Yes: BYD reported more passenger battery-electric vehicle (BEV) sales than Tesla delivered vehicles in the third quarter of 2026. BYD’s 762,478 passenger BEVs exceeded Tesla’s 486,532 deliveries by 275,946 vehicles. But this is a comparison of BYD passenger BEV sales with Tesla’s all-BEV deliveries—not proof that BYD leads Tesla on every measure of business performance.
How large was BYD’s Q3 2026 lead?
According to CnEVPost’s 2026 report, BYD sold 762,478 passenger BEVs in Q3 2026, while Tesla reported 486,532 vehicle deliveries. The difference was 275,946 vehicles.

The figures are close market measures, but not guaranteed to use identical accounting definitions: BYD’s number is passenger BEV sales compiled from company data, while Tesla’s is company-reported global deliveries. The comparison does not include BYD plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) or commercial vehicles.
Did BYD outsell Tesla for all of 2026?
Not on the nine-month figures reported so far. For the first nine months of 2026, BYD recorded 1,629,957 passenger BEV sales and Tesla recorded 1,324,681 deliveries. BYD therefore had higher cumulative volume, while Tesla’s year-over-year growth rate was higher across that period, according to CnEVPost’s 2026 reporting.

That distinction matters: a company can sell more vehicles in a period yet grow more slowly over a longer comparison window. Quarterly totals, year-over-year changes and year-to-date totals answer different questions.
Why BYD’s broader sales totals tell a different story
BYD makes both BEVs and PHEVs, and reports a broader category called new energy vehicles (NEVs). NEV totals should not be treated as BEV totals. For September 2026, BYD reported 463,561 NEVs, including 273,143 passenger BEVs. Its total NEV sales for the first nine months were 3,131,576, down 3.94% year over year, as reported by CnEVPost.

Those figures do not contradict BYD’s Q3 passenger-BEV lead over Tesla. They count different vehicle categories and, in the nine-month NEV figure, a different scope. A PHEV-market lead is not the same thing as a BEV lead, either.
What the result says—and what it doesn’t
BYD’s Q3 passenger-BEV volume and growth were stronger than Tesla’s reported delivery figures on the stated comparison. That is a meaningful sales milestone, but unit volume by itself does not establish which company is more profitable, has stronger brand appeal, or performs better overall. The figures also do not show which company led in any particular country or region.

The wider market helps explain why these rankings matter. The International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2026 says global electric-car sales exceeded 20 million in 2025, 20% above 2024, and accounted for 25% of the overall car market. In that analysis, “electric cars” includes both BEVs and PHEVs, so the global total is broader than the BEV comparison above.
China is central to the scale of the market: the IEA reports that more than 13 million electric cars were sold there in 2025, close to 55% of new cars sold in the country and six out of ten electric cars sold globally. Those figures describe the market, not a BYD-versus-Tesla country-level sales comparison.

Another comparison illustrates the importance of category labels. TrendForce’s Q2 2026 assessment says global NEV sales—BEVs, PHEVs and fuel-cell vehicles—reached 5.37 million, up 10.4% year over year, and that BYD regained the lead in global BEV sales for that quarter, with Tesla second. TrendForce also reports BYD led the PHEV market; that separate ranking should not be confused with BEV sales.

- For overall business performance: these sales and delivery figures alone are not enough to declare a winner.
So “BYD is suddenly crushing Tesla” is too broad without a measure and timeframe. The precise claim supported by the latest reported quarter is that BYD sold substantially more passenger BEVs than Tesla delivered vehicles in Q3 2026.
