The “hidden energy treasure” in California’s Mojave Desert is not natural hydrogen found underground. It is a proposed solar-powered hydrogen facility at Cadiz Ranch, announced by Cadiz and RIC Energy in October 2024. The project has not been reported as operating or producing hydrogen in the cited disclosures.
What is planned for Cadiz Ranch?
The proposal is for a renewable hydrogen plant at Cadiz Ranch in eastern San Bernardino County, in the Mojave Desert. Cadiz and RIC Energy announced their agreement on October 23, 2024. Cadiz’s SEC-filed announcement described a development area of up to 3,062 acres and said RIC would handle permitting, construction and operation.

The California Air Resources Board also describes it as a proposed renewable hydrogen plant, not a discovered underground energy deposit.
How would the project make hydrogen?
The companies described an off-grid facility using photovoltaic solar electricity and Cadiz water resources. In general, “green hydrogen” refers to hydrogen made by using renewable electricity to power electrolysis. The project materials support that as the intended production route, but do not establish a specific electrolyzer design, water-treatment arrangement or independently verified lifecycle emissions result.

What does the 50-ton figure mean?
The announced capacity is up to 50 tons of hydrogen per day once the facility is constructed and operational. It is a developer-stated maximum design target, not an amount the project has produced. Cadiz’s later annual filing described development on up to 3,000 acres, a rounded figure that differs from the 2024 filing’s up-to-3,062-acre description.
What is the project’s current status?
Development and permitting
Cadiz’s 2025 annual filing said RIC was pursuing development and expected to begin state and local environmental permitting during 2026. That is an expectation to begin the process, not evidence that permits have been completed.

Solar and hydrogen transport planning
On July 22, 2026, Cadiz and RIC announced a memorandum of understanding covering expanded collaboration on on-site solar planning and feasibility work for hydrogen transportation infrastructure. This indicates further planning; it does not establish that solar facilities or transport infrastructure have been built.

- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
