Re:

Can a Bitcoin Transaction Be Redirected Without Private Keys?

A signed Bitcoin payment’s recipient cannot ordinarily be changed without valid authorization. A changed txid, an RBF replacement, and an address substituted before signing are different risks.

Usually, no: someone without the required spending authorization cannot simply change the recipient of an ordinary Bitcoin transaction after it has been signed. But a changed transaction ID, a replacement of an unconfirmed transaction, or an address tricked into a payment request can look like “redirection” while describing different events.

What does “redirected” mean?

A Bitcoin transaction spends one or more inputs and specifies the outputs that receive the value, subject to the applicable script conditions. The signatures authorize that spend. For an ordinary wallet payment, changing the outputs after signing would require valid authorization for the changed transaction; a stranger cannot just edit the recipient in flight and keep the original authorization valid.

Four situations are worth separating: an address substituted before you sign, an eligible unconfirmed transaction replaced under relay policy, a transaction ID changed without changing its outputs, and an already-confirmed transaction. Only the first involves the payer authorizing the wrong destination; the others do not amount to a stranger editing an ordinary signed payment’s recipient.

Can someone change the recipient after you sign?

Not by simply altering the signed transaction. Its inputs and outputs are part of the transaction being authorized. A version with a different destination is a different transaction, and it needs valid authorization under the relevant spending conditions. Without that authorization, changing the output invalidates the spend.

Bitkey Bitcoin Hardware Wallet, No Screen - Self-Custody, No Seed Phrase
  • BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
  • SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
  • NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
  • 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
  • BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.

This describes an ordinary Bitcoin wallet transaction, not every possible script or specialized signature proposal. It also does not mean every wallet display or payment workflow is safe: a person can be tricked into signing a transaction whose recipient was already changed before authorization.

Can the transaction ID change while the payment stays the same?

Yes. Transaction malleability refers to certain changes to a transaction’s representation that can alter its transaction ID (txid) without changing its economic inputs or outputs. A different txid alone does not show that the coins went to a different recipient.

BIP 62, a closed proposal by Pieter Wuille dated 2014-03-12, describes how a valid transaction could be modified in flight without access to the relevant private keys. Its text is not a complete or implemented specification of all current transaction rules, so it is best treated as a description of the malleability problem, not a full guide to present-day behavior. BIP 147, listed as deployed, describes a specific malleability vector and notes txid consequences for non-segregated-witness transactions.

A changed txid can still matter to wallet or application tracking. For example, an unconfirmed child transaction that refers to a parent’s txid may be affected if that identifier changes. That tracking complication is not itself evidence that the parent’s outputs changed.

Can Replace-by-Fee redirect an unconfirmed payment?

Replace-by-Fee (RBF) concerns competing versions of a transaction that has not yet been confirmed; it is not a mechanism for a stranger to edit the recipient in a signed payment. BIP 125, an opt-in replacement proposal assigned on 2015-12-04 and listed as deployed, describes signaling for replacement and the risk recipients face when they treat an unconfirmed payment as final.

A replacement with different outputs still needs valid authorization for those outputs. Whether nodes accept or relay a replacement depends on their policies, which can differ and change. A recipient should therefore treat an unconfirmed payment as provisional rather than assume that the first version seen is final. Waiting for confirmation is the safeguard BIP 125 describes for recipients.

Can an attacker substitute an address before authorization?

Yes. If a compromised device, website, clipboard, or payment request presents the attacker’s address and the payer signs that transaction, the payer has authorized the wrong destination. This is not post-signing redirection; it is address substitution before authorization.

BIP 70, a historical payment-protocol proposal, identifies man-in-the-middle replacement of a merchant’s Bitcoin address before a hardware-wallet authorization as a threat its design aimed to resist. That establishes the threat, not that the protocol is widely adopted today or that a hardware wallet guarantees safety. Before approving a payment, verify the recipient shown for the transaction against the intended address using a trusted source; a signing device cannot reverse a transaction after broadcast.

What changes after confirmation?

Once confirmed, the transaction is recorded in the blockchain with its authorized outputs. The ordinary authorization model does not let a stranger rewrite those outputs. Confirmation is not an absolute guarantee against every broader chain reorganization; the sources cited here do not establish a universal confirmation depth for every situation.

What about specialized signature proposals?

BIP 118 describes a proposed signature mode called ANYPREVOUT for Taproot scripts. In specialized circumstances, it can allow an alternate input and a valid transaction with a different txid; depending on the changes, the result may conflict with an original transaction or produce a double payment to the same recipient. This is not the behavior of an ordinary wallet spend and is not arbitrary redirection to a new recipient.

For the usual payment question, keep the distinctions clear: a txid change does not prove an output changed, an RBF replacement is not a stranger editing signed outputs, and a wrong address approved before signing means the payer authorized that destination.
