. Act quickly if the phrase may have been exposed. Treat the wallet as compromised and move the assets to a newly generated wallet using a clean, trusted setup. Anyone holding the phrase may restore the wallet elsewhere.

A metal backup can help protect a written phrase from some forms of physical damage. It does not prevent theft by someone who can read the phrase, malware, or an attack on the device.

How to assess a wallet’s security

There is no evidence here that establishes a population-level probability of a hardware wallet being hacked. A reported attack or laboratory demonstration is not an incidence rate, and no wallet should be described as impossible to compromise. For a specific device, check the current manufacturer documentation for:

Model generations and firmware can differ, so do not assume a security feature or weakness applies across a manufacturer’s entire product line.
