Revenue is the money a company reports from its business during a period, before subtracting expenses. The headline compares company-wide revenue, not a like-for-like tally of vehicle sales.

Tesla’s reported business mix
Tesla’s Q3 total comprised US$20.016 billion in automotive revenue, US$2.376 billion in energy generation and storage revenue, and US$2.790 billion in services and other revenue, according to its financial summary. Its automotive category is not the same as a count of vehicles delivered.
BYD’s broader operations
BYD’s business includes automobiles and related products as well as other business lines. The rounded quarterly figure reported by France 24 is a company revenue figure; it does not establish revenue from battery-electric vehicles alone. It also does not isolate plug-in hybrids. Therefore, the reported total should not be described as BYD’s EV-only revenue.

What the milestone does—and does not—show
- It establishes a quarterly revenue comparison. BYD’s reported Q3 2024 total exceeded Tesla’s total for that quarter.
- It does not establish higher profit. Revenue is not what remains after operating costs, taxes, and other expenses. Tesla reports profit measures separately from revenue in its financial summary.
- It does not establish vehicle-unit leadership. Revenue totals cannot tell you which company delivered more vehicles; unit counts and revenue are different measures.
- It does not establish a recurring lead. This milestone concerns one quarter, not every quarter or every financial measure.
How Tesla’s Q3 revenue changed
Tesla reported that automotive sales revenue rose 1% year over year in Q3 2024. The company said delivery increases were partly offset by lower average selling prices. Tesla also reported that energy generation and storage revenue grew 52% year over year, attributing the increase primarily to Megapack and Powerwall deployments. These are explanations reported by Tesla, not independent assessments of the causes.

The quarterly milestone came before a separate full-year comparison. The Associated Press reported in 2025 that BYD’s 2024 annual revenue was RMB 777.1 billion (about US$107 billion), while Tesla’s was nearly US$97.7 billion. Those annual figures provide later context; they do not change what the Q3 comparison measures.
