BYD reported 321,123 new energy vehicle (NEV) sales in April 2026. That was 6.96% higher than March, but 15.51% lower than April 2025; sales for January through April were down 26.02% year over year. April therefore marked a month-to-month recovery, not evidence of sustained annual growth or a confirmed company forecast.
How many vehicles did BYD sell in April 2026?
BYD Company Limited reported 321,123 NEV sales for April 2026 in a Hong Kong Exchange filing dated May 3. The filing’s comparison totals show 380,089 sales in April 2025, making the April 2026 total 15.51% lower year over year. Why April’s sales can rise and still be down
The direction depends on the comparison period. CnEVPost reported that April sales were 6.96% higher than March, while the year-over-year comparison was a 15.51% decline. January–April sales remained below the prior year
BYD reported 1,021,586 NEV sales from January through April 2026, compared with 1,380,893 in the same period of 2025. That is a 26.02% year-over-year decline, so April’s improvement over March had not reversed the cumulative annual shortfall.

What BYD sold: electric, plug-in hybrid and commercial vehicles
Of April’s reported total, 314,100 were passenger NEVs. The company’s reported breakdown was:

These categories and figures come from BYD’s unaudited filing. The filing also reported 20.977 GWh of installed capacity for NEV power and energy-storage batteries in April; that is a battery-capacity figure, not a vehicle-sales total.

Exports and overseas sales use different measures
BYD’s filing reported 135,098 NEV exports in April. Separately, CnEVPost reported 134,542 overseas passenger vehicles and pickups, up 70.9% year over year. These are different scopes and should not be added together or treated as interchangeable. BYD’s official Chinese-language post said overseas sales exceeded 130,000 and described them as a record, but that characterization does not change the distinct definitions of the filing’s export count and the secondary report’s overseas vehicle figure. Not by itself. The reported data establish a rise from March, but a decline from April 2025 and a larger decline in year-to-date sales. The reviewed filing reports past production and sales; it does not provide a forward sales forecast. April’s results therefore cannot substantiate a claim that BYD expects sales to keep increasing. A forecast should be attributed to a named source and should specify whether it concerns month-to-month sales, annual sales, exports or another measure.
